Florida State vs. Notre Dame: Pick 'Em & Open Thread

Our current record in bowl pick 'em as a blog is 8-4 (.750)

8-4 (5-3) 3rd ACC Atlantic

Champs Sports Bowl
Florida Citrus Bowl
Orlando, FL
4:30 pm CST
TV: ESPN

8-4 Independent

The bowl might not be epic and the current teams might not be elite, but at least we're finally getting to a place in bowl season where the names are top notch. Florida State was a sexy early season pick to be in national title contention, but that came to a grinding halt after they dropped three of their first five games. They righted the ship eventually though and won six of their last seven including a win over archrival Florida to finish the regular season. They're fourth in the nation in scoring defense only allowing 15.2 points per contest. Lou Holtz was, of course, touting the virtues of Notre Dame football on TV last night and more or less guaranteed that they'd win, which of course means Florida State should have this in the bag. Florida State is a 3.5 point favorite.

^ This!

I forget which year it was, but after ND beat BAMA in a bowl game (and maybe for the national championship), the Alabama legislature passed a resolution that “forbade” any graduate of ND from ever serving as governor or lt. gov. Hate for ND runs deep.

FSU

To me ND is the Dallas of college. I would rather dance with the devil than see those two win a game in any fashion. Their fans think they just won a big game within a week or so.Truth is they both have been under achieving since the early 90’s. NOT A FACTOR! Besides….I love watching Kelly blow a gasket on the sidelines.

I think you misstyped.
Truth is they both have been under achieving since the early 90’s. NOT A FACTOR!

Maybe you meant the early 2000’s in FSU’s case? Florida State did not lose more than 2 games in a season from 1987 until 2000, inclusive, and finished the season in the AP top 5 each of those years, including two National Championships. They played for the National Championship after the 1993 season (they beat Nebraska), after the 1996 season (they lost to Florida in a rematch), after the 1998 season (they lost to Tennessee), after the 1999 season (they beat Virginia Tech), and after the 2000 season (they lost to Oklahoma).

In the BCS era (since 1998, inclusive), they have played in a bowl game EVERY YEAR, including BCS Bowls after the 1998, 1999, 2000, 2002, 2003, and 2005 seasons.

They won their conference in 1992 (the year they joined), 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2002, 2003, and 2005.

I was worried this could turn out like this. Here in NC I get a good look at how freakin BAD the ACC is right now! Funny…the talk was “when FSU, Miami, get here the football will be strong” well…..I think the ACC sucked all the good out of both teams. The entire conference SUCKS!!! Hell….Duke played most of the schools close this year!!! The ACC and Big East don’t need automatic BCS bids!

It interests me

That the RBR faithful had Notre Dame approximately as likely to win this game as ASU was likely to beat Boise St., i.e., about 1 out of 6. That says more about Bama fans than it does about the teams. This game is near pick ’em in my view and the Boise-ASU game was predictably a blowout.

Eddie Lacy better?

News of the day Running back Eddie Lacy continues to show improvement in his recovery from turf toe. The Crimson Tide’s No. 2 running back is running through all drills during media viewing periods. He had been limited in prior weeks to give his foot the best opportunity to heal for games. After several weeks without a game, and a focus on conditioning and fundamentals, Lacy appears to be the beneficiary of some long needed rest.

They were, but . . .

they were on a downward trend, as the bowls were increasingly focusing on which fanbase would spend the most instead of the best games. As much as I hate the BCS, I don’t think we can blame the BCS for general bad bowls.

We CAN blame the BCS for the screwed-up conference tie-ins that ruin the major bowls. It’s just awful that those crap ACC/Big East teams take away major bowls from actual good teams.

Insight Bowl is a mismatch because SEC is so damn good & Penn State controversy
  1. BCS/Rose Bowl – Wisky
  2. Capital One Bowl should be #2 Mich St but since Bama boot stomped them last year, I don’t think they wanted to go back there. Michigan was #3 but instead they go to the BCS/Sugar Bowl in place of the SEC. THEORY: Passing on #4 Penn State, this bowl falls to #5 Nebraska.
  3. Outback Bowl gets Mich St
  4. Gator Bowl may have passed on #4 Penn State for 6-6 Ohio State
  5. Insight Bowl may have passed on #4 Penn State for 7-5 Iowa
  6. Meineke Car Care Bowl may have passed on #4 Penn State for 6-6 Northwestern
  7. TicketCity Bowl – despite the fourth best record, PSU falls to this bowl
