South Carolina TE Weslye Saunders Will Miss Season Opener

Per Chris Low of ESPN.com:

South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier said Tuesday that suspended senior tight end Weslye Saunders would not play in the Gamecocks' opener Thursday night against Southern Miss.

"He's not on the team. He won't play Thursday," Spurrier said.

I don't know exactly what to make of this, because South Carolina has more people involved in the NCAA investigation than just Saunders, and there is no word on their status. Furthermore, Spurrier seems to indicate later that Saunders missing this game is about him violating team rules, and not necessarily because of the NCAA deal. Who knows?

Hopefully we'll hear something soon out of the NCAA one way or the other on the Agentgate deal. I wouldn't be surprised the least -- kind of expecting it, actually -- if Dareus misses the San Jose State game, but I'm hoping we at least get definitive word by the end of this week so we can have a normal preparation week for Penn State (Dareus or no).

OBC said yesterday...

that all the guys involved in Hotelgate would play since he has heard nothing from the NCAA concerning their status. Kinda seems like a risk, but oh well

Agreed, but...

Agreed, but I’ve long since said this will be Spurrier’s last year, and I fully expect he’ll bow out come this offseason. So, with that in mind, what does he care? Might as well go all in, and if something comes of it later, well, that’s not his problem.

I'm in the minority...

but I really like OBC and would hate to think that he wouldn’t have that kind of respect for a program, but I think the people of Columbia would be lying to themselves if they said Spurrier ever REALLY felt like a fit for their program.

I am fully in agreement with you about this being his last year. Reason One, Garcia will be gone. Not that he ever liked him, but I doubt he wants to start over with a new QB. Reason Two, Augusta is calling, and coaching really has a negative effect on that handicap.

Saunders is not playing...

…because Nick Saban told him he couldn’t. I heard it from an Ole Miss fan, so it’s true.
