I know a college football player who just recently got red-shirted at a school. His mother died when he was a child, and his father passed away a week before he went to college this year. I know of no extended family who is helping this young man out. I was told today he is not allowed to get a job until football season is over even though he is red-shirted. And since he has been red-shirted he is not getting some kind of allowance that football players who are playing get or it has been dramatically lessened. I think it was to the toon of $500. This is some kind of weekly per diem the football players get... I'm not entirely sure of the whole matter that's why I wanted to ask somebody about it. I found out that he has sold most of his clothes trying to scrap by. His car tag has lapsed, he doesn't have enough money to buy some of the access codes for some of his classes since the scholarship doesn't cover that. And don't miss the fact that his father passed away the week before he went to college... The fellow needs a little help.
He wouldn't be in such a dire situation of he could get a part-time job. I'd like to help his girlfriend send him a care package with some things like t-shirts, socks, snacks, what-nots... you know the kind of stuff parents would send their child when they are in school. But, if we bought this young man some new clothes to wear would this count as an impermissible benefit?
