Should Courtney Upshaw Have Been Suspended For More Than One Quarter For Kicking Vandy Lineman?
As an initial matter, I understand that Coach Nick Saban is our beloved Nicktator, Dark Lord of the University of Alabama Crimson Tide. When he speaks, so it shall be written, so it shall be done. This is a given.
However, I have read much discussion on this board as to whether or not lining up to kick that long field goal against Ole Miss was the right decision, and I've read many here opine that our mercenary overlord was wrong in that decision.
That being said, I ask this question that has certainly been asked many times already on this and other boards: should Courtney Upshaw have been suspended for more than just one quarter for kicking that Vandy lineman (whose name seems to elude me at the moment)?
www.youtube.com/watch?v=fna0ojGfSpM
“Courtney did a good job, played a really great game,” Saban said. “We have rules and things associated with our program. Courtney has been a great ambassador for the program at the University of Alabama. For tornado relief and raising money, he did a great job. He made a poor judgment. It’s just part of what we decided to do to not start him in this game.”

In answer to my own question...
I say yes, he should have been suspended for more than one quarter.
I know this is an exceptionally unrealistic black-and-white viewpoint, but he either did something wrong or he didn’t. If it was an accident, then don’t suspend him at all. Saban’s comments would seem to indicate this this was not an accident. If it was an unprovoked attack, then pull him from the game immediately (if noticed) and issue a real suspension, I would think the next game at a minimum. If it was in retaliation for previous aggression on the part of the Vandy player (does anyone actually know who this was?), then a short suspension might be warranted, but did CNS have such information?
So, a few questions from me: (1) What is this Vandy player’s name? The interwebz indicate that this guy’s father may have publicly commented on this as-of-yet anonymous Commodore’s behavioral issues. (2) Did Upshaw return to the Vanderbilt game after the kick?
With the apparently blatant nature of the kick (I haven’t ever actually seen it, including the link I posted above), and with some of the issues in Upshaw’s past (and yes, I understand that these charges were all dismissed, and I’m all for innocent until proven guilty in a court of law, but I think we would all agree that although one has a right to be legally presumed innocent in court, one has no similar right to represent the University of Alabama on the football field), I would certainly think that more was called for here than a one-quarter suspension in the Ole Miss game.
Thirteen.
my answer is that is penalty was fair
he got cut blocked, and in a moment of frustration he kicked at a guy. It was a moment of poor sportsmanship, and it was not caught by the officials. While we caught it here, I don’t think many people did, which is why so many were mystified by his quarter suspension. I credit the coaches, who obviously caught it on film and addressed the matter accordingly. To answer your (2) question, Courtney did not miss any time during the Vandy game for his transgression from what I recall.
In his defense I would submit that that cut blocking, while legal, is a dangerous play. For a guy like Courtney, with future millions on the line, I can understand why he would react in the manner that he did. That said, it does not make his reaction acceptable. The bottom line is that its a legal play (I wish it wasn’t), and that there is a proper technique to combat it. So in my mind, he kicked a guy that was doing what he was coached to do.
Retribution for any perceived attack or dangerous play has consequences. In this particular case, it cost him a quarter. Considering that the play didn’t result in injury, and didn’t ultimately appear that they was any serious intent to hurt, I think what was dished out was apporiate. To me, the kick wasn’t very hard, was in the heat of the moment, and frankly was a brain fart. Lets hope he learned his lesson.

Regardless, he still made the motion. As for the punishment fitting the crime, I’ll trust Nick Saban’s judgement. It’s not like he has a history of letting stuff slide.

We’ve been friends 20+ years now. When he started planning all this, I told him I wouldn’t attend the wedding if it was on a Saturday – so they picked Nov 4th. He works shift work so the bye week next week was out of question for bachelor party. At beginning of season, Vandy looked like the obvious game for me to miss, not Ole Miss.

at first i was pretty irked to see this
but i did note upshaw was going out of his way to be cordial to the vandy players after plays were over later in the game. which doesn’t change the severity of his transgression – it was just good to see he didn’t let his emotions stay in control of him the rest of the game.
but franklin seems to be coaching his players to play rough to the point of breaking the rules. georgia’s todd grantham may have been way out of line after the game last week but i’m pretty sure he wasn’t pissed for no reason. and the suspensions handed down on the vandy players by the conference bears this out.
i haven’t re-watched the bama vs vandy game closely but i’ll bet they were doing the same type of stuff in the scrum against us. and, after awhile, you get someone to react. that’s the point of the strategy. that someone was upshaw. and the bottom line is you can’t allow it to happen. weaker teams seek any advantage and this is one they will use.
right now franklin’s “turn around” of the vandy program is the feel-good story of the season. every sportswriter in america is falling over themselves to snuggle up to his three piece set in order to write about how this plucky team with brains is flustering the football factories. in a year or two, as these incidents multiply, you’ll see the mood shift and people recognizing the situation for what it is.
Remember the Rose Bowl: The Story of the Alabama Crimson Tide & the Grandaddy of Them All
I have been...
…thinking the same things. I do admire Franklin’s resolve to build a competitive program, but my least favorite aspect of the game of football is the tendency of certain teams/players to take shots like this that can end someone’s season, career, and/or ability to walk. If/when someone gets injured from one of these plays, Vandy will learn that there can be such a thing as bad publicity.

I thought it was bad when I saw it live,
but after I watched it again just now, I’d say the punishment was more than enough. That was hardly anything. The guy’s body was in contact with his leg before he even moved it, which means it can’t be a kick.
The dude blocked him low and stayed on his legs. Upshaw pushed him (albeit aggresively) away with his leg.
Not that big of a deal.

His palm sweat would annihilate the ball before he ever got a chance to drop it
My initial thought during the game
…was that he needed to be suspended for the whole game against New Miss. But now that we have information that the blockers were being less than ethical… What he did was wrong. In the heat of battle, we’ve all probably did or said things that are not our normal way to handle them, but we still ‘pay the price’ for that screw up (most of the time). So maybe the first half would have been a better compromise, IMO.

Since this was handled internally
a lot of the severity of the punishment could stem from Upshaw’s response when the coaches brought this up to him. Usually punishment is lessened when someone owns up and takes full responsibility for their actions. If he immediately took responsibility and recognized that he was wrong and lost his cool for a brief moment, then Saban probably took that into account. If he would have started whining and saying he didn’t see the big deal, it could have been much more severe. That’s just my opinion. Lots of stuff we don’t know about.
The object of war is not to die for your country but to make the other bastard die for his. ~General George S. Patton~
Exactly
After watching the video, it seems the “kick” was much more defensive than aggressive. It still shouldn’t have been done, and CNS probably decided punishment was in order. Not so much of a punishment for the act, but as a punishment to teach a lesson. You pull something even closely resembling that in Jordan Hare, you will likely draw a flag AND be ejected.
I trust whatever punishment CNS gave him. Discipline is the cornerstone of The Process. It’s not in CNS’s best interest, or philosophy to “let things slide.”

Wish i had tivo'd it
But about two series before, a Vandy player barely missed Upshaw’s knee. He came in from out of frame so i don’t know if it was intentional or he was pushed. I do think Upshaw probably thought it was intentional and when it happened again, he decided to send a message.
The UGA/Vandy game kinda reinforced my thoughts on the direction that Franklin is taking that team.

matters like this are typically handled in house..
I.E. running sprints after practice, up downs till you puke, running stadiums or any type of cardio related torture. Had it been a full blow kick or punch Im sure it would have been worse. The fact he got any suspension at all is impressive to me.
Compare this to UF players throwing blows in our game. I don’t follow the UF program but i didn’t hear of any suspensions from that. Guys are failing drug tests at LSU and are getting just one game…One quarter seems more than enough for what Upshaw did..
