I couldn't disagree more.
This ESPN commentary is great because it makes clear the salient point that “no new information” does not equal “Auburn does not smell rotten.” The mores the better, I say.
There is nothing new here.
But I think the article does reveal the generally held view by everybody not form the SEC. Let’s face it, the rest of CFB thinks the SEC is dirty and they think Slive ought to be spelled Slime.
And to be honest I can see where they are coming from.
If Auburn was in New Mexico and we never played them I would still hate them and their dumb coach and their cheating players.
And
Slive did more than enough to show that he’s a slime ball by dismantling the investigation office of the SEC and tell schools that all info that is going to the NCAA most be given to him for approval.
A horse is a horse of course of course his name is Mr. Ed; unless he's donkey then of course his name is Tim.
Key excerpt
What matters is if money changed hands, if money was laundered and if Mississippi State was the only school approached by Cecil Newton. So far, nothing.
No benefits = no punishment 100% of the time.

That is Pete's argument.
If Auburn was in New Mexico and we never played them I would still hate them and their dumb coach and their cheating players.
It's not an argument, it's fact.
The next time they punish anyone with no benefits changing hands will be the first.
'There are two pains in life. There is the pain of discipline and the pain of disappointment. If you can handle the pain of discipline, then you'll never have to deal with the pain of disappointment,'- Nick Saban
That is not true.
Last year Portland State Bball team was banned from post season play by the NCAA for making bad grades.
If Auburn was in New Mexico and we never played them I would still hate them and their dumb coach and their cheating players.
That's a completely different rule.
I was talking about amateurism.

Just going on what you said as in
“The next time they punish anyone with no benefits changing hands will be the first.”
If Auburn was in New Mexico and we never played them I would still hate them and their dumb coach and their cheating players.
Come on, man.
Yeah, they’ll bust you for bad grades. Or drugs. Or assault. Or cheating in school.
Of course, I guess being allowed to play without actually going to class could be seen as an extra benefit. Still doesn’t apply to anything to do with Cam.
'There are two pains in life. There is the pain of discipline and the pain of disappointment. If you can handle the pain of discipline, then you'll never have to deal with the pain of disappointment,'- Nick Saban
You said that before, and I tried to correct you before.
If Cecil had solicited AU for money (and it was proven), Cam would be ineligible at AU. That’s regardless of whether or not benefits changed hands.
If Bama never wins another national championship, the Barn will match our total in the year 2593. Please God, don't let me have a Futurama incident.
Or alternatively if Cam had known that Cecil solicited MSU,
again regardless of whether or not benefits changed hands.
Point being that I’m sure these hypotheticals have played out somewhere else in the past.
If Bama never wins another national championship, the Barn will match our total in the year 2593. Please God, don't let me have a Futurama incident.
That may be what the rules say
but it’s never been enforced. Every punishment has had benefits attached.
'There are two pains in life. There is the pain of discipline and the pain of disappointment. If you can handle the pain of discipline, then you'll never have to deal with the pain of disappointment,'- Nick Saban
So, what if the money exchange occurs now . . .
. . . when Cam is no longer a student?
Any exchange of benefits between school/booster and player would trigger punishment
that said, it doesn’t make a hell of a lot of sense that he’d play out the season before getting paid since he’s now signed with an agent. I’d bet that ol’ Bus Cook provided a lil’ somethin’ up front, which would be fine since he has now declared himself a pro athlete.
'There are two pains in life. There is the pain of discipline and the pain of disappointment. If you can handle the pain of discipline, then you'll never have to deal with the pain of disappointment,'- Nick Saban
Sure
But the point is that you said no benefits = no punishment. Wouldn’t the NCAA, in fact, punish them if they discovered an agreement that was to pay Cecil after Cam left Auburn?
There would then be benefits
but I’m not dealing in ridiculous hypotheticals. My statement isn’t speculative one way or the other. What I said was that the NCAA has never, to date, punished an athlete or school for amateurism issues where no extra benefits were received. I’m not part of the NCAA so it would be pointless for me to speculate on what they would do in the future, though I hope they don’t start punishing kids who didn’t get paid.
'There are two pains in life. There is the pain of discipline and the pain of disappointment. If you can handle the pain of discipline, then you'll never have to deal with the pain of disappointment,'- Nick Saban
Daddy didn't know for certain that . . .
. . . his son would win the Heisman and become a projected 1st round draft pick when he started asking around for money. If the NCAA had discovered any evidence of an agreement prior to the exchange of benefits, it would have been interesting to see how the NCAA would have handled it.

Didn't want another Cam fanshot (Camshot?)
so I’ll just post this little nugget here. If Cecil watched the game in violation of his agreement with the Barn, then Jay Jacobs… wait for it… DIDN’T KNOW.
"My understanding is he actually came in after the game was over for the celebration," athletic director Jay Jacobs told the Birmingham News. "Now, I haven’t spoken to Mr. Newton. But based on what his attorney said, that’s my understanding.
So, for those counting at home:
Cam didn’t know the laptop was stolen
Cecil didn’t know Kenny Rogers was looking for money
Oops, lied. Cecil and Kenny were in cahoots but Cam didn’t know about any of it
Jay Jacobs didn’t know Cecil was in the stadium
Conclusion: That’s a whole lotta not-knowin’ people not knowin’ a whole lotta not known shit.

Don't think Cecil going to the game
would get anyone in trouble, it just looks bad.
If Auburn was in New Mexico and we never played them I would still hate them and their dumb coach and their cheating players.
It wouldn't.
Still funny though.

Getting into the game; no trouble.
Where he was after the game was over (field, sidelines, etc) and how does that not equate to special access that a common fan cannot gain; how does that parlay into this.
It's not what you've done but what you are doing that matters.

"no longer attending classes at Auburn"....
wow..he went to a semester maybe 2 worth of classes and people think he WASN"T just a “hired” gun…really?
It would be very interesting to know Cam's
attendance record at AU but that is not available to the public.
If Auburn was in New Mexico and we never played them I would still hate them and their dumb coach and their cheating players.
New intern on the WJOX roundtable is and Auburn student
And he slipped up the other day when asked if he had class with Cam and said ‘not many people did’ and refused to elaborate.

Yep, lots of sleaze, stench, and smoke
but nothing meriting sanction by the NCAA. So it goes.

"but nothing meriting sanction by the NCAA."
That we know of yet. Wishful thinking on my part but hopefully something will come from all of this smoke.
Good clarification
Let’s see how things shake out. Few things would make me happier than to see the Barn burn.

I feel like the only way
we are ever going to get the thruth is if someone at the barn gets “wronged” by Lowder, quits or gets fired and decides to squeal. Hopefully the possibility of that happening is good because when you are dealing with people getting money on the sligh, they most of the time get greedy and start asking for more than someone is willing to give them.
I pray that it is only a matter of time not because I hate the barn (and believe me I do) but because it looks bad for the SEC and in turn Alabama because we are in the SEC. I don’t want ANYONE thinking that we are cheaters like those damn barners!

You are right in one sense
as long as the “family” is all in nothing will happen.
Don’t worry the rest of America has already decided the SEC cheats. Don’t expect any good press outside of the south.
If Auburn was in New Mexico and we never played them I would still hate them and their dumb coach and their cheating players.
Check out the comments on Texas' SB blog Burnt Orange Nation regarding OL Westermann (sp?)
and his commit to Auburn. Politics and football make for some strange bedfellows.
All my friends are nonconformists, so I decided to be one too
In the past two weeks AU has
stolen two 5 star recruits who had been committed for months. Now they did not steal these folks from Ole Miss or Clemson. No, they stole then from UA & Texas. And they stole them while stil under an NCAA cloud of sorts.
How they did it is anybody’s guess. I for one think it smells but who knows maybe the “All In” brand is working for them. It doesn’ t matter though because even if they are cheating nothing is going to happen.
I had predicted a strong finish for Auburn and it sadly looks like I’m right.
The whole thing though shows that we are going to have our hands full with AU for a while to come. We still have better players and a better HC. Nevrtheless, those predicting AU’s quick demise are sadly going to be disappointed.
Unless they do get it from the NCAA. Which, as I said, isn’t going to happen.
If Auburn was in New Mexico and we never played them I would still hate them and their dumb coach and their cheating players.

Here’s a shot in the dark: Westerman’s position coach at TX is gone, costing them the recruiting link they worked so hard to establish. Calloway wanted to switch to RB but AU convinced him that he wouldn’t be good enough to crack the depth chart at that position at UA (likely true).

Also, you can expect them to get some bump
from winning the NC, compared to their previous stature as an 8-5 team a year ago. Not saying they’re not also playing dirty, but some of their recruiting success now is predictable.

I asked this on another post and didn't get an answer.
I live out of state and try to avoid paying attention to AU as much as possible. Can someone explain why they say “All In”? What do they mean by it? I thought it was something that we used to describe the way they were putting all of their chips on Newton, by playing him in spite of the NCAA’s warnings about possible eligibility problems. They were effectively betting the house that they wouldn’t get caught. But now I find out that it’s actually some sort of slogan that they use in a non-ironic way. WTF do those inbreds mean by it?

It seems to me you understand it as well as anyone else. I think the full slogan is “Family. All in.” Mixing metaphors works. Who knew?
Ahhhhhh...
So they’re promoting inbreeding. Makes perfect sense now.
