Personally, I think Alabama is the best college football team in the country and I think it would beat LSU six times out of ten on a neutral field, but that doesn’t matter. You have to go by what happened on the field or else what’s the point of playing the regular season?

LSU 9 – Alabama 6. Ball game.

Here is my e-mail. It was titled: Please Allow Me To Quote A Great Man

"Personally, I think Alabama is the best college football team in the country and I think it would beat LSU six times out of ten on a neutral field."

If that is the truth, then why on earth would you also say "College football needs a Grover Norquist to force every voter in the coaches’ and Harris polls to sign a pledge vowing to adjust their votes and rankings to make sure to never, ever, ever, allow the BCS championship game to 1) be a rematch or 2) allow a team that’s not good enough to win its own conference to have a shot at the national championship."

Should Alabama be penalized because they happened to have LSU on their schedule?

Should Alabama be penalized because it happens to play in a tough conference?

Should other teams be rewarded because they avoid the top team? Because they play (are you listening, Stanford and Virginia Tech?) creampuff schedules?

And don't give me that "go by what happened on the field" crap, either. Shouldn't what happened on the field to Oklahoma, Oklahoma St., Oregon, Stanford, Virginia Tech, Clemson, Arkansas, Boise St. and whomever else (except Houston, for whom nothing of any note has happened on the field) count? Why does it only count if you lose to the #1 team, but it doesn't count if you lose to anybody else? Why do those teams all get do-overs, but Alabama doesn't?

Please explain this. I'm all ears as to why you're ONLY eliminated if you lose to the #1 team, but you're NOT eliminated if you lose to a 5-5 team.

Face it: this is the rare season where you don't need any kind of BCS championship, you don't need a playoff, and you don't need anything else. LSU has won the national championship already.

However, in our wisdom--and it really is wise--we have decreed that the championship will never be truly and finally settled during the regular season. For that reason, somebody has to play LSU. Just tell me a team that is more deserving than Alabama and I'll shut up.
