Surprising Score
I was reading the sports page this morning in the Sunday paper and looked at the box scores. I saw where North Dakota State had defeated Georgia Southern 35-7 in the playoffs. However, this would not be the first time a team had played well against us and then go on to flop against another team, regardless of what year. There could be a variety of circumstances and influences that produced this outcome that I'm unaware of, if any. It surprised me a little, because of course I thought this team would obviously win it all in their division. But hey, it's the slow period. I'll be embarrassed if I'm referring to a different team that played us to 45-21.

Nope, it was the same team.
I was hoping they would win it all, but I know nothing about the other teams. I was surprised to see them get blown out and only score 7 points though.
God bless our Dark Lord.
I watched the game and GSU
played good early but wilted down the strecth. If anything their good showing against us probably hurt them by giving them too much confidence.
I’ll say this. We never did stop their dive play, but NDS sure did.
To be honest I hope we never schedule GSU again and for that matter North Dakota State.
If Auburn was in New Mexico and we never played them I would still hate them and their dumb coach and their cheating players.
Only having 1 out of 4 of our nose tackles available certainly didn't help.
God bless our Dark Lord.
I actually watched the second half of the game.
Just like I told y’all at the time, we didn’t scheme to stop their offense. NDSU was playing a 4-4 “Bear” look with bump-and-run coverage outside and a single high safety. The DTs and ILBs played the dive, the DEs played the QB, the OLBs (and SS/rover, who was essentially playing LB) took the pitch. The CBs had zero run support responsibility. Obviously they changed up a bit from this on 3rd and long, but it’s the right way to play it. We stayed in our base 3-4 with two safeties deep the whole game. Basically, Saban knew that we would win the game with our talent and probably underestimated just how well GaSo executes their offense. Plus, they cut block like crazy- way more than we are used to seeing, and probably much better as well.

It bothered me a little as in a chink in the armor kind of way.
But I remember back in ‘92, Southern Miss played us to 17-10 and La Tech we beat only 13-0. So, a team’s mindset going into a game plays a factor in the outcome probably no matter how much a coach trys to get his team up for it. Thus, this is not always indicative of talent level. This team went on and crushed “unbeatable” Miami. I’m sure Alabama will go full force against lsu with this same determination.
There is a lot to be said...
for a team playing with nothing to lose, as they were against Bama. Obviously the semi-finals of the FCS tournament had them playing a bit more tentatively.
That being said, they had a good run and a good year, but so has NDSU, who I believe have only lost one. They will be playing undefeated Sam Houston St. in the final, which should be a very good game a few days before our big one, and I encourage everyone to watch it.
BTW – I organized a bracket this year for the FCS tourney, and although I could only get 10 people, it’s been a blast, especially on weekends like the past couple when no other games of value are on. ( My bracket is toast now as I had Ga So. winning it all)
