Alfy Hill's Facebook page, FWIW, says he may be headed to East Carolina after Clearinghouse snafu at Alabama.
Hmm, interesting. It makes sense in terms of location because ECU is very near his hometown, but I don't know how / why the NCAA would sign off on him there and not at 'Bama. Then again, leaving it at that would require one to assume that the NCAA always acts rationally and with consistency of action, always a dangerous assumption.
In any event, though, if this is true, it's likely the worst-case scenario for Alabama. Enrolling at ECU would immediately start his eligibility clock, and It's hard to see how he makes it back to Tuscaloosa by immediately enrolling at another Division 1-A school.
Regardless, I just hope it works out well for him, that kid was ridiculously screwed over the NCAA. Of course I'd like to see him make his way back to Alabama, but if that's not feasible then best of luck to him wherever he ends up. He can definitely play, and he's going to be a big asset to someone.

I was very excited about Alfy. Hell, he was so big he made Courtney Upshaw look small when he was standing next to him. Hopefully he is able to make it back in the future.

I am still perplexed
Isn’t there anything the University can do to prevent this kind of situation occuring again? Expecially in somehow reigning in the all-powerful and omnipotent NCAA? Is there absolutely no recourse available to either Mr Hill or the University? It’s just not right to uselessly lose the caliber player of Mr Hill after so much effort has been expended by all concerned to get him to Alabama. This cannot be considered acceptable. Tyrants, tyrants everywhere.

I'm going to assume no...
Because these kinds of cases have happened before at other schools.
Others can correct me, but when I went through the process, it almost seemed like that if you (the athlete) and/or your counselor/coach/etc. can fill out the checklist that lists the requirements of getting through the Clearinghouse, then you “cleared”. But, it never becomes official unless you got some confirmation in the mail.
Basically, the Clearinghouse could give you the OK, without having done the review of the coursework. Like others have said before since this issue came out, I’d rather the NCAA tell Hill, “You’re not cleared because of these two classes”, at the beginning of the summer and let him do the work needed to get it cleared.
This just sounds all too fishy. The only thing I can think of for ECU is that maybe ECU accepts non-qualifiers?

Well
In that case, the system bites. Maybe they (NCAA) should issue something along the line of a ‘conditional’ clearance so that everyone involved is at least aware that there may be an issue that has not yet quite been totally resolved. To take these kind of actions after so much effort has been spent by all concerned, pardon my redneckness, is chicken shit. . Thank you for shedding some light on such a muddled process.

Glad I can help...
But also realize that was just my experience. Unfortunately, no one can truly give the scoop on the actual process, i.e. when the papers arrive at the Clearinghouse, what happens?

Apparently he IS going to ECU,
and apparently they DO accept non-qualifiers. I’ve never really heard of this before, or at least I wasn’t aware of what it was. I take it Bama does not do this? Is that an SEC rule, or University? Is this how Mike Ford ended up at USF?

I know that...
It’s been known that if you’re part of a BCS conference, the chances of accepting non-qualifiers are zilch or extremely extremely rare. I believe that the SEC does have a rule stating that the member schools cannot accept non-qualifiers. I want to say some Big East schools still do. If you’re part of a non-BCS conference, then accepting non-qualifiers is how you continue to be competitive.

i'm a little confused...
is this how this works? why was the NCAA still looking at Hill’s academic status if he was already cleared months ago? for goodness sakes, why in the hell would they wait that long to tell him this? sure this sucks for us, but Hill just got dicked in the worse kind of way.
He is venting his frustration
If he is not eligible at Bama hes not eligible at ECU. I feel terrible for this kid and can’t imagine how he feels after getting jerked around like this by the “we are educators” crowd. Meanwhile, this poor young man who probably has nothing more than the bag of clothes he came with has to pack up and leave in humilating fashion despite the fact that he did everything those jackasses told him he needed to do in order to get through the clearinghouse. The only words anyone can offer to the young man is to not let this beat you….your talent is undeniable and we still want you at Bama….take the necessary steps and come on back….if not….good luck wherever you end up….this story just makes me sick.

You know what makes me sick?
Auburn, LSU, Arkansas, MSU, Ol’ Miss, the entire SEC East, and the legion of minions following each.
And the NCAA’s handling of Alfy. Bunch of player hater’s hating on a brotha for having too much game.

It still seems
real suspect to me. I have no idea if ECU accepts non-qualifiers.
And, I hate to lose this kid especially since he is from NC. It cannot help our chances of recruiting from there in near future.
Furthermore he may have had the most upside of any freshman. I feel like we just lost the next Hightower.
And I don’t trust the NCAA one bit.
As much as I hate Auburn I hate Tenn. that much more.
Aside from us
not being piss-poor at LB for at least a little while, this really pisses me off as well. I feel for the kid, because he certainly has the skill-set and build to be the next monster looming across the ball…sad and unfortunate.

I was extremely upset when I saw he did not qualify, BUT
I threw up in my mouth when I read how and why. I can not even begin to explain my hatred for the NCAA pricks that dick these kids over on a regular basis. It is beyond comprehension that they are allowed to destroy a bright, talented young man’s life who worked hard to do everything he was asked and more to qualify. These backstabbing cowards told Alfy what he needed to do and then with unquestioned power, went back and stripped him of what he has earned for absolutely NO justified reason. When is it going to end? How many kids/universities are the unaccountable NCAA ghosts going to screw over before their dishonest, cowardly, biased, power-grabbing organization is disbanded and a fair, honest and consistent organization finally leads college athletics in the right direction and does what is right for these kids.
