LSU vs. Bama: Stat comparison against common opponents

LSU and Alabama have played two common opponents, Tennessee and Florida.  Below is a chart showing combined statistics of LSU and Bama against these common foes.  Some general observations based upon the games versus the common opponents:

  1. LSU ran the ball more than Bama, but with slightly less success per run.
  2. LSU passed the ball less than Bama, but with better success per pass.  LSU was extremely efficient in the passing game.
  3. LSU holds a slight edge over Bama offensively against common opponents.
  4. LSU had a better kicking game.
  5. LSU was penalized more than Bama. LSU opponents also were penalized more than Bama opponents.
  6. Bama holds an edge over LSU defensively against common opponents.  Bama gave up fewer yards total, fewer yards running, and fewer yards per pass play (completions plus incompletions).
  7. LSU gave up fewer yards total passing, because common opponents threw less often against LSU.
  8. Bama gives up more yards per pass completion.

When looking at LSU and Bama through the prism of common opponents, the upcoming game looks to be an extremely close contest.  Look for LSU to attempt to run the ball, even when success is limited.  They are slightly more run oriented than Bama.  They will attempt to wear down the Bama defense.  They will carefully choose opportunities to pass the ball, and select efficient pass plays.  Look for Bama to mix the run and the pass.  LSU might fare better in a game of field position because of the kicking game and low turnover rate.  Bama, on the other hand, plays a very clean, disciplined game, and is not often penalized.  LSU is penalized more than the average team and could lose field position due to penalties.
