Alabama Gymnastics takes on Auburn and Penn State in Tuscaloosa

The Crimson Tide, ranked #2 in the nation, will take on five other teams tonight, April 2nd, in Coleman Coliseum. The meet is a regional in which the top two teams qualify for the National Championships in Cleveland. The Tide has been insanely successful throughout their history with 28 top 1 or 2 finishes earning them a trip to the final show every single year since 1983. This also happens to make the Tide the most consistent post season performer in the sport's collegiate history.

Alabama will be lead by Kayla Hoffman, Geralen Stack-Eaton and a host of freshman and sophomores that have helped Alabama turn what was thought to be a rebuilding year into a strong campaign for another national crown. Back in March, the Tide upended what was thought to be the most dominant team in the country, the Florida Gators, in the SEC Championships. The BJCC Arena in Birmingham became an extension of Coleman Coliseum as the Tide put on their most solid preformance all season.

Qualification can be fickle however. Just last year, five-time defending champion Georgia suffered a meltdown in their regional and failed to qualify for the first time since the 80s. UCLA, the 2010 National Champion failed to qualify just four years earlier. All it takes is one lapse or fall to blow a competition wide open and Alabama's regional features some very dangerous teams.

The No. 22 Auburn Tigers are led by former Utah assistant coach, Jeff Graba and always take it up a notch when the opponent is named Georgia or Alabama. No. 11 Penn State has always been a threat out of the Big 10 and oddly enough, is led by the former Auburn coach, Jeff Thompson. No. 14 Illinois's star is Allison Buckley, the 11th ranked all arounder in the country. Central Michigan and SEC foe Kentucky round out the competition which is set to begin at 6pm.
