Va Tech

a team who can not beat a top 5 team (they just can’t) let all of college football down last night.

Now the Boise hype machine will push them into the BCSNCG.

I lay this at the feet of Beamer. A good coach who can not win the big game. And do they really have a place at VT reserved for the NC throphy? You got to be kidding me.

By the way, VT could do the rest of college football a favor and go 4-8.

they really did get screwed by the refs on that last drive though. But excuses are excuses. With the exception of Taylor, they played like crap.

Fine with me if they make the championship game

I’ll rest my hopes on Alabama, and i will sleep like a baby doing so.

If it were my team, I’d worry. I have enormous faith in Saban and his men taking care of this in a large way if it falls to them to do so.

by Aardvark on Sep 7, 2010 5:04 PM CDT up reply actions

Maybe it's best for Boise to make the national title game

That way we can trash them and just get it over with

It's hard to say what's been most impressive. The seamless jump from AA? The ability to hit for average? The ability to hit for power? The 18 walks in 111 trips to the plate? The flair for the dramatic? When you're trying to isolate the most impressive aspect of Jason Heyward's game, there's a lot to choose from, and it's only been a month and a half.

My biggest complaint about that it is rests the future of the system on one team. If Boise wins, we’ll be hearing that used as evidence of the system “working” for about the next 25 years.

I'm wrong all the time.

by PeteHoliday on Sep 7, 2010 9:58 AM CDT up reply actions

No, it doesn't

Boise is ranked largely based upon their body of work over the course of several years, this is not considered a “one team they beat” thing. If they were as good as they played last year, and they lost only one player . . .why should they not be highly ranked? Especially after watching so many “better” teams implode?

I am also curious as to whether or not they can make it undefeated this season—lot of football left. They have alwyas whined they were disrespected and played with a chip on their shoulder. That motivation is gone, how do they handle being the cool favorite in every game all year long with all the glowing media? Guys who are not used to that don’t always handle it well.

I am betting they don’t go undefeated and thus, these fears are unfounded. Also, if they stagger—not lose but just look crappy? Against inferior teams, the chances they will drop in rankings is far greater than if say Alabama had a poor but succesful showing against a lower tiered SEC team.

by Aardvark on Sep 7, 2010 5:09 PM CDT up reply actions

Well, then

let’s compare Alabama’s, Texas’, Oklahoma’s, Florida’s, LSU’s, [insert powerhouse team in good conference here] body of work over the past few years. For any given one of these teams, their body of work over the PAST SEASON roughly equates to Boise’s body of work over the past few seasons. Why in the world should that equate to a high ranking? This year’s Boise team did not defeat Oklahoma, so why should they get any credit for that win?

Their starting ranking this year should reflect what the returning starters accomplished last year, which was beat three teams [roughly equivalent to two good SEC teams (TCU and Oregon) and one very mediocre SEC team (Hawaii)] and a slate full of pansies otherwise. Every SEC team plays 2-3 times that schedule EVERY YEAR. Any other major conference plays at least twice that schedule EVERY YEAR. Why in the world do teams like Florida and Texas have to start the season at a disadvantage to Boise based on last year’s wimpy schedule and the work of other Boise teams that this year’s crop of players had absolutely no part in?

Their work is considered too

Just because your body of work is considered that means no one else’s can be?

“Every SEC team . . .”

Yeah, that’s the dogma but last few years, every year? I’ve heard “Well, we weren’t as strong top to bottom as we usually are” so, like, what’s the real point? Is the SEC so dominant that no one can play with them? Then why rate any other team period? Why play anyone else? Why do SEC teams play Jacksonville State? I mean, it’s a waste of time since it’s a foregone conclusion the whole conference is better anyway right?

I like Strength of Schedule, always have, but guess what:

That doesn’t mean you or anyone else is actually a better team. It simply doesn’t. How many SEC teams you seen win or lose out of flyshit luck? A bunch right? So we don’t count those because they don’t reflect the SOS?

Why even play on Saturdays period? Why not drop football altogether and pocket the cash, knowing you’re simply superior?

It don’t work that way son. Gotta play the game and the results count, whether you play Auburn annually or don’t.

Guess what? SEC is top heavy too.

by Aardvark on Sep 7, 2010 8:19 PM CDT up reply actions

You'd have a point

if it was impossible for Boise to equalize strength of schedule. But it’s not – they have several OOC games every year, and they use one of them to knock of a worthy opponent to set the tone for their season, play pansies for the rest of them, and walk into a decent bowl game (perhaps the MNC this year) at the end of the year. That is simply not accomplishing what the other top teams do to get there. I’m sorry – they may be the better team, but IMO the MNC is about what a team has accomplished that year, and not who they might be able to beat if they had a chance. If we’re really going to talk about “why play on Saturday’s period,” they perhaps Boise might try actually playing a few more quality teams on Saturdays.

As for the SEC “not being as dominant,” sure, it hasn’t been. That wasn’t my point. My point was you take any given Boise schedule over the past 10 years, and place it beside the slate that every single SEC team must play, and the SEC’s is at least twice as difficult. You can’t honestly sit there and argue that, can you? And that is not just true for the SEC, it’s true for every other major conference as well (Big 10 possibly excluded). I’m not saying the teams in those conferences go undefeated, or even lose just one game, every year. I’m not saying there’s not a gap between the powers and have-nots of the conference. I’m saying the quality of the competition is so much better it’s mind blowing, and with Boise having the chance to play similar competition and not taking it because they have a strategy with their ticket punched already – well, I just don’t think they deserve a seat at the table.

I’ll say this before it comes up – it is not true that they “can’t” schedule good teams because the good teams don’t want to play them. Boise is looking for home and homes, and they just aren’t going to get those. They need to schedule good teams anyway – and not necessarily the Alabamas or Texas’s of the world – even the Pitts, Northwesterns and Michigan States would do.

Love ya Bob – you’re one of my favorite posters, but I just can’t see the sense in what you’re saying.

boise's wining out for sure

the team is loaded with 3rd year starters across the board. oregon state will get smoked along with the rest of their schedule.

i still dont think this means BSU inherently is title game worthy. but for now, they have re-affirmed their previous distinction of a top 3 teams. Oregon and Bama look to be the other top teams. Iowa and OSU may deserve to be in there as well…

I know

the Virginia Tech O-line didn’t do so well last night but I was disappointed by Ryan Williams. He was dancing around too much and didn’t run with authority like he usually did last season. He tried to do too much and usually lost more yards. If not for Taylor making some plays Virginia Tech gets blown out last night. After so much hype for the Virginia Tech running game they really didn’t do much at all. If they could have ran the ball even just a little at the end of the game they could have put it away and won.

I commented earlier today on the (allegedly) #2 RB tandem in America

I don’t know if you can coach vision, but comparing TR 2009 to TR 2010 makes me think “yes.” He looks like a different player (he looks like a stronger, faster MI). I am really becoming a huge fan of both Pendry and Burns. Our running game is very well coached. Shoot, even Lacy got coached up and came out looking like “Prototypical Stud Alabama Back” that we are now mass-producing.

Several times last night, it seemed the Hokie backs missed holes and ran directly into tackles.

by kipling iffer on Sep 7, 2010 5:36 PM CDT up reply actions

Yes

I think they were ill prepared. They got outplayed and outcoached.

by Aardvark on Sep 7, 2010 5:42 PM CDT up reply actions

When will people realize Frank Beamer is not a great coach. He can win, but he can’t win the big ones.

by 5026 on Sep 7, 2010 8:12 PM CDT up reply actions

That's the way with some teams

They can’t mentally get over the hump. At leats Beamer coaches some of his talent up. I doubt he annually has as much talent as MIles has had, does he?

Well

when he had Vick he the most dominant player in the game and he still couldn’t win a NC.

Let's recall this:

Sure, it’s a simulation of last year’s teams, but I’m easily entertained.

2009 Boise State versus 2009 Alabama: What if Broncos played for national title?

“Final average score: Alabama 31, Boise State 14 (1001 simulated games)

The Crimson Tide won 88 percent of the games played against the Broncos…. The Broncos gave up 350 yards rushing to the Crimson Tide, including 141 yards to Heisman Trophy-winner Mark Ingram and 117 yards to Ingram’s backup Roy Upchurch…"

by Jeff Jones on Sep 7, 2010 9:02 PM CDT reply actions

Gotta play the game

Absent that, it’s conjecture. I tried to get Alabama ot pick up Boise’s open date, they were too packed with ringers already. Shame, Alabama could have put this conversation to rest.
