RBR Poll: Did Anthony Grant get hosed?
The SEC office released its official 2011 basketball awards yesterday, as voted on by the league coaches. There weren't many surprises when it came to First-Team All-SEC, Second-Team All-SEC and Freshman-Team All-SEC selections. Alabama's JaMychal Green became the first Tide player in three years to be named First-Team All-SEC, while Tony Mitchell was named Second-Team All-SEC and Trevor Releford was named Freshman-Team All-SEC.
There were two minor surprises however in Player of the Year and Coach of the Year selections, which were both swept by the SEC Champion Florida Gators. Florida's Chandler Parsons was chosen over Vanderbilt's John Jenkins for Player of the Year, and Florida's Billy Donovan was chosen over Alabama's Anthony Grant for Coach of the Year. Both selections generated varying degrees of disapproval from Vandy and Bama fans respectively, so tell us what you think about the Coach of the Year voting in the poll below.

Quick!
without looking it up, who was coach of the year last year? Give up? I don’t know, either, and don’t care. It’s nice and all to win COTY, but no one cares.

Really?
I’m dubious on that. I mean, I’m guessing it doesn’t hurt, but not on the list of a recruit or the people who have the recruit’s ear, I’d say style of play, playing opportunity, whether or not I like the coach regardless of the awards, location of the college, proximity to home, tradition of churning out NBA talent, etc. matter much much more.
i'd say so...
particularly for the parents. look at gene chizik. when anyone now asks about all the questions about his program he can say “look, a group of nationally recognized sportswriters said i’m legit so are you going to believe them or unfounded rumors?”
and, bottom line, grand clearly deserves the damned thing.
I think
Winning a national title and having no qualms about paying players helps out Chizik more than a coach of the year award, hell he had a pretty good recruiting class after his first mediocre season.
what i mean is...
the championship might get the player’s attention but the legitimacy – merited or not – of the coaches’ award is more likely to matter to parents. the example is just to highlight the distinction.

I don't follow College Basketball much but....
I think Grant did an outstanding job in coaching the Tide this year. IMO, he created a very quick turnaround relative to last year’s performance. However, Donovan fielded a great team and won what mattered most, the SEC title. So, I took the middle of the road look on this one. Both men were deserving and Donovan brought home the title so he deserves the coach of the year award.
(Disclaimer – I am basing my opinion on Matt Dover’s analysis and the few games I have watched of both the Tide and the Gator’s) (Secretly, I am a UAB Blazers Basketball (only basketball) fan, go Gang Green!)

So by that standard, they should just give COTY to the conference winner each year?

Thank you.
Anyone who has followed college basketball closely for a decade or more should be able to understand why Grant got hosed. COTY is almost always awarded to the Coach who achieved the most relative to expectations at the beginning of the year. I don’t think anyone expected the Tide to go better than 8-8 in conference play, especially after the putrid start to the season.
Donovan was almost unanimously picked to finish first in the SEC, maybe not 13-3, but certainly no worse than 10-6.
It’s stupid that they had to make the wrong choice this year because they made the wrong choice in previous years.

Not that I know him
But I’d guess Coach Grant would rather have a conference title, win the conference tourney, an NCAA appearance, etc. than a stack of COY honors. Heck, he’d probably take a chance to play any of those games in the Paradise Jam over again. Like a poster said above, who remembers who got COY last year anyway?
The Gainsville Times and other publications
made the fact that Donovan hasn’t gotten the award very important leading up the vote. So while I feel like Grant did a better job it became apparent that there was pressure to give Donovan his first.
You can’t be mad that a coach who’s had this much success in the league finally got his first award, after all the man did win the league.

He did make a valid point
about “recruiting is part of a coaches job, don’t penalize him for doing it well.” But last years UK team could have won without running a single play all season.
As far as this year, I think it was as much of a lifetime achievement award as anything. They both had different cases to deserve it, I wish it had gone to Grant, but I have a feeling he’ll get his before his time in Ttown is through.

If they make the wrong choice this year because they made the wrong choice a few years ago
That just means they aren’t good at making the right choice

Most certainly.
Although he may as well clear a spot for it next year; it’ll be between him and Barbee at Auburn and I think Grant has the superior talent next season.

Have to look at the whole body of work
and Alabama basketball at the beginning of the year was terrible.

I think that works in CAG's favor, though.
Donovan took a team that everybody expected to win the SEC, and he won the SEC with them. Nobody expected Alabama to do particularly well and, after that atrocious start, I don’t think you could have found anybody willing to predict us to go 12-4 with wins against UT, UK, and UGA. The midseason turnaround is, in large part, due to coaching and was overlooked.
