How many NCAA championships does the University of Alabama have? 13? Wrong, try again. The 7 or 8 everyone agrees we won? Wrong. As the NCAA recognized no football champion in Division 1, The University of Alabama has 5 NCAA team titles and they all come from one sport, one program and one woman.
Sarah Patterson once again lead Alabama to the promised land, beating the defending national champions UCLA and leaving media favorite Florida, in the dust. The Gymnastics team will have the honor of being marched out and presented with National Championship rings by Mal Moore at halftime today. The NCAA title has proven elusive to Bama as the proud program recently underwent a few down years. Even this year was expect by many to be a rebuilding year as one competing senior and one competeing junior led a sophomore and freshmen laden team to a magnificent season.
The season feature the lows of having to overcome an early set back in Arkansas (equivalent of a 3 TD halftime comeback) and being throttled in Gainesville (think like 53-7 in football).... and highs such as winning their 103rd straight victory over Auburn, beating Georgia's season high in Athens and knocking the Gator's out of an SEC title everyone said was Orange and Blue all year.
With any luck next year, the Gym Tide will repeat and maybe we'll even be able to honor another group of girls that've been knocking on the title door for the past decade. Bama Softball.
On a related note" I asked one of my buddies when he's thinks Anthony Grant's gonna win us a National Title in Basketball. He said, "I don't know, but he'll probably do it playing in Coleman-Patterson Coliseum."
Here's a recap of the season
Anyone going to the game, make sure to give our girls a rousing reception! Roll Tide!
