2011 Home Depot ESPN College Football Awards | Open Thread
We've entered that dead period between the end of the regular season and the start of the bowl season where the only things we have to distract us are the Army-Navy game, the coaching carousel and, of course, the awards shows. The Heisman will be announced on Saturday, but tonight we'll have an opportunity to root for our guys in a couple of other categories on the annual Home Depot ESPN College Football Awards Show. Being ESPN, they're already running taped stuff over on ESPNU, but the live festivities begin here shortly with Palmer and Pollack Live from the Red Carpet (I know, right?) at 6:00pm CST and the "official" Red Carpet Special at 7:00 before switching over to ESPN proper at 8:00pm CST for the actual awards. The awards our players are up for are:
Chuck Bednarik Award (College Defensive Player of the Year)
Presenter: Matt Millen - Penn State, ESPN College Football Analyst
Finalists: Dont'a Hightower (Alabama), Tyrann Mathieu (LSU), Devon Still (Penn State)Maxwell Award (College Player of the Year)
Presenter: Herschel Walker - Georgia, 1982 Winner
Finalists: Andrew Luck (Stanford), Kellen Moore (Boise State), Trent Richardson (Alabama)Outland Trophy (Nation's Most Outstanding Interior Lineman)
Presenter: Mark May - Pitt, 1980 Winner
Finalists: David DeCastro (Stanford), Barrett Jones (Alabama), Devon Still (Penn State)Jim Thorpe Award (Nation's Most Outstanding Defensive Back)
Presenter: Governor Bill Anoatubby, Tribal Leader of the Chickasaw Nation
Finalists: David Amerson (NC State), Mark Barron (Alabama), Morris Claiborne (LSU)Doak Walker Award (Nation's Most Outstanding Running Back)
Presenter: Calvin Hill - Yale, Recipient of the 2008 Doak Walker Legends Award
Finalists: Montee Ball (Wisconsin), LaMichael James (Oregon), Trent Richardson (Alabama)
In addition to the individual player awards the show will feature the presentation of the NCFAA Contribution to College Football Award, The Home Depot Coach of the Year Award, The Allstate AFCA Good Works Team, the Disney Spirit Award (which will be accepted on Alabama's behalf by Carson Tinker), and the Walter Camp All-America Team. Chime in here with all your thoughts on all the festivities.
If nothing else Trent got to meet Jasmine from Aladdin, so he has that going for him, which is nice.

Trent ain't going to win the Heistman, but
I’d think he is a shoe in for the Doak.
By the way, I like Doak better than Heisman anyway. Heisman coached at Auburn and Ga Tech. Why would care about such a bozo? Doak Walker died from a snow skiing accident while in his 70’s. Now that is a man.
If Auburn was in New Mexico and we never played them I would still hate them and their dumb coach and their cheating players.
I'm expecting a lot of people to just be stats nerds and go will Ball
but I think Trent should win
Fumbles. It was always Fumbles
How in the Hell can
Mathieu win or at least be in the running for the “best defensive player” yet not be up for the best DB award? oh right…thats cause he is TOTALLY overrated as a cover corner and is only skilled at blizting from the weak (blind side) and returning punts..
Follow on twitter @thelyell
I agree
I think he takes advantage of playing in such a talented defense that everyone else has to account for.
Fumbles. It was always Fumbles
Mathieu would be nothing if he played for say Auburn.
Teams would not be punting it much and he would not be able to just run to the ball because of the broken tackles, etc.
If Auburn was in New Mexico and we never played them I would still hate them and their dumb coach and their cheating players.
Friends, its truly a sad day

Dead Wrong
I’ve seen Luck play in person the past three years in the Cal vs Furd game, and countless times on tv. He will be a stud in the NFL. Joey Harrison played in a system offense. At Stanfurd Luck is the system.

RG3 was one of the best oral communicators I’ve seen & heard from a student-athlete in a long, long time. I’d expect that since both of his parents are/were? Sgt.‘s in the Army. Very disciplined. without the roids, these guys aren’t going do stuff like Bonds, Mcgwire and Sosa did, instead they are going to start to naturally fall apart at 35 and 36.
Which Pujols started doing last yr, let MLB in dbl plays.

true
but, I think its an award with pretty solid integrity, unlike the heisman, which has a very checkered past.
Well, the truth is RBs rarely win the Heistman.
It usually goes to a qb and will this year.
If Auburn was in New Mexico and we never played them I would still hate them and their dumb coach and their cheating players.
Historically...
43 or 44 of the 76 Heisman trophies have been awarded to running backs (in 1944, Ohio State’s Les Horvath was a Quarterback and a Halfback), including 12 straight from 1972 to 1983 (inclusive).
However, that has changed recently, with 9 of the last 11 going to quarterbacks.
Note that I am counting Reggie Bush’s Heisman, but it officially doesn’t count.
Thirteen.
In amplification...
27 or 28 quarterbacks (see the above note about Les Horvath) have won the Heisman, including 9 of the last 11.
Thirteen.
You are correct.
It once was a RB award, but now it is a QB award. I was talking about the here and now.
If Auburn was in New Mexico and we never played them I would still hate them and their dumb coach and their cheating players.

Bowls were not designed to be for . . .
. . . small schools that bring less than 8 thousand fans to a bowl city. The Sugar Bowl only did what bowls do. Produce a game that celebrates college football with the largest crowd possible. Boise can’t do that.
true, but not entirely true
its sort of a myth that Boise doesn’t travel. They do, they don’t travel as well as Va Tech will, but they do travel.
Boise State's average HOME attendance this year was 34,018.
It is interesting to see that they only had 6 home games this year.
The good news is that they officially exceeded capacity in each of those home games. The bad news is that their stadium’s capacity is 33,500.
Thirteen.

a couple of days ago, because i didn’t think he would grade out as a 1st rounder. I have been wrong before, this may be one of those times. He has a degree, hell probably finishes his masters this year. If we win in New Orlean’s, what does he have left here?
Although he could be a first-rounder...

this shit on twitter about richt to A&M can't be real?
why on earth would he decide to play in a division with Alabama and LSU, when Florida and Tennessee are both completely in the crapper; so much so that South Carolina is his toughest competition.
Something about not liking the new AD
although that new AD said the rumors are false so….. who knows
Fumbles. It was always Fumbles
Yeah, I don't believe this...
unless Richt is just sick and tired of all the “he’s made our program more relevant than it’s been since Herschel left, but he can’t win it all so let’s fire him” talk.
Granted the guy has had better talent than most other coaches, but still.
Thirteen.
Nevermind...
maybe I should have checked the main page before indicating that I didn’t believe it.
Thirteen.
Apparently
one of Herschel Walker’s other personalities was reading off the teleprompter.
ott. come on

Probably a good thing my ESPNU doesn't work right now.

I was hoping to be able to catch some of our guys
and their interviews, but most of it was scrambled noise. Anyway, yet again proud of how all of them represented us, both in victory and defeat.
