Why I Support Tide for Toomers

Well written as always, Kleph.
But this
By clearly citing his loyalty to the Crimson Tide as not just the motivation but also the justification for his act he purported to represent me when he poured the herbicide on those trees. So as an Alabama fan I feel an obligation to help clean it up.
is precisely what I take issue with. I don’t care what that fool claimed to represent. He didn’t represent me in the least.

I would agree, but...
It doesn’t really matter that you don’t claim him. His likeness and voice is plastered everywhere with him wearing Bama gear and saying “Roll Damn Tide.” If you somehow think this has gone unnoticed, that’s quite a rock you’re living under.
So whether you WANT him to represent you as a fan of the University of Alabama is entirely beside the point. I certainly don’t want him to represent me either, but that’s not realistic. He does, in the eyes of, well, pretty much the whole country.
Say I’ve got a neighbor who I think is just the worst human being on the planet, and we all rip the guy regularly for his ridiculous displays of love for Auburn. One day, a friend of mine goes to my neighbor’s trailer and takes a baseball bat to the guy’s beloved ceramic gnome statue of Gene Chizik and says “That’s for PNG.” The next day, when the neighbor confronts me about it, what should my response be? Even though I have zero responsibility for what the friend did, and don’t accept any, he claimed to act on my behalf and destroyed the guy’s property. My response is that I’m going to apologize for what happened, and try to help him replace his gnome. And of course, I will continue to make jokes about his Chizik gnome and everything it represents.
That’s basically how I see it.
exactly
No, we are not responsible for what happened. But if we want to show that Alabama fans do have class and that we aren’t just like this guy, it is up to us to make it happen, not just by sitting back and saying “well I didn’t do it…” but by doing something to actually improve the situation in some small way.

While I still disagree with the premise
I think this is the most compelling argument for the Tide for Toomers program.
Everything else seems like a guilt trip to me.
See, I just don't buy that logic.
I don’t need to pay money to prove that “Bama fans do have class.” The truth is that there are some who do and some who don’t. Anybody can decide to be a fan of any program at any time, and my perception of someone’s “class” is never defined by which football team they favor. Anyone who would think less of the millions who love the Tide because of this piece of shit’s actions are is irrational to begin with. Forgive me if I’m not interested in handing my money over to earn their approval.

I agree with that, but
I just get joy out of the fact that it probably pisses him off that (allegedly “fellow”) Bama fans are donating money to try to help undo what he has done.
How much longer till kickoff?
I like what you said! We can't let this guy ruin it for any of us.

Well stated
A cogent and concise article that represents my feelings exactly. Thanks.
How many of you,
who donated to “Tide for Toomers” donated to this family also?
I’m sure there are a million reasons why the two incidents are so different, but in the end an Alabama fan took the life of an LSU fan, just like an Alabama fan killed Auburn’s trees.
As you say,
there are a million reasons why the two incidents are so different.
My question is.
They have raised 28K for this. Will the money be in limbo till they find out what full damage has been done to the tree’s?And if the tree’s do survive, where does that money go?

Priorities
Hope this outrage over a few ceremonious trees by so many that vehemently denounce environmental concerns has them re-evaluate their position. If you’re for the kind of deregulation that destroys the ecosystem and still whine about a few trees because of their football connection, I say “f” you.

And no oversight works even more wonders.
Love the reducing of issues to stock cliche like “government oversight” that several hundred things could be lumped into. Do you like clean water? How about food that doesn’t make you sick? Consistent medications? Not having Polio? How did you like that housing crisis better regulation could have helped, or the resulting oversight that kept us from another great depression? That oil in the Gulf really isn’t a big deal either is it?

Yeah, that would be a big jump
Truth is, I don’t really care that much about rain forests either. I just think it’s crazy how a state that generally shows so little regard for the environment is up in arms about a few trees because they’re tied in with a football tradition. It allows me an unsympathetic distance on this one.

Very well written and exuding the class that characterizes the vast majority of the Alabama fanbase.
Well Kleph, are you changing your attitude towrard your RBR brethen yet?

or another schools property. Yeah, the nut job went too far. But I don’t feel sorry for you or your fans in the least. You reap what you sow. Hope you learned your lesson.
Wow I just find it
amazing that there is so much division over this issue and I wonder how long a random act of violence will continue to grab all the headlines.
For those who give…good for you. You can pick your good person button up.
But I have to say I fall in the bad person group because I can not find any logic in giving money to this and as talented a writter as Kelph is, he has not changed my mind.
But, where does this end? The next time a crazed Alabama fan does a terrible act, and there are many worse things that could be done, do we show up with money again?
By the way, based on the publicity this nut has gotten, I predict another more nut person will arise and do even worse.
And I don’t bujy he did this out of revenge for losing to AU. He did it for the fame and we are sure helping him out.
If Auburn was in New Mexico and we never played them I would still hate them and their dumb coach and their cheating players.
Did it for the fame?...
Well if he did it for the fame I’m sure he’s going to be surprised at just how much jail time he’ll be spending for his 15 minutes of it.

Giving or not giving has nothing to do with being "good" or "bad".
I don’t think anyone from either fan base would be upset at someone for not donating. It’s all the outcry against the idea of taking up donations that leaves the bad taste.
That's where I'm at.
And can’t quite understand the accusation of self-righteousness against those that donate. It’s not like they’re running around slamming people who don’t donate. But instead there are fans slamming those that do donate. The whole thing’s a new one on me: righteous indignation toward people giving their own money to a cause of their choosing.
Actually...
It’s not like they’re running around slamming people who don’t donate.
Kleph himself was on Twitter telling people who didn’t support Tide for Toomer’s to unfollow him because he was going to block them anyway. Furthermore, the reason people are saying that those who support it are acting self-righteous is because a majority of the ones who do support it have made comments alluding to how immoral, or out of touch anyone who doesn’t support it is.

Kleph himself was on Twitter telling people who didn’t support Tide for Toomer’s to unfollow him because he was going to block them anyway.
I see two Kleph tweets about unfollowing and they aren’t as you say. But maybe I missed it.
I haven’t witnessed the majority of supporters behaving this way, but when I scanned back through this thread, I did see more self-righteousness from the supporters than I did before, including my own. I’ll give you that.
This is the specific tweet I was referring to,
i support @TideForToomers if you follow me and feel it’s meaningless & misguided, please unfollow and save me the trouble of blocking you.
And I appreciate your honesty about the self-righteousness. It’s actually less so in this thread in comparison with some of the original threads. I just think it’s crazy how much people have let the actions of one individual divide fan bases, and that’s no more one side’s fault than the other’s, for the record.

It's just all so ridiculous.
Some nut vandalized some damn trees, so we raise $20k+? Come on. If a tornado came through Lee County and damaged some homes or the school then fine. These are trees. Trees that morons throw toilet paper into. Just damn.
'There are two pains in life. There is the pain of discipline and the pain of disappointment. If you can handle the pain of discipline, then you'll never have to deal with the pain of disappointment,'- Nick Saban
Why give to people with damaged homes?
I mean, they still have shelter, right? We should only give to the completely homeless. No wait, that won’t work: U.S.A homeless people have available shleters. Give to the homeless only if they’re kids are in the streets with flies on their faces. No, wait, that won’t work: some of those people could have homes and food if they’d just slaughter their sacred cows…
It’s nice to give to people who are hurting. Not to open up a ridiculous can of worms, but this was the same accusation thrown at Jesus for letting that one lady perfume his feet and Judas was all like “we should sell that & give the money to the poor.” But it wasn’t any of Judas’s business to whom and for what reason she was giving up her best perfume or whatever.
The point is – and I swear I’ll stab out my eyes with a pencil if I just started a religious debate on top of everything else – the impulse to give isn’t governed by some Worthiness Calculator. If you don’t like the cause, don’t give. Wait for the tornado. In the meantime, it is alright for some Tide fans to raise money to some asswipe-draping tree lovers in Lee County just cuz we wanna. Look, 90% of American life, including football, is unnecessary. It isn’t necessary to donate to their lost trees. It’s a nice thing to do, though, no matter how silly some of the boogs are being about it.
I would argue
that there is no real “cause” here other than the desire for some to separate themselves in their own minds from Updyke. The damn trees aren’t even dead yet.
'There are two pains in life. There is the pain of discipline and the pain of disappointment. If you can handle the pain of discipline, then you'll never have to deal with the pain of disappointment,'- Nick Saban
It's likely that lots of us are doing it to separate ourselves in our own minds from Updyke.
But not all of us. And even in those of us affected by that, it’s not 100% that.
Look in all honesty, I had all of these impulses somewhere along the way:
1. I hope people don’t think I’m like that.
2. I hope Auburn freaks don’t come destroy something of ours.
3. I hope this doesn’t end in alcohol and gunfire.
4. I hate that Auburn lost their Toomer’s Trees (I used to live there. It’s a big deal and not completely dumb.)
5. I hope recruits don’t think less of us.
6. Bama fans would look class if they helped out.
7. I would be a cooler fan if I did this. Yay me.
Okay, so only one of those registers in the green on any Ethics Machine, or whatever, but I want to feed that one and choke the others. (I know, that sounds full-of-shit, but…)
And when I read some of the comments from Aubs who seemed genuinely glad about Tide for Toomers, that decent part grew a little.
Alright, so I’m compartmentalizing it in a way that won’t really shake out that clean. But you know what I mean. There’s something decent in the idea, even if it’s diluted by bullshit.
As for the “trees aren’t even dead yet,” that’s really a sound argument. I think most of us decided early on based on articles that they’d never make it. But if they do, that’s gonna be goofy on us. But there was a limited window of time to act and have the gesture mean as much as it could, when the damage was most felt.
Even if they do survive,
it’s going to take a lot of work (cost) to save them.
How much longer till kickoff?
Still not a "cause" in my book.
Didn’t I read that the trees were dying anyway… due to the process used to clear out the TP?
'There are two pains in life. There is the pain of discipline and the pain of disappointment. If you can handle the pain of discipline, then you'll never have to deal with the pain of disappointment,'- Nick Saban
Maybe but what they're going to have to do now
to dig out and replace all of the soil is going to be significantly more involved than what they would have had to do otherwise.
J, I’m not criticizing you if you don’t want to donate. That’s OK. I’m just asking people not to denigrate those that choose to do so.
How much longer till kickoff?
I wouldn't say that I'm criticizing anyone either.
I just hate to see this trumpeted as worthwhile when it isn’t.

They use to go out and throw butt paper all over those trees
and now – Roll Tide.
This entire ordeal has been worse than going to a redneck funeral with a bunch of drunks.
Wish I owned some trees worth 28k.
I also think that this Tide for Toomers is a good idea.
I agree totally with what some have posted up above. Whether we like it or not the media, and a lot of people in general aren’t looking at this as “Look at what this one person, who just happens to also like the Crimson Tide did.” It’s being sent out with the point of view at “Look at what they’ll do, how low they’ll stoop.”
We all know that’s not true and that this was one person that did it. Every team out there has those nuts you wished weren’t apart of your fanbase. A few nut cases or bad fans in general can ruin the reputation of all the fans.
When I went to work the day after this came out all of the Alabama fans there who I have never heard say a good word about Auburn were telling the Auburn fans they were truly sorry that someone associated with us did this. In response they told all of us that they knew it wasn’t representing all of us but thanked us for letting them know we felt the same way they did.
Finally this is a donation..no one is making you give them any money. I wouldn’t be surprised in the least if the University itself made some sort of donation once Auburn figures out what exactly they are going to try to do with the trees.
I was in a sports bar in Virginia last night watching our b'ball game.
After the game was over, a rerun of our gymnastics meet with AU came on. I overheard the people at the table behind me start talking about the trees, and then I heard a couple of them say things like “screw you, Bama” and “go Auburn”. I turned around and told them that I was a Bama grad and that we were as upset as anyone about what happened. But unfortunately I can’t be there every time that conversation plays out in a sports bar in this country.
How much longer till kickoff?
Just a small thought...
…and if they don’t know about this drive then what is to stop another conversation from going as it did in that bar?

At least there’s some possibility that some people will be aware. By your theory, it was wasted effort for me to say anything to them, since there are other people who weren’t there to hear our conversation.

Don't you know that what you did is worthless and meaningless?
You should have just let them know they could go screw themselves because, hey, you didn’t poison the trees.

Have to agree to disagree
With all due respect to those that have given or will give and hats off to Kleph for his gracious sportsmanship. While I do not and never will applaud such egregious actions by any one fan from either fanbase, the ideas that I heard this week that the UofA should give money to the tree cause is absurd. While it might show class and hopefully prevent further retaliation from either side, no one else from the Bama Nation is responsible for what this idiot did. He, and only he should have to pay for his sins—-if he is indeed convicted of this—more on that later.
Should we point any fingers for the scoring marks left at walk of champions sod as AU fans or perhaps one of our own trying to stir the pot? Did we ask for any restitution or have our kids take up money in our neighborhoods like they did on this Saturday in mine? Kid you not. This coming from the same neighbors that taunt me with their rolling their trees that stay saturated for weeks and place their sign “Toomers North” after an AU win. Have we been bitch slapped by the boogers way too long. This 13 yeard old girlie prack/act has reached a fervor pitch.
Have heard for years that AU themselves have been killing the oaks with the pressure washing soaking they must go thru just to clean up the crap that had been left behind. B/C you see, the AU officials recognize how unsightly this leaves the corner.. This does not make the action taken this past January as being okay, “they were going to die anyway” attitude does not replace the act. Explain the hypocrisy when a tree lover being upset by the damage and perhaps ultimate death of the oaks says absolutely nothing about the waste of tp—-paper being tossed into the tress by the dozens after these wins? Might just turn out to be an eco lover freaks dream afterall to show them how stupid this 60 yr old tradition has been. Wishful thinking I know.
Now on to Mr. Harvey, if and only if he were to cave in and sign an admission slip, there is a chance that he might not be convicted. Oh I know they have the evidence of him making phone calls to PFRS and to the AU professors. But they will have to prove with a reasonable doubt that he was there—-is there a camera shot showing him doing the act, any “gun powder” residue on his hands—after all it was well over a month before they actually took him in? Right now all I have heard is what a fool he is for calling into Finebaum and that he says Roll Damn Tide as he signs off. Have not heard any news stories relating to this so I might be writing out of turn here.
God save this rivalry and Roll Tide!!
While it might show class and hopefully prevent further retaliation from either side,
Those sound like pretty good goals to me. No, we’re not responsible for it. i.e. we don’t HAVE to help. But it will make the situation better if we do.
How much longer till kickoff?
A nice, well written letter of sympathy would show more class
than a donation, and you know as well as I do that retaliation is still coming, probably from some lunatic like Updyke.
