YOUR RBR TOP 25 ALBUMS of ALL TIME

Here it is. My top 25 Albums of all time. This was agonizing because there can only be 25. It took me a week and my 25 was narrowed from over 400 albums in consideration. I’m sure my 25 would change every so often but the bulk of these albums would stay no matter what. You will see a few artists have more than one album and I tried not to have any greatest hits albums.

The rules for your top 25 Albums of all time are simple.

Greatest hits allowed but discouraged

No box sets

No greatest hits of a decade (i.e. 60, 70’s, 80’s and so forth)

Genre greatest hits, tribute and the like are allowed.

Remember this is "YOUR" top 25 albums of all time. If you think Debbie Gibson’s Electric Youth is the best put it on there.  If there are certain albums that everyone has I will compile it for an RBR Top 25 Albums of all time. Let there be free and frank discussion about these albums and rec (if you feel it worthy) so this can be a featured post because I would love to hear from all the RBR guys and gals

So without further ado my top 25 Albums of all time.

Star-divide

1.       Appetite for DestructionGuns N Roses (The soundtrack of my life and the reason I play guitar today)

2.       Thing-FishFrank Zappa (This album is my most listened to album. I am currently on my 342 time listening to this album (since I’ve been keeping track). This album is a musical with a potato headed mammy, a New York princess, a gay kid who impregnates an inflatable doll, and an evil prince.

3.       Joes Garage Frank Zappa (Another musical from frank about music being illegal. All the songs are pure music genius)

4.       Songs in the key of life – Stevie Wonder (IMO, his best work and most instruments on this album are played by Stevie except for one guitar solo by an unnamed guitar player (his name was Frank Zappa))

5.       Unfinished Business – Danny Gatton (Pure guitar mastery and great chillin music, His version of sleepwalk gives me chills every time I hear it)

6.       Black on White – Various souls artists performing classic rock (With Aretha Franklin doing the weight and Eleanor Rigby, Otis Redding doing satisfaction, and Reverend Al Green doing how can you mend a broken heart this album is just mesmerizingly good)

7.       Rig Rock Deluxe – Various Artists doing Truck driving music (there has not been a road trip I have been on that this hasn’t been played. Plus, the ballad of Miss Marie and the Bedford blaze makes me cry.)

8.       Live at the Birchmere (25 years of their best) – Seldom Scene (Bluegrass at its finest this album gives me chills every time I hear it)

9.       Specters – Blue Oyster Cult (Pure awesome from my favorite band. This album is gold from start to finish. Especially the song "golden age of leather and death valley nights")

10.   Agents of Fortune – Blue Oyster Cult (Another rock gem and it has the song "Don’t fear the reaper")

11.   Tyranny and Mutation – Blue Oyster Cult (Pure greatness from start to finish. The stories this album tells reach your soul.)

12.   It’s all about to Change – Travis Tritt (Travis’ best album and made me like country again and become a lifelong Travis Tritt fan)

13.   King of the Electric Blues – Muddy Waters (Sort of a greatest hits but put together by Johnny Winter and focuses on Muddy’s influence on electric blues and rock. Pure blues that will make your big toe shoot up in your boot)

14.   Clutch – Clutch (super mellow riff rock and just awesome)

15.   Blast Tyrant – Clutch (more mature riff rock with incredible lyrics. This album gets my blood boiling)

16.   Farwell from the Royal Albert Hall – Cream (One of the finest concerts ever and Clapton is just kicking it)

17.   Radio – LL Cool J (I was rap when rap wasn’t cool and these were my jams. Pure rhyming excellence)

18.   Tied to the Wheel – Bill Kirchen (his finest album so far with great guitar licks and truck driving goodness oozing out of every cut on that cd)

19.   Apostrophe – Frank Zappa (His guitar tour de force and musical mayhem mastery)

20.   Let Love In – Nick Cave (Mellow and autobiographical to my life. Just a perfect album except for "jangling Jack")

21.   Temple of the Dog – Temple of the Dog (The finest album to come out of Seattle. Pure emotion and killer songs from Chris Cornell and half of Pearl Jam)

22.   Blizzard of Oz – Ozzy Osbourne (Randy Rhoads ripping it up and Ozzy saving metal once again)

23.   Soul to Soul – Stevie Ray Vaughn (IMO, his best album "life without you" still tears open my heart)

24.   How the Gods Kill – Danzig (Gloomy, chill, and rocking. Danzig’s vocals pierce on this album)

25.   One More From the Road – Lynyrd Skynyrd (Classic southern rock at its best with Ronnie killing with his vocals and Allen Collins and Gary Rossington keeping the guitars blazing)

thriller really?

Child of the 80’s it seems great tracks. However, I would have gone for the stooges raw power for Iggy. But awesome albums sir.

I went with Thriller

in the list, because I sort of felt like I had to. I mean, in the end, it definately had a lot of hit songs on it, and prior to MJ becomming a total weirdo, it was one of the first records I ever owned.

Nebraska

to me was always something that resonated. What I identified with it was that it was about normal people trying to cope the harsh reality of the world, and make the best of it. To this day, I think it still means that to me. I didn’t think of including live albums, but if I had, Bruce and the E Street Live from 1975-1984 triple disc set would have made my top 25, no question.

Additionally, the first CDs I ever had, were AC/DC live at Donnington Park, a 2 disc set. It would without question been in top 25.

American Myth is a great album,

and Jackie Greene is one of the most underrated songwriters of our generation, as well as an extremely versatile musician. Even though it’s a compilation, The Dig Years is my favorite of his. Early raw stuff, lyrically amazing.

Dylan and Crowes are classic...

But if you like Chris Whitley this much. I’m going to have to give Chris another shot. Can’t say I know too much of Whitley’s work. What is your favorite album of Whitley’s?

(Disclaimer: This is The GTO Judge’s mobile posts so you are being warned of the following: The Judge can not spell and his grammar ain’t no good. it's really hard to

pick my favorite of Chris. It really depends on mood and what style you’re into. His albums are VERY different from one to the next yet still sound like him. If you like rock and roll, get Terra or Din. If you like blues/acoustic/singer songwriter get Living or Dirt Floor. If you want something to just take in get Rocket House or Perfect Day (a cover album but very good). His last two albums, Reiter In and the duet with Jeff Lang are very good as well. I really do believe he’s the most under appreciated artist in the last 20 years (as far as singer songwriter guitar players go).

As an unrepentant compilations and singles collector, I can only offer a top 10 of proper albums

1. Van Morrison – Astral Weeks
2. Bob Dylan – Blonde on Blonde
3. Elton John – Tumbleweed Connection
4. The Beatles – Abbey Road
5. Leonard Cohen – The Future
6. The Clash – London Calling
7. John Prine – (self-titled)
8. Bob Dylan – Blood on the Tracks
9. Nick Drake – Bryter Layter
10. The Bluegrass Album Band – The Bluegrass Album

I'll be your huckleberry.

1) Bob Dylan – Highway 61 Revisited
2) The Beatles – White Album
3) Beach Boys – Pet Sounds
4) Marvin Gaye – Whats Going On
5) The Clash – London Calling
6) Elvis – The Sun Sessions
7) Nirvana – Nevermind
8) Bruce Springsteen – Born To Run (Thunder Road. Enough said, natch.)
9) Michael Jackson – Thriller (seriously, think of all the hits this album produced)
10) Miles Davis – Kind of Blue
11) Chuck Berry – The Great Twenty-Eight (still remember Dylan saying "if you had to call rock and roll another name, you’d have to call it Chuck Berry)
12) U2 – The Joshua Tree (I hate the band, but this album is as solid as it comes IMO)
13) Johnny Cash – At Folsom Prison
14) The Who – Who’s Next
15) Robert Johnson – King of the Delta Blues Singers (they say he sold his soul to the devil…)
16) James Brown – Live at the Apollo
17) Ramones – Ramones
18) XTC – Oranges and Lemons
19) Sex Pistols – Never Mind the Bollocks
20) Bob Marley and the Wailers – The Legend
21) John Coltrane – A Love Supreme
22) Public Enemy – It Takes A Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back (yeah boy!)
23) Lynyrd Skynyrd – Pronounced
24) The Allman Brothers Band – At Fillmore East
25) Simon And Garfunkel – Bridge Over Troubled Waters

I feel dirty for not putting a single Zappa album in this, also I did not want to duplicate artists, or else this would have been all Dylan and Cash. There are others I labored over to try and justify into this list, but if I had to start over without everything these are the first 25 albums I’d purchase.

Tip of the cap to you there. I grew out of all the “free jazz” I ever liked (I broke my Sun Ship CD in half in a drunken fit, screaming “NOISE! NOISE! NOTHING BUT NOISE!” after trying to embrace it for a year), but I hung onto “A Love Supreme.” Very soothing.

i tend to be skeptical of the sex pistols

partially because they are more important for what they represented than their actual musical production. judged critically, i can’t say that never mind the bollocks is better than, say, anything the clash or the buzzcocks did. in fact i’d even give PIL the nod as rotten actually tried to move out of just being sonically obnoxious into actually creating music that said something itself.

I really wrestled

with not having Exile on Main Street in my list, it is a great album. Prince was another artist I wanted to include, but I just couldn’t find room on mine. I wish that Prince at the SuperBowl could count as an album. We will never see a better halftime show, imo.

I almost went with Skylarking, but imo Oranges and Lemons is top to bottom better.

Some great choices in there to, and these would be in the 26+

There's a lot...

…of anti-U2 out there, and I get it. I think you have to have been a certain age at a certain time for this band to have spoken to you. So much of what they became and/or produced after the mid-eighties was off-putting in its uber-pop way. As a teenage boy, this album really grabbed me.

A lot (all?) of my albums are on my list because of memories I have attached to them. 311 Music is a prime example. Many albums I bumped off just didn’t carry the same emotional attachment for me, but I would rate them higher on a more objective level.

1. Jimi Hendrix Experience – Axis: Bold as Love (given to me early in elementary school by my hippie uncle, Axis doesn’t get as much attention as others, but songs like Little Wing, Bold as Love, and Spanish Castle Magic helped introduce me to a lifetime of rock.)
2. Van Morrison – Astral Weeks (can’t bean the man’s voice, nor can you match his daringness in making this album. As a caveat, I’m not repeating artists here b/c my list was too damn long when I did. Otherwise, Moondance would most definitely be on this list, in the top 12.)
3. The Beatles – Revolver (The greatest band of all time, Won’t entertain arguments tot he contrary.)
4. Pink Floyd – Dark Side of the Moon (let’s be honest, who hasn’t listened to this album start to finish? )
5. The Rolling Stones – Let it Bleed (liked it more than Exile, second greatest band of all time.)
6. Bob Marley – Legend (again, this album is timeless. I would argue that Exodus was the more complete album, but the ongoing global impact of Legend can’t be underestimated)
7. Johnny Cash – At Folsom Prison (Cash was stickin it to the Man for a lifetime before the NWA and Public Enemy hit the scene.)
8. Miles Davis – Bitches Brew (drugs are bad, mmmmkay, but some musicians do their best work on them)
9. The Band – The Last Waltz (I don’t care that it’s technically a soundtrack, its plays as an album and highlights the dissolution of a seminal band.)
10. Allman Bros. Band – Live at the Fillmore (southern rock at its finest)
11. Marvin Gaye – What’s Going On (the album is genius, and the Funk Brothers were allowed to showcase their talents, which only complimented Gaye’s powerful voice and lyrics)
12. The Meters – Look-Ka Py Py (they invented the funk, what more can you say?)
13. Robert Johnson – King of the Delta Blues Singers (he influenced every single artist on this list)
14. Led Zeppelin – Physical Graffiti (also given to me by my uncle, rings as my favorite of theirs after almost 20 years.)
15. Guns N Roses – Appetite for Destruction (if you don’t like GnR, then fuck you)
16. Michael Jackson – Thriller (dude was batshit insane, but every single song on this album was a repeat listen)
17. Dire Straits – Dire Straits (Music from Big Pink also in consideration)
18. Talking Heads – Stop Making Sense (Byrne is on more booger sugar than Tony Montana, but damn if it doesn’t make for great listening)
19. The Stooges – The Stooges (let there be punk)
20. Elton John – Goodbye Yellow Brick Road (love this album, NTTAWWT)
21. Dr. Dre – The Chronic
22. Sam Cooke – Portrait of a Legend (for all the ladies in the house, you know his voice makes you melt)
23. Black Sabbath – Paranoid
24. Queen – Night at the Opera
25. Cream – Disreali Gears (while not an influence in my discretion on this list, best album cover of all time)

Honorable Mentions: Black Star – Mos Def and Talib Kweli are Black Star, The Who – Tommy, The Roots- Phrenology, Coltrane – Love Supreme, Nirvana – Unplugged, Outkast – Aquemini, Parliament – Maggot Brain, Professor Longhair – New Orleans Piano

Tongue-in-cheek, but deserve mentions: Jimmy Buffett – Cheeseburger in PAradise, Bone Thugs-N-Harmony – E 1999 Eternal

"14. Led Zeppelin – Physical Graffiti (also given to me by my uncle, rings as my favorite of theirs after almost 20 years.)"

I agree this is my favorite from them and is high up on my list—put it in and let it play with no reason to skip ahead on either CD—it is like all their other ones for the most part with a great blend of rock, blues, easy listening, one instrumental, ect. I love to mellow out to ‘down by the seaside’.

1. A Decade of Steely Dan—I know a greatest hits and decade in the title, but it is my favorite band and it is awesome having all those songs on the same CD
2. Physical Graffiti
3. U2—War (listened to that over and over form ‘Sunday, bloody Sunday’ to ‘Drowning Man’ when I was young)
4. Pyromania—Def Leopard (another one I listened to a ton when I was a youngin)
5. Aces High—Iron Maiden
6. Louder Than Bombs—The Smiths (put it in at let it play out—great while driving as I associate it with Cajun country now)
7. The Cars—The Cars
8. Abbey Road—The Beatles (Golden Slumbers to the End—awesome sequence)
9. Trace—Son Volt (my sig and one of my favorite songs)
10. Music for the Morning after—Pete Yorn (something more recent but great from start to finish)
11. Yankee Hotel Foxtrot—Wilco
12. Stain—Living Color
13. Zooropa—U2
14. Ten—Pearl Jam
15. Some Girls—Rolling Stones
16. Nothing like the Sun—Sting
17. Me Against the World—Tupac
18. The soundtrack to Midnight Cowboy—love the theme song
19. Pink Moon—Nick Drake
20. Meat is Murder—The Smiths
21. Just Like Heaven—The Cure
22. 100% Fun—Mathew Sweet
23. Appetite For Destruction—Guns and Roses (the real shit in the day of the hair bands although I do like girls, girls, girls from Motley Crew)
24. Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik—Outcast
25. Off the Wall—Michael Jackson (just beat out Thriller)
26. 1984—Van Hallen (another one I listened to a ton)

Like I’ve said before, Kanye is a douche but he makes great music, including two classic albums.
I saw Erykah Badu at the HOB in Myrtle Beach a few years ago. dead prez and Floetry opened up for her. Best. Show. Ever. And “Like Water For Chocolate” is so beautiful, I think even non hip-hop heads could enjoy it. Especially fans of jazz and just good music i.e. Time Travelin’ (A Tribute To Fela).

Good picks in there.

It’s funny but I know a lot of songs on Operation Mindcrime because my dad would play that album constantly. He even bought the VHS, I think.

interesting R.E.M pick

there are some fantastic songs on that record but i’d have to say Reckoning is a superior album under the definition you offer.

For my money, Reckoning is too topically scattershot and it has a lack of focus

that makes me doubt REM’s confidence and self-identity at that point in their careers. Murmur and Reckoning contain great songs, but Fables of the Reconstruction is the first time I hear REM,the unabashed band from Athens singing mature songs—sorry, but Little America, Camera and Letter never sent are terrible, forced immature songs.

Loved both of them. I put both albums on one cassette and gave them to one of my over-the-road trucker buddies. He had nothing but C & W in his collection until that point. The next weekend he came off the road and said that his new cassette was all he had listened to the whole week. I lol’d.

and that’s kinda how i made my list. i really couldn’t put an album on the list if i didn’t a) own it and b) play it the fuck out. yhf was an absolute beast for wilco, who i would argue is one of the best bands going. same for z. it might not be the most successful record, but it sure as hell put mmj on the map. i couldn’t have the list without some little feat. i fucking hate that i missed them at variety playhouse this weekend. work bullshit got in the way. i wanted the black keys on the list, and kinda went back and forth on brothers or thickfreakness. i went with brothers cause i think in ten years brothers ill still be playing the hell outta that one.

Here's mine

These aren’t in order, but rather, If I could only have 25 cds, what would they be. A few notes thrown in here and there.

1. AC/DC – Back in Black (truly a classic)
2. Aerosmith – Rocks (so many good songs. Unfortunately they hardly play ANY of them live anymore)
3. Alice in Chains – Dirt
4. Beach Boys – Pet Sounds (The Beatles wrote Sgt Peppers in an attempt to one-up this album…true story)
5. Beastie Boys – License to Ill (Blew a pair of Cerwin Vega 15" woofers to this, back in the day)
6. Dire Straits – Brothers in Arms
7. Dream Theater – Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence
8. Frank Zappa – Apostrophe
9. Guns and Roses – Appetite for Destruction (I got this when it first came out. I still have the original with the first, subsequently removed, album cover)
10. Iron Maiden – Live After Death (probably one of my favorites because I was at one of the concerts they recorded for this)
11. Kenny Wayne Sheppard – Ledbetter Heights (saw him play a club in Shreveport when he was 16)
12. Led Zeppelin – Led Zeppelin 2
13. Metallica – Master of Puppets
14. Peter Frampton – Frampton Comes Alive
15. Pink Floyd – Dark Side of the Moon
16. Queen – Night at the Opera
17. Queensryche – Empire
18. Red Hot Chili Peppers (anyone else remember when they were a funk band?)
19. Rush – Moving Pictures
20. Skid Row – Slave to the Grind
21. Slayer – Seasons in the Abyss
22. Soundgarden – Badmotorfinder (I remember hearing Outshined on the radio and going “WOW who are these guys?”
23. Tchaikovsky – 1812 Overature (On the sheet music, there is actually a part for a cannon)
24. Van Halen – Van Halen

And Badmotorfinger just missed my list.

by krnxprs on Jan 18, 2011 5:12 PM CST up reply actions

1. Van Halen – Van Halen A classic/gamechanger the minute it was released
2. Number of the Beast – Iron Maiden My favorite band of all time.
3. Master of Puppets – Metallica I was already into Metallica before, but they took it to a different level with this release.
4. Appetite for Destruction – Guns n Roses Life in the L.A. gutter. What’s not to like?
5. Back in Black – AC/DC Not bad for a band whose lead singer just died. We had this album playing while we warmed up in my HS basketball days.
6. Houses of the Holy – Led Zeppelin My prerequisite Zep album
7. Shout at the Devil – Motley Crue Sleaze metal from the Sunset Strip
8. Are You Experienced – Jimi Hendrix Set the mood and listen to this on headphones. Seriously.
9. The Doors: Original Soundtrack Recording – The Doors My wife’s and my first date was this movie.
10. Texas Flood – Stevie Ray Vaughn SRV’s first (I think)
11. Ah Via Musicom- Eric Johnson I’ve always kept this in my vehicle.
12. Songs You Know By Heart – Jimmy Buffet I’m in Baldwin County- if the cops pull you over and you don’t have some Buffet, they take you to jail. The kids love to sing along to Cheeseburger in Paradise and so do I.
13. One More From The Road – Lynyrd Skynyrd See Jimmy Buffet
14. Alive II – KISS Yes, I was a member (I guess I still am) of the KISS Army.
15. Escape – Journey Good songs, I always thought Neal Schon didn’t get his due. Pop this in (yes, pop describes inserting a cassette) and it’s make-out city (in 1982 anyway)
16. Exit Stage Left- Rush I love the crowd sing-a-long on Closer to the Heart, and Alex Lifeson’s guitar. Neil Peart? Who’s he? ; )
17. Soldiers Under Command – Stryper Christian Metal that crossed into mainstream. I’ve always been a big fan of this band. Great sound, catchy riffs.
18. Elv1s: 30 #1 Hits Elvis: don’t leave home without it. We love to do our best Elvis singing along to this CD on family road trips. Good times.
19. Metal Church – Metal Church Classic metal album. Powerful stuff.
20. Powerslave – Iron Maiden Great lyrics, long guitar solos, Maiden Rules….
21. Piece of Mind – Iron Maiden ….and their live shows are legendary
22. Kill em All – Metallica Kicks ass-that is all
23. Exodus – Bob Marley Great music from the master.
24. A Higher Form Of Killing – Intruder Awesome album from a pretty much unknown thrash metal band from Nashville. Great headbanging from start to finish.
25. Surfer Rosa – Pixies I love this album and it gets on my nerves at the same time.

So maybe I’m stuck (mostly) in the 90s. Sue me. These are the albums that have meant the most to me personally, and the 90s happened to be ages 15-25 for me, so… yeah.

Also, I do tend to find bands that I like and stick with them, so there are several repeats here. But I did have a large number (over 400 albums, from which I picked over 100 that I wanted to put on this here list) that I combed through to get here:

1. Muse — Absolution (Stockholm Syndrome) It’s a safe guess that I’m the biggest Muse fan on here.
2. Black Crowes — The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion (No Speak No Slave)
3. Led Zeppelin — I (Babe I’m Gonna Leave You)
4. Radiohead — The Bends (Just) My classic debate for music fans: Favorite Radiohead album? The Bends is best, IMO. If it’s OK Computer, there’s a decent chance you’re just following critics. And if it’s Kid A or Amnesiac, you’re probably on meth.
5. Weezer — Weezer (The Blue Album) (My Name is Jonas) Somehow I never actually picked this album up until a few years ago, but it’s definitely one of my favs now.
6. Muse — Origin of Symmetry (New Born) Objectively this might be a better Muse album than my #1, but I got Absolution first, so there’s some attachment there.
7. Led Zeppelin — III (Gallows Pole)
8. Arcade Fire — Neon Bible (Antichrist Television Blues) Just got this one last year. The best album I’ve bought in a while.
9. Radiohead — OK Computer (Paranoid Android)
10. Blues Traveler — Travelers & Thieves (What’s For Breakfast) What, no one else has BT in their top 10? Losers. They were my favorite band from the time this one came out in ‘91 till Four came out in ’95 and ruined them. If you only know “Run Around”, a lot of this album sounds significantly different and less poppy than that.
11. Pearl Jam — Vs. (Elderly Woman Behind The Counter In A Small Town) Kind of surprising myself that my top PJ album didn’t make the top 10, but it’s close. I’m still a huge Pearl Jam fan.
12. Led Zeppelin — IV (When The Levee Breaks)
13. U2 — Joshua Tree (Bullet The Blue Sky) As someone else mentioned, I see a lot of U2 hate on here, which IMO is just posturing. If you don’t like this album, you’re not a music fan. But I will grant you that everything after Rattle and Hum is crap.
14. The Postal Service — Give Up (Such Great Heights) This is a great album if you’re not familiar with it.
15. Pearl Jam — Ten (Black)
16. Smashing Pumpkins — Siamese Dream (Cherub Rock)
17. Tom Petty — Wildflowers (Honey Bee)
18. R.E.M. — Eponymous (Radio Free Europe) Yeah, I know this is a Greatest Hits. Sorry, but I got this one first many years ago and I always listen to this one and not the individual albums.
19. Rage Against the Machine — Evil Empire (People Of The Sun)
20. Smashing Pumpkins — Adore (Pug) This song is probably not a favorite of theirs for most people, but I think it’s a really great album. It’s got a great cohesive feel as a full album.
21. Nirvana — Nevermind (Stay Away) Yeah I know, sacrilege putting it this low on a 90s fan’s list. Of course this album is amazing and I love every song here, it just didn’t rank quite as high as some others for me personally.
22. Silversun Pickups — Carnavas (Well Thought Out Twinkles) Their newer one, Swoon, has some better songs, but this is a better album, IMO.
23. Tool — Lateralus (Parabola) This is my only Tool album. There could be others that are better, but I wouldn’t know. I love this one.
24. Live — Throwing Copper (T.B.D.) One of the 90s’ more forgotten bands, but this and Mental Jewelry are great albums.
25. Morphine — Yes (Honey White) I had to re-arrange a little to get this one in here, but it deserves it.

And a top 10 Honorable mention (because I literally ranked over 100 before I stopped to notice how few 25 really is):
Muse — Showbiz
R.E.M. — Out of Time
Muse — Black Holes & Revelations
White Stripes — Elephant
Filter — Title of Record
Poe — Hello
Toad the Wet Sprocket — Fear
Silversun Pickups — Swoon
Rusted Root — When I Woke
Jeff Buckley — Grace

Black Crowes – nice…another one I missed.

So safe to say you're a Muse fan eh? ;-)

Then I got to go all out for the Hottest BAND in the WORLD: KISS

Rock and Roll Over
Destroyer
Love Gun
Kiss Alive II
Double Platinum (EXCEPT Dr. Love on this version as they totally trashed the intro)

Also just for grins and comments re: AC/DC Back in Black- Anyone a fan of the solo from Shake a Leg? IMO one of the best solos on that album.

I think your #2 and 3 picks are inspired. You’ll see why in a second. I woulda chose the same song for Zep, but would have went with My Morning Song for the Crowes.

by krnxprs on Jan 18, 2011 5:22 PM CST up reply actions

My Morning Song was originally my fav, but over time I gravitated to No Speak.

The triangle solo does it for me. :)

The song choices aren’t necessarily the best songs on each album per se. They’re just representative, or in some cases something that maybe people wouldn’t have heard as much as some other songs.

1. Muse — Absolution (Stockholm Syndrome) It’s a safe guess that I’m the biggest Muse fan on here.

Actually I would have put Hullabaloo on there instead.

This is not a very diverse list, musically.

I like rock. I like guitars. I like singers with gruffy voices.

1. Guns N’ Roses — Appetite for Destruction — The most balls out, awesome rock album ever. EVER.
2. AC/DC — Back in Black — Possibly makes my opinion of Appetite slightly incorrect.
3. Led Zeppelin — Led Zeppelin — You got your blues in my metal. No, you got your metal in my blues. Brilliant!
4. The Black Crowes — Southern Harmony and Musical Companion — The best album from one of the best bands ever. Definitely the best guitar work of all their albums. It has a consistent feel throughout that makes it more than a collection of great songs.
5. Alice in Chains — Unplugged — AIC was heads and shoulders above the rest of the so-called Seattle grunge movement. Picking Unplugged is kind of cheating because it’s basically a greatest hits album, but every song is as good as the original and in some cases way better.
6. Izzy Stradlin and the Ju Ju Hounds — Izzy Stradlin and the Ju Ju Hounds — Izzy was the single coolest rocker from the 80’s and 90’s and this is his best album.
7. The Jimi Hendrix Experience — Axis: Bold as Love — Shear artistry.
8. The Jimi Hendrix Experience — Electric Ladyland — I want to go to there. Seriously, I have I hard time deciding which is better so this is basically a tie with Axis.
9. Led Zeppelin — Led Zeppelin IV — So many legendary songs on this album.
10. The Four Horsemen — Nobody Said It Was Easy — Solid, straightforward rock n’ roll from beginning to end with some insanely aggressive and perfectly phrased soloing.
11. Megadeth — Rust in Peace — Riffs nearly as good as Metallica’s, but way, way better solos.
12. Faster Pussycat — Wake Me When It’s Over — In a word: RAW. Unbelievable riffs, tongue in cheek lyrics, great songs. Often offensive, sometimes tender, always fun. A perfect hard rock album.
13. Creedence Clearwater Revival — The Concert — One of America’s greatest songwriters proves he’s also one of America’s greatest performers.
14. Metallica — And Justice for All — Duh
15. Metallica — Master of Puppets — More duh
16. Tesla — The Great Radio Controversy — An unbelievable guitar rock album, plus every song is great.
17. Jimi Hendrix — Blues — Compilation alert! But it’s way too damn good to not make this list. Also, I see it as an important document on the influences of one of the greatest rock musicians of all time.
18. The Black Crowes — Shake Your Money Maker — It’s just a rock album, which, at the time it debuted, was practically an unheard of thing in my lifetime.
19. Candlebox — Candlebox — Every song is so good. It’s hard to believe this was their debut album.
20. Motley Crue — Shout at the Devil — It’s raw, offensive, and sometimes frightening. Calling this glam metal is wrong, well, if you can ignore the hair, makeup, and spandex.
21. The (London) Quireboys — Little Bit of What You Fancy — A British band that really makes me feel my southern rock roots.
22. Aerosmith — Toys in the Attic — If I could, I’d put Pandora’s Box in my top 5. Instead, this one makes the list by virtue of being my favorite album among Aerosmith, Get Your Wings, Toys, and Rocks.
23. AC/DC — Live — Technically not a live album, but a compilation of live performances. Still, the performances are great and there are so many gems on here.
24. Cult — High Octane Cult — I know, greatest hits discouraged, but I listen to it so much I had to include it.
25. Lynyrd Skynyrd — Skynyrd’s Innyrds — It doesn’t include all their best, but it’s the best single CD collection of Skynyrd to me, and omitting Skynyrd from my list is not an option.

Jimi Hendrix Blues is a great album.

Shake Your Money Maker was a one of my favs in high school, but I rank Southern Harmony and Amorica above it now, though it was the ground breaker.

GNR probably would’ve made my list except that I don’t actually own App For Destruction myself. I only have their greatest hits, and I wasn’t going to include that one.

I know what you mean about not actually owning the album.

I think Amorica and Money Maker are pretty close but MM gets the nod for sentimentality. But if they had put that super horny remix of Hard to Handle that radio stations were so fond of on the the album it’d probably get ranked right above By Your Side instead.

Wauw these lists are all either very white or very black

That’s kind of interesting to me. Very few lists go beyond color lines – Robert Johnson, Jimi Hendrix, Bob marley are the classic few black artists allowed on canonized lists made by white people (see Rolling Stone).

Not that there’s anything wrong with it. I’ll try and get one on here soon. I think I have a list at home. Number one though, is Born to Run

I really don't think it is a color thing but a music taste thing

I see what your saying. However, most rappers are going to be black and most rock/metal is white. I think it really goes to what music you like. My top 25 doesn’t really show my love of soul music because most soul artists realeased singles. I am the king of owning soul music. you would be hard pressed to find a guy with more soul albums. However, my list is based on my top 25 “Albums” because if I listed singles as albums 90% of my top 25 would be Otis Redding and Temptations singles.

So many albums were near-misses for me, though…several by Prince, one by Marvin Gaye, one by Run DMC, a few by P.E., a couple by Arrested Development, one by Al Green, several by Bob Marley, the soundtrack to ‘Superfly’, a couple of Parliament albums, one by the Pharcyde, a couple by Digable Planets, several by Stevie Wonder, a couple by De La Soul, one by Wu-Tang, a couple by A Tribe Called Quest…and that’s just off the top of my head….

I'll play (after getting sbn'd above)

These are in no overall order, but in the cases where there are multiples by the sasme band, those are in order of my preference:

1. Metallica – …And Justice for All (Songs are long, complex and diverse, with movements almost like classical…amazing arrangements, which prove not only are the boys the greatest Metal band ever, (not open to debate) but consummate musicians as well)
2. The Reverend Horton Heat – Liquor in the Front (This could have easily been just about any RHH album, but I went with my personal fave)
3. Pink Floyd – DSOTM (No commentary needed)
4. Gn’R – Appetite for Destruction ( One of the most perfect rock albums ever)
5. Megadeth- Countdown To Extinction (Probably the most comercially successful MD album)
6. The Meteors- Corpse Grinder (OTMAPP!)
7. Joe Satriani- Surfing With The Alien (I love Satch, and this album is still a staple and a background soundtrack to alot of my college life)
8. 311- 311 (Living at the beach, this album was the soundtrack of my mid twenties. Good times and hip hop reggae fusuion. Hells yeah)
9. AC/DC- Back in Black (No explanation needed)
10. Johnny Cash- At Folsom Prison (The original middle finger to the man)
11. Metallica- Master of Puppets ( like any list I make would have only one ‘Tallica album on it….right.)
12. Metallica- Metallica (The Black Album) ((Like any list I make would only have two ’Tallica albums on it…riiight.))
13. White Zombie- La Sexorcisto: Devil Music Volume 1 (Harder than Hell groove metal that just totally hooks you from the beginning…bonus for having Iggy Pop narrate the opening to “Black Sunshine”
14. Betty Blowtorch – Are You Man Enough? (Foulmouthed, filthy minded all girl punk band with members named Bianca Butthole, Blare N. Bitch, Sharon Needles and Judy Molish…how could you NOT love it? Pity Bianca was killed in a car crash and cut this band’s career short…)
15. L7- Bricks are Heavy (More foulmouthed, pissed off female punkers. This album is a classic and still gets heavy play on my Ipod)
16. Cult- Sonic Temple (Tough call here beween “Sonic” and “Electric”)
17. The Reverend Horton Heat- The Full-Custom Gospel Sounds of the Reverend Horton Heat (Same as ‘Tallica…no way there’s only one album by the Rev on my list)
18. Boston- Boston (One of the quintessential Rock albums…there’s not a bad cut on it)
19. Def Leppard- Hysteria (Fun British bubblegum Glam Metal…but lots of really good date memories with this one…)
20. Motley Crue – Shout at the Devil (The sunset Strip personified)
21. Iron Maiden – Powerslave (Again, tough call, but my personal fave)
22. Talking Heads – Little Creatures (To this day, I never get tired of this album)
23. The Smithereens- Green Thoughts (One of the most underrated pure rock bands of the 80’s and 90’s.)
24. Beastie Boys – License to Ill (Pure unadulterated fun)
25. U2 – The Joshua Tree (Too bad they went stright to Hell after this album…)

1984 – nice one, love the cover of the album

I love Lies — the slowed down You’re Crazy is one of my favorite songs to (attempt to) play — but I’m curious what makes you put it ahead of Appetite.

Time for Nico to chime in....in no particular order (complete with samples)

It’d probably be different if I did it again tomorrow. Hopefully you’ll see something you like…

01 The Beatles: RevolverShe Said She Said – I’m by no means a Beatles fanatic, but I love this album, love love love it. Listen to it all the time.

02 Talking Heads: Remain in LightBorn Under Punches – Sweet mercy do I love this record. It’s weird & cerebral and yet still kind of primal.

03 RadioheadOK ComputerParanoid Android – I’ve never felt more connected to an album than this probably.

04 Black SabbathParanoidParanoid – Black Sabbath = the birth of heavy metal. Ozzy > Dio. Both things I wrote there are irrefutable.

05 John Coltrane - Blue TrainBlue Train – I know A Love Supreme is the sexy pick, but this is the record that got me into jazz and it never disappoints when I return to it.

07 Johnny CashAt Folsom PrisonCocaine Blues – Murder, Drugs, Heartache, God, Redemption, Tragedy, Love, etc. Quintessential Cash.

08 Bob MarleyRastaman VibrationWar That song is the TRUTH. I figure most people would go with Legend or Exodus, but this is the one that does it for me.

09 Nick Cave & the Bad SeedsLet Love InDo You Love Me? – I’m not gonna lie, sometimes Nick Cave just ain’t right it seems…but he can turn a phrase like few others can and has an emotional range that goes from soft piano ballads to roaring punk. You’re the man Nick.

10 Orchestra BaobabPirate’s ChoiceWerente Serigne – Dr. Dre was onto something…slower is better. Great band from Senegal. This is the guaranteed to get people on the dancefloor record. Nobody knows the songs, but the grooves are seriously infectious and the vibe is unstoppable. I’ve never put this on at a party and not had at least 3-4 people ask me what it was because they wanted to go buy it. Works in all seasons, but is unstoppable at an outdoor BBQ at night. Also, some of the sickest, most understated guitar solos ever.

11 Sigur Rós( )Untitled Five (Álafoss) – One of those records that re-invented music for me. It was rock music that required a classical music attention span. The crescendo this thing builds to is unreal. Love it.

12 PhishBilly BreathesBliss/Billy Breathes – I’m sure many will consider this one of my more oddball inclusions, but this record meant so much to me at a certain time in my life that it still takes me to a happy place. Musically speaking, this was the album where they showed they could actually write 3-4 minute songs and not everything had to have bizarro time signatures or huge guitar solos.

13 Faith No MoreAngel DustCaffeine – This is a spectacularly weird album that covers so much stylistic ground that it’s not even funny. It’s such a far cry from “Epic” and The Real Thing that it’s almost like two different bands. The record label hated it and it was light years ahead of it’s time. One of the weirdest albums to ever get the greenlight from a major. Don’t believe me, listen to Malpractice and think “This came out in 1992?”

14 Sixteen HorsepowerSackcloth & Ashes – If you like the Gun Club or Nick Cave, chances are you’ll like 16HP. Very fire & brimstone-ish though. They were dark, religious and intense. Check out the wicked bandoneon on American Wheeze or the apocalyptic banjo on Black Soul Choir.

15 Sufjan Stevens – Illinoise – Come On! Feel the Illinoise! – I loathed this record when it came out, and now it’s on my Top 25 of all time. Funny how things change….

16 Steve ReichMusic for 18 MusiciansSection IIIA – This music has touched so much that’s come after it that you don’t even realize it. Reich was a true visionary and this is his masterpiece. It’s running time is around 45+ and it’s glory is beyond description. Do yourself a favor and listen to the entire thing.

17 TV on the RadioReturn to Cookie MountainPlayhouses – I firmly believe this’ll be an album from 2000-2009 that people will be talking about forever. It’s so layered, sonic, intense, beautiful and perfect. New music for a new millennium. no idea why the person chose to put this song over that video. oh well. ignore the video.

18 Buena Vista Social ClubBuena Vista Social ClubChan Chan – This song and album captivated me from the day I first heard it. I could listen to this song forever.

19 Ali Farka ToureNiafunkéAli’s Here – The king of African blues, from Niafunke, Mali.

20 Nikhil BanerjeeRagas Chandrakaush & Khamaj – Pretty much anything by him would suffice, but I couldn’t find either of the pieces I wanted online so here’s a short clip of him. Nikhil was the man (RIP).

21 The Gun ClubMiamiBrother & Sister and Carry Home – I came to this album waaaaaaaaaaay after the fact, but man, it blows me away on every listen.

22 Jeff BuckleyGraceLover You Should’ve Come Over – Biggest musical tragedy of the 90s. I wonder what he’d be putting out today. This album made a whole generation of people think he wrote “Hallelujah” and not Leonard Cohen.

23 RL BurnsideMississippi Hill Country Blues - Poor Black Mattie and Just Like a Woman – This acoustic blues record pretty much owns to a degree not understood by most.

24 MetallicaMaster of PuppetsMaster of Puppets – Nothing Metallica does today can take away from what this album is. One of the gold standards for metal.

25 Hank WIlliamsGoldI’m So Lonesome I Could Cry – Very few have been worthy to carry his torch.

Bejeezus, you have albums on there I completely blanked on.

RL, Sigur Ros, Nick Cave. I don’t know if I would have placed them in the top 25 or not, but I’m ashamed to say my list was not all inclusive at the beginning.

Oh and you’re dead on about Sigur Ros having movements within the song. And one of the best things about them is how they play live.

That was one thing I loved about RL too. He’d take his son and (who was the bassist when they traveled and how was he related?) someone else to have a rockin’ blues trio band. Got to see him about a decade ago at the Rhythm Room in Phoenix and it still remains one of my top five favorite bootlegs.

Buckley and Burnside...

…the first just missed for me, the second I failed to consider…but Gun Club! Man, that takes me back. I played soccer in the ‘80s with a German kid who loved them. We met his first day of school in the U.S., and he was listening to a bootleg of Violent Femmes playing in some German pub. We lived in a very small Southern town, and he completely freaked when I pulled out a homemade cassette with the Waterboys on one side and Gun Club on the other. My youth wasn’t totally wasted….

Y'all know what I find interesting...

…if you look at all these top 25’s (and probably the R10’s from week to week too)? There seems to be a dearth of women artists represented. Why do we think this is?

To be honest, I’m not sure I could name 25 of my favorite women artists…outside of the great Mahalia Jackson, Gladys Knight, Aretha Franklin, Tina Turner, and more recently Tori Amos, the Indigo Girls, Erykah Badu, India.Arie, Lauren Hill, Pink and Deb Talan of the Weepies. Care to add to this list?

No preaching here, brothers and sisters, just an honest question.

by Queen of the Universe on Jan 20, 2011 9:43 PM CST reply actions

I thought about that...

…as I was making my list. I believe Liz Phair and Nico (with VU) are the only women represented on my list. I did consider albums by Aretha, Erykah, and Lauren Hill, as well as Patti Smith, Tracy Chapman, Joan Jett, Buffy St. Marie, B-52’s, Nina Simone, and others. My guess is that a big reason so few females show up is that most of us who have posted here are fellas…that, and the fact that so much of what’s represented here is rock and/or rap, which have historically been male-dominated genres. What do you think, Q?

I don't know, I thought about including

Tori Amos’ first album, but is it really something I would characterize as a ‘great album’? It was remarkable because she is remarkable and caught a wisp of the Zeitgeist, but outside of my subjective enjoyment of it, is it a ‘great album’? I said no. Outside of Aretha and Patti Smith, I don’t think you can say that any of the artists recorded a great album.

How could I forget Tracy Chapman?

I think her self-titled album could stand up to most of the others on this page.

I’ve really been thinking about this tonight, and my best guess is similar to yours: to the best of my knowledge, the numbers favor the male artists in most musical genres (with the notable exception of country) so there are simply more of them to choose from. I’m pretty sure if you were to look at my ipod it’d be mostly men as well.

Either way, it’s interesting.

by Queen of the Universe on Jan 20, 2011 11:08 PM CST up reply actions

There is definitely a shortfall of women artists in my musical wheelhouse, which is classic rock and metal up through the 90’s. Heart is the only predominantly female band/artist that had any shot at making my list, but I only have one greatest hits album of theirs and it’s half “new Heart” i.e. pop. Maybe Pat Benetar, Fleetwood Mac, or the Pretenders if I had any of their albums.

Oh, and Janis Joplin. My parents had Kosmic Blues on vinyl and I listened to it some in high school, but I don’t remember it too well.

by krnxprs on Jan 21, 2011 1:04 AM CST up reply actions

I have Erykah on my Top 25.

But as you can tell, most of list is hip-hop and I can count on one hand how many female emcees I respect. Rapsody, Jean Grae, Eve, Rah Digga, Roxanne Shante, Bahamadia, Latifah, Mecca the Ladybug, MC Lyte and Lauryn Hill. Ok, maybe that was both hands, but you get the point.

In hip-hop, Hell Yea.

And it’s unfortunate that in that genre you must sell sex to be considered good. For instance, Rah Digga is probably my favorite female emcee of all time and she could rhyme circles around Lil Kim, Foxy Brown and especially Nicki Minaj. She’s just not considered “sexy” to the masses and that just sucks. BTW, I think Rah is mad sexy just for her mic skills alone.

There are plenty of female artists...

…that I love, but until fairly recently (mid to late 90s), music was still a field incredibly dominated by men. It’s even more that way in classical music. Quick name five female composers and/or conductors (probably can’t do it can you?) I’m sure there are a combination of factors contributing to this, some of which are sexist and some of which are benign.

In terms of popular music, rock music was so threatening to the establishment at its genesis that men that participated in it were considered bad seeds, so it’s very difficult to imagine a lot of women operating in that world given the morals of the times.

For those curious, here are some of my favorite female artists and/or bands with females in them that I listen to all of the time though:

St. Vincent
My Brightest Diamond
Mariza
The Fiery Furnaces
The Dirtbombs
Dengue Fever
Hildur Gudnodottir
Ceu
DeVotchKa
Ladytron
Joanna Newsom
M.I.A.
Rokia Traore
Kylesa
The Coathangers
Thao Nguyen
Eleni Karaindrou
PJ Harvey
Neko Case
The Talking Heads
Sonic Youth
Rain Machine
Paris Combo
Savina Yannatou
Kala Ramnath
The Cramps
Lovage
The Cardigans
etc.
etc.

Forgot about PJ Harvey...

nice. You’re right, I can’t think of any female composers off the top of my head. I didn’t think of the “bad element” aspect of things, but I sure am glad the definition of “being a lady” has evolved so well.

A couple more:

Regina Spektor, Rilo Kiley (not solo but female lead), Bjork, Annie Lenox, Beyonce (I don’t care what anyone says, I LOVE her), Ella Fitzgerald, Tegan and Sara, and of course Peaches.

Minnie Ripperton, Etta James, Beth Gibbons from Portishead, Feist, Teedra Moses, Marsha Ambrosius, Kid Sister, Corrine Bailey Rae, Chrisette Michele. Ok, I’ma stop for now.

My Top 25 Albums (for now)

these will more than likely change as i get older, but for where I am in life right now, these are gold. these all represent specific times in my life, and they all hold a near and dear place in my heart.
In alphabetical order (artist):

Alanis Morissette – The Collection
90s nostalgia that will never leave my iPod.

Arcade Fire – Neon Bible
perfection.

Beach Boys – Pet Sounds
i would try to harmonize with them when i was younger. now i just listen in amazement.

The Beatles – White Album
My dad gave me his copy when I was 14 or 15, and I would lie in on the floor in my bedroom and listen until i was about to fall asleep. i’m not a fanatic, but this album shaped a lot of my music taste.

Blink 182 – Greatest Hits
seriously couldn’t choose another. too many good songs on one album.

Brand New – The Devil and God Are Raging Inside me
definitely in my top 10 of all time… possibly in top 5.

City and Colour – Bring Me Your Love
a lot of emotional attachment to these songs.

Chasing Victory – I Call This Abandonment
local band that got fairly big, broke up, and are now supposedly back together working on new stuff (god i hope so). this album got worn out quite literally by my closest friends at the time. my copy has to be cleaned constantly to get it to play.

Daft Punk – Alive 2007
i thought i was the coolest ever for being the only one in my highschool who liked them. or had even heard of them. this came out and helped me do homework, run, dance, workout, make chores less boring, etc.

Death Cab for Cutie – Transatlanticism
It was a tight race between this and Plans, but this was when i first fell in love with Ben’s voice.

Fiona Apple – Extraordinary Machine
I love everything this woman has ever sang, ever. This album was on repeat during a time when I had just gotten out of a very unhealthy relationship and was learning to love myself (and still helps me do so).

Florence + The Machine – Lungs
I was just blown away at the beauty in her voice the first time I heard it. Not a classic (most of these aren’t) but one I will always love.

Johnny Cash – The Man in Black
… need I say more?

John Reuben – The Boy vs The Cynic
white boy beat poetry that owns.

Kanye West – My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy
Completely serious, folks. My love for this album > my care of what people think of my love for this album.

Kid Cudi – Man on the Moon: The End of Day
lyrics that kill me in the best way possible.

Led Zepplin – Led Zepplin IV
First heard when I was 12; been obsessed ever since.

mewithoutYou – Brother, Sister
Redefined “spiritual music” for me. Made me realize how open-ended life’s questions are and that it’s okay to leave them that way.

Modest Mouse – We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sank
beat out The Moon and Antarctica by sheer emotional attachment.

Queen – Jazz
another band i began to love at a very young age.

Sage Francis – A Healthy Distrust
salvador dali with lyrics.

Say Anything – … Is A Real Boy
guilty pleasure.

Tegan and Sara – The Con
lesbian twins with unique voices, crazy good guitar skills, and awesome lyrics. what’s not to like? oh, and i fell in love with the boy who gave me this; sadly we parted romantic ways (we’re still close friends) but at least i got good music out of it.

The Temptations – The Temptations in Japan
saw them live in my hometown when i was 14 as a christmas present from my mom. life changing experience.

Underoath – Define the Great Line
experimental melodic metal goodness to my ears. lyrics that hit home. topped of by getting to see them shortly after this was released.

Honorable mention:
Brand New – Daisy
mewithoutYou – A to B: Life
Mumford and Sons – Sigh No More
all of FIona’s music.
my mixtape of Jimmy Buffet, Flogging Molly, and Beatles rarities my dad gave me on my 13th birthday.

As i said before, this list will probably change next year, or maybe even next month.

I was in Iraq back when it was crazy out there when Late Registration dropped and I blasted that on the iPod nonstop, daily. It calmed me and got me through some tough times. I can understand where MBDTF would hit you in the heart at a similar point in your life.

Their earliest album,

Act of Depression, sounds like it was recorded in a basement. It’s actually kind of terrible if I can be totally honest.
If people try to tell you that The Changing of Times was their first, SCHOOL THEM. School them so hard.
They had 2 albums before that that virtually no one listened to. I actually like Cries Of The Past a lot, but AoD… ergh.

Christ..here goes nuthin':

First off, after a session with the S.A.G.E. (medicinal-grade), I have tried to narrow this down. Keep in mind, this is alphabetical..not any rank and will change as I link artists and albums with some personal relevance.

1 – AC/DC – High Voltage – Bon at his prime as a writer and wailer.
2 – Alice in Chains – Dirt – One of the best heavy-rock albums ever…up there with ..
3 – Black Sabbath – Paranoid – ..this album. Forging a sound influence that shaped a genre.
4 – Allman Brothers Band – Eat a peach – This is roots for me..you can’t fuck with it, as far as I’m concerned.
5 – Bad Brains – Bad Brains – This is what happens when Rastas listen to Sabbath and Budgie.
6 – Black Sabbath – Master of Reality – Perhaps the most complete Sabbath album, ever.
7 – Bob Marley – Catch a Fire – Bone-breaking grooves delivered with conviction.( Had to stop and listen, here.)
8 – The Cult – Sonic Temple – Brought radio-rock back to the mainstream( without too much pretentiousness)
9 – The Cure – The Head on the Door/ Kiss me,Kiss me,Kiss me – yeah, I know….a tie.
10 – Dead Kennedy’s – Give Me Convenience or Give Me Death – a guilty pleasure from way back.
11 – Deftones – Adrenalin – Turns out this " numetal" isn’t all that “nu”.
12 – The Doors – Waiting for the Sun – Landmark album. Made hippie-angst cool.
13 – Eric Clapton – 461 Ocean Blvd. – Slowhand…‘nuff said.
14 – Jane’s Addiction – Nothing’s Shocking – At the time, they were as original as any. ‘Psycho-Jazz’.
15 – Jimi Hendrix – Axis: Bold as Love – A nightmare and masterpiece, rolled into one…
16 – Band of Gypsy’s – Live at the Fillmore – …which evolved into this, eventually.
17 – Joe Satriani – Surfing with the Alien – the first instrumental-guitar-rock album that is as much technical, as it is melodic.
18 – Led Zeppelin – Physical Graffiti – this easily could’ve been a pick ‘em , like Hendrix.
19 – Mother Love Bone – Apple – a tragic shame..this band had potential.
20 – Pink Floyd – Meddle – this set the standard for psychedelia.
21 – Tool – Undertow – this album, to this day, still blows my mind.
22 – Red Hot Chili Peppers – Blood, Sugar,Sex,Magic – George Clinton helps produce some funk-blanc.
23 – The Police – Synchronicity – Huge album.
24 – Soundgarden – Superunknown – this is their ’Abbey Road’ .
25 – The Rolling Stones – Sticky Fingers – some dirty bollocks from the Stones.

There was not enough room….the above list is a good skim-over-the-top of what’s on my hard drive. There are really too many for me to sit down, split-hairs, and whittle it down to 25.. I see why Rolling Stone’s many lists over the years would generate the negative feedback they do…you always forget someone. Ah well, you get the general idea.

So...

I originally tried to order them in order of preference, then sort them into categories based on why they are my favorites, and then totally gave up upon realizing that any organization would be impossible. These are just in the order in which I wrote them down.
Music was my “thing” before football was, so forgive me if I get a little long-winded on why I like them so much…
Without further ado, here is my top 25, including a youtube link for each of my favorite songs just for kicks.

1. Kanye West – My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy
Favorite song: All Of The Lights
I paid for a real copy of this CD, my first time doing so since 9th grade.

2. Kanye West – 808s and Heartbreaks
Favorite Song: Welcome To Heartbreak
I know people didn’t like this album much because of the autotune overkill, but it did two miraculous things for me; it made me realize that my days of hating rap were over, and it introduced me to one of my favorite stars of all time. OF ALL TIME.

3. Kanye West – Late Registration
Favorite Song: Touch The Sky
I know, enough with the Kanye already. But he’s my favorite artist, and this album has some of my favorite feel-good songs. “Touch The Sky” never fails to cheer me up, and “Hey Mama” never fails to make me bawl.

4. Damien Rice – 9
Favorite Song: Grey Room
You don’t understand how difficult it was for me to pick a favorite song. Damien is an incredibly poetic songwriter. Every single one of his songs has the potential to put me in tears.

5. Tegan and Sara – The Con
Favorite Song: Nineteen
Three words: Break. Up. Album.

6. AFI – Sing The Sorrow
Favorite Song: Silver and Cold
SO many car sing-alongs to this album with my high school best friend.

7. Weezer – Pinkerton
Favorite Song: Falling For You
It’s a cliche among the hipster set, but it’s a masterpiece. It’s raw, it’s emotional, and at times hilarious.

8. Weezer – Blue Album
Favorite Song: Say It Ain’t So
The first album I bought with my own money.

9. Kid Cudi – Man On The Moon
Favorite Song: Up, Up, & Away

10. Lady Gaga – The Fame Monster (Fame Re-release)
Favorite Song: Monster
I may get a lot of shit for this one, but let me explain one thing: Lady Gaga changed my life. Sure, the overplay of her hits is grating, but she treats her fans like treasure and her commitment to a message of individuality and empowerment is far more important to me than being annoyed at hearing “Just Dance” for the 600th time. Her success and the meaning behind her music empowered me to fight back against everything and everyone who ever told me “No you can’t,” and for that, I adore her and this album.

11. Aphex Twin – Selected Ambient Works
Favorite Song: Stone In Focus
Studying/meditation music.

12. Girl Talk – Feed The Animals
Favorite Song: Play Your Part Pt. 2

13. Journey – Greatest Hits
Favorite Song: Faithfully
I know it’s discouraged, but my mom introduced me to the glory that is Journey through this album in particular, and it’s always stuck with me.

14. Lupe Fiasco – The Cool
Favorite Song: Go Go Gadget Flow

15. Maylene and the Sons of Disaster – Self-Titled
Favorite Song: Tough As John Jacobs
Obligatory southern rock band.

16. Bright Eyes – I’m Wide Awake It’s Morning
Favorite Song: Poison Oak
Rainy day/feeling sorry for myself album.

17. Norma Jean – O God The Aftermath
Favorite Song: Charactarantula
The first heavy music I listened to.

18. Norma Jean – Bless The Martyr And Kiss The Child
Favorite Song: Memphis Will Be Laid To Waste
INCREDIBLE album. No words for how much I admire Josh Scogin (the vocalist).

19. The Chariot – The Fiancee
Favorite Song: And Shot Each Other
Josh Scogin again. Go to :40 on that video for another reason why I admire him. Heard it live 3 times and never fail to get chills.

20. Queen – Greatest Hits I
Favorite Song: Somebody To Love
Again, discouraged, but man I love Queen.

21. Regina Spektor – Begin To Hope
Favorite Song: Samson
Beautiful woman, beautiful voice, incredible talent.

22. Taking Back Sunday – Tell All Your Friends
Favorite Song: You’re So Last Summer
9th grade, first breakup. That should say it all.

23. Underoath – Define The Great Line
Favorite Song: Moving For The Sake Of Motion
Favorite band and favorite album for a good 2 years of my life.

24. Underoath – They’re Only Chasing Safety
Favorite Song: Down, Set, Go
My first music with screaming in it. It began an era…

25. The Used – Self-Titled
Favorite Song: Buried Myself Alive
Is anyone catching on that I was emo for a while there?
Really though, this one has special meaning. 4 days before I turned 16, my friend passed away. All my friends had been planning for months to go to a huge concert that just so happened to be the same day as his funeral. We went to both with heavy hearts. When The Used played, the lead singer came out to play an acoustic version of "On My Own" and my friend and I barely made it to the chorus before bursting into tears. I can’t even remember the moment without crying.
Music was integral to my healing and mourning, and this album was extremely important to all of that.

Honorable mention:
As I Lay Dying – An Ocean Between Us
Fall Out Boy – Take This To Your Grave
The Arcade Fire – Neon Bible
Ella Fitzgerald – Greatest Hits
TI – King

What punk bands did you get into? I got more into the obvious: Ramones and The Clash.

Ramones, Slits, Sex Pistols, Clash…it didn’t matter as long as it was visceral.
