Shocking News: Tressel Suspended For 2 Whole Games
In a shocking development Ohio State is suspending Jim Tressel for 2 entire games at the start of this season for playing players he knew would be ineligible. Will the NCAA think this is sufficient punishment? I sure hope not.

How will they beat Akron without him ...
and then Toledo? It will be murderous. Don’t forget the 250k fine, for the man who makes 3.5 mil a year.

Breaking News:
Jim Tressel agrees to contract extension with Ohio State University. Will be paid $3.75 million for 2011 season.
What's the line on that game against the Mighty ZIPs of Akron now?!?
And I didn’t know the Mud Hens had a football team.*
When was OSU’s last major infraction, anyway…?
- no disrespect to either program
With Tressel OSU is a 45 pt. pick
without Tressel OSU is a 45 pt. pick
If Auburn was in New Mexico and we never played them I would still hate them and their dumb coach and their cheating players.

Perhaps someone can help me out here
I realize that these are just OSU’s actions, but gee they seem awfully light given the circumstances. For what its worth, I will give Tressell the benefit of the doubt that he was concerned with confidentiality and potentially tampering with a federal investigation (even though I don’t buy that for a second). That allows me to look past the initial not dealing with it, but where I have a really big problem is when in December, once this was out and the NCAA was making rulings on the players, he should have come forward. The fact that he didn’t, after the FBI had essentially let the cat out of the bag on the investigation anyway, tells me that he deserves absolutely no benefit of the doubt.
Also, since when does a lawyer sending you an email asking for confidentiality entitle said lawyer for that? Afterall, its not as if Tressell is a member of the media that needs to be concerned with burning a source. So what you are telling me is that a lawyer willingly voilated attorney-client privledge, and somehow, thats Tressell’s problem. I don’t think so, given the information, Tressell’s duty isn’t to look at for the ethically challenged attorney, but rather to protect his program. For what its worth, the attorney should be brought before the ethics board of the bar of the State of Ohio in my opinion.
Anyway, I see a bunch of holes in the defense that both Tressell and tOSU is using. I will give them one thing, they did self report this, which I think you have to respect them for. However, given the circumstances, I don’t think the NCAA is going to buy their argument and that this will lead to harsher penalties. Additionally, if I am not mistaken, they had major violations in basketball in 2006, which will place tOSU in the category of repeat offender. I can’t remember (although I could be wrong) any time in which a major infraction occurred in football in which the team in question did not receive a scholarship reduction of any type. Obviously, it could get much harsher than that when you factor in the possibility of the repeat offender window being in play.
If they don't seriously break OSU and UT's balls over their HEAD COACHES lying to the NCAA then what the fuck is the point of the NCAA?

I mean seriously… Once we get off probation and if anything ever comes up, I say fucking cover it up, and do whatever you can to bury the shit. What’s the down side, assuming they let Auburn, UT, and OSU all skate.

I’m gradually coming to this conclusion myself. If I’m Mark Richt right now, I’m screaming bloody murder to anybody that will listen. Mark Richt pre-emptively puts his job status in question by being upfront with the NCAA and costing himself 3 or 4 games due to AJ Green’s suspension and likely getting canned at the end of next year. What’s the incentive to be honest anymore? Guys like Chizik and Tressel at worst will receive a slap on the wrist after the fact by pushing the boundaries of the rules and preventing their 2010 campaigns from being railroaded.

Yes, Richt did the right thing
and it cost him…it could still cost him. The best policy seems to be do nothing, deny, deny, and then spin it if you get caught.

They all skate
Skating is the in thing now with the NCAA. Is your heart breaking now over this 3.5 million a year coach having to cough $250,000, and stay in the dressing room against the first two pancakes. But where is the multiyear scholarship reductions like Bama got, something that makes your team suffer every game during those years. The truth is money has gotten too big from TV to mess with the big boys too much. Money this big wields too much power. This includes Auburn. They skate. I agree I would not admit didly on anything anymore.
Has it really changed that much
Since USC got hit with probation….like a year ago?
Simmer down, fellas,
Read the email transcripts. Tressel is dead-to-rights. OSU will get slammed, and there’s no way around it. The smoking gun actually exists this time. Sit back, pour a drink, and enjoy the fireworks.

I did read them
I don’t get why they are standing by him, if it were my call, I would have fired him on the spot.

The emails do make Tressel look like he obstructed in the investigation.
But, a two-game suspension? If that isn’t at least doubled, then I agree with my angered bretheren — the “fix” is in.

I am wondering, based on the the report of what happened when the vest was asked if he had forwarded the emails to anyone, if he DID inform the AD about what was going in back in April. How much worse would the situation be if Smith (or whatever his name is) also new about this, and they didn’t self-report?
obviously, this is pure speculation on my part.

I
think it was Stewart Mandell that tweeted something to the effect of this incident putting pressure on the NCAA to come down hard because the perception is that the big programs get special treatment. It kinda amazing me a little that people who cover this stuff for a living still have absolutely no clue how the NCAA works. They are a governing body with written policies/procedures/bylaws. They don’t succumb to “pressure” stemming from the public and/or the media 99% of whom haven’t the slightest clue as to how they operate.
"A demagogue is one who preaches doctrines he knows to be untrue to men he knows to be idiots." -H. L. Mencken
I disagree.
The NCAA does have written policies/procedures, but they are not immune to external pressures. Take USC’s recent punishment for example. Did USC deserve to get punished? Absolutely, but the NCAA didn’t have to hit them as hard as they did. I would argue that at least some portion of their heavyhandedness was due to the pressure the NCAA felt from the media scrutiny and public opinion on the matter.
I don’t think that these pressures dictate the NCAA’s every move (aka tin foil types), but I certainly do think that these pressures carry some influence.

If
you read that report though, they took particular issue with the position coach that was directly involved with/had knowledge of Bush getting impermissible benefits and how defiant he was. Also USC’s compliance dept being basically non-existant. My point is that you could make the case that the NCAA punished USC within their rules, and it wasn’t to make an example out of them or due to outside pressure.

Comparison
Could any of you, for a second, imagine ever seeing this quote coming from Nick Saban?
“…quite honestly, I was scared”
The fact that Pryor was involved (The guy who should be leading the team) and now this quote from Tressel, it appears the rot starts at the top.
"Some people have a way with words....some people....not have way." - Steve Martin
Indeed
What a crock of shit. He is a head coach. He knows how compliance is supposed to work, and he knows when he’s supposed to report what he hears.
Proud member of the Fax Girl fan club.
The thing about worrying about confidentiality is bullshit. He could still have kicked the involved players off the team without having to say that he got information about some fbi investigation. He could have suspended them for “team violations” or whatever. He didn’t have to play them. He did. They need to have their asses handed to them, doubly because he lied to the ncaa. The NCAA can’t let multiple head coaches basically get away scott free for lying their faces off.

Tressel
One of the best con men in football….nice conservative sweater vests, quiet guy, always composed it seems….and it seems all the cheating, players taking money, etc…never seems to get his hands dirty.
