Double Tackle Formation vs. Tennessee
Volunteers vs Crimson Tide coverage
Watching the Alabama-Tennessee game again, I noticed an interesting formation in the third quarter (maybe they did it earlier, I don't recall).
You may remember the drive. It was 20-6 and Eddie Lacy had 2 good back-to-back runs.
Formation:
Darius Hanks split out, off the line
Brad Smelley in the slot
Michael Williams on the end
Chance Warmack LG
William Vlachos at Center
Alfred McCullough RG
DJ Fluker RT
Barrett Jones at end
Marquis Maze split out, on the line
Photo
Basically, it's moving Barrett Jones from LT to the other side of RT and they ran it down the Vols' throat.
In this formation, Lacy ran for 13 yards and then 16 followed by Trent Richardson for 16 to the 3 yd line.
Next play got them to the 1 but Vlachos was caught holding and pushed them back to the 13.
The next play was back to a normal formation but it was awesome to see the Tide just run at will.
(Trent scored two plays later).

good eye
At the end of the season we should go back and see how often we go with an unbalanced line, its been a silent staple of the run game over the past few years but never really gets talked about.

these unorthodox lineups
are often used on defense as well.

If you'll notice
when we go wholesale on movement before the snap (1 or 2 TE’s/TE – H-back) is usually when we slip an unbalanced look in there, too. Personnel groupings are key in those situations.

have been asking about this
and i started to think nobody noticed it. thanks for posting it! is this a tackle eligible formation or just barrett jones lined up at tight end?
i think saban is setting something up here to keep in his pocket for LSU. we didn’t really NEED to dig that deep into the playbook at this point in the game, and saban (and/or JM) is pretty clever when he needs to be. i think this gives LSU one more thing to look at and can be used in two other ways:
A. jones breaks off of his block and is wide open in the end zone.
B. either smelly or williams break left and head for the corner of the end zone a la the old “oh shit screen”
i really like the look of this formation, using it the way we did or setting it up then duping the D into giving up a big play. smart.
He wouldn't be eligible if Maze was on the line.
If Maze was off the line, he would have to go to the ref to declare himself eligible, but according to the post he was covered up by Maze.
ah, missed the part where maze was on the line...
and i guess having to report to the ref that you are eligible is a bit of a giveaway. so this is literally lining both tackles up on the same side. does that mean michael williams was eligible as he was lined up beside left guard or not?
I do think Williams is eligible.
Using 2 TEs this essentially becomes a 7 man line. It can be pretty useful if you don’t rely on it too much.
Jones would have to change his uniform number to be eligible, anyway.
This is perhaps my favorite rule in football.
Rule 7, Section 3, Article 3 (Eligibility To Touch Legal Forward Pass):
c. When the ball is snapped, the following Team A players are eligible:
1. Each lineman who is on the end of his scrimmage line and who is
wearing a number other than 50 through 79.
2. Each back wearing a number other than 50 through 79.

Yep.
College doesn’t have the “reporting eligible” rule like the NFL. And can you blame them? Hell, the SEC refs have a hard enough time figuring out whether people stay in bounds on interceptions; no way they’d remember if 75 was on the end of the line.

Of course, we didn’t have many second downs during the entire third quarter…

Nothing Saban or staff does surprises me anymore.
Half the fun of watching Bama play is seeing the subtle mindf*cks that the coaches come up with.

No, no, no. Saban is conservative and never deviates from the safest, most predictable plan!! Tell everyone you know!

My 11 year old son LOVES to draw up plays...
A couple of days ago he came up with about five plays that I thought were pretty clever. He asked me if he could mail them to Ch. Saban, and I said that that would be fine( I’m his mom, but I thought it was so cute). He knows that there’s a good chance Saban will never see them, and there’s no telling how much mail Coach receives a day, but he wanted to give it a shot. He included a letter that stated, “If these plays are not good ideas and won’t work, let me know and I’ll send them to Ch. Miles”. I got a chuckle out of that! Hey, you never know, be watching for a trick play that involves Brad Smelley, and is called the “Turkey Egg”.

That is all win
Most 11 year olds don’t even know how many men are supposed to be on the field. Awesome.

Thank you for your kind words.
I stand amazed at how well he understands football and pays attention to the details. Sometimes I even have to ask him questions during the game. He’s mine, but I have to say that he’s a pretty good ole boy.

I look forward to seeing the “Turkey Egg”.

For the better part of this decade...
the Patriots have run this type of formation quite a bit (Saban/Belichick connection?). Linebacker Doug Vrabel would line up as TE where Williams is in the picture and the left tackle would swing around to flank the right tackle. They would either run a toss to the strong side or pitch it to Vrabel in the end zone, who would be wide open the vast majority of the time.
I think the key here is to mask this type of offense with a mass substitution (i.e. goal line offense) and hope the defense forgets about the “Left Tackle” as an eligible receiver when they fake a toss sweep to to the opposite side.
Either way, as it has been stated above, I think it gives LSU one more thing to think about, regardless of whether or not they do anything with it.

Whence the Pistol?
It has disappeared from our offense, which is unfortunate.

eh...
we don’t do anything from the Pistol that we don’t do from under center. McElwain himself said he decided to introduce it because he “was bored.”

That offense is actually illegal...
In many states. Like, they will throw your ass in jail for running it.
Sursly though, it is banned all over the east coast.

I think they banned the initial A-11 nationwide as far as high school football goes.
The creators of the scheme came back after that and made some adjustments so that it was legal. The new A-11 isn’t as crazy as the old one, but there is still a bunch of funky stuff going on.
Under the old system, a rule that was designed to give a team a better way to punt or kick was used as a loophole to create the A-11. The basic concept was that all players on the field wore an “eligible” number and anyone of them could go out for a pass at any time although only a certain number of players could go out at any ONE time. They also had 2 players in at the same time that would share QB duties.
Want to make sure I understand this right about this formation and receiver eligibility in general
Obviously, you have to have at least 7 men on the line of scrimmage, but only the two outside guys on the line of scrimmage are eligible, correct? That means Jones isn’t eligible because he’s covered up by Maze.
If Maze was off the line, then Jones could have been eligible (if he reported), but either Hanks or Smelley would then have to come up to the line of scrimmage to prevent illegal formation (5 men in the backfield), but that would mean that Williams would have been covered up (no longer an end) and therefore, ineligible, since only the two outside guys on the line are eligible, correct?
And speaking of that, where only the two outside guys on the line are eligible receivers, you could technically put 10 guys on the line of scrimmage (11 minus the QB), but only the two outside receivers would be eligible receivers in that situation as well, correct?
Is everything I just said accurate? (please don’t flame me, just trying to make sure I learned this stuff the right way).
Finally, (not to question CB969, cause I don’t think I’m a real football expert), but is it technically accurate to call Jones an “end” in this setup? Or would it Maze actually be the official end (more accurately, the split end). If so, what would you call Jones in this setup? Another tackle?
Great post CB969.

I just posted this above before I read your comment,
but no, even if Jones was not covered up on his end of the line, he can’t be eligible as long as he is wearing a number from 50-79.
by Orlando McCain on Oct 27, 2011 6:13 PM CDT up reply actions
When did this rule go into effect?
Andre Smith wore 71. When he caught the pass in the Independence Bowl, it was behind the line of scrimmage and considered a “rush”. Why?
You had me at "ROLL TIDE"!!!
Anyone from 50-79
Cannot catch a forward pass. However anyone can catch a lateral and essentially run the ball. A pass like Andre caught is no different than a toss sweep. Hopefully that answers your question.
