Preston Gothard's catch
Starting this week, CrimsonReplay.com's coverage of Alabama football history expands to include our weekly SERIES REWIND department, dissecting an important player or play in the series history with that week's opponent.
This week: The catch that made Preston Gothard famous.
If you are old enough to remember the Alabama-Penn State game in 1983, you will probably never forget the sight of Gothard catching the ball in the endzone...and then having his game-tying touchdown ruled incomplete.

I remember it
and it was probably as big a rip off as I have ever seen, his ass literally landed in the endzone , it was an easy call the replay officials would have over turned it for sure
I didn't even need to view the link to remember it.
This bad call sticks in my mind worse than just about any bad call I’ve ever seen go against Bama. It doesn’t help that the official had a family connection to some of the ’79 Penn State players. It was pretty much a prime example of a guy deliberately calling it wrong, or at best, seeing what he wanted to see.
To this day, it is the only thing I’ve ever held against Penn State as a program (though really, it wasn’t their fault that the official did what he did).
