Massive Tornado Hits Tuscaloosa

Update: The Birmingham Chapter of the American Red Cross has set up a page to donate to tornado relief.

04/27 Tornado in Tuscaloosa from Crimson Tide Productions on Vimeo.

A series of violent storms have blasted across Alabama over the past 12 hours and a mile wide twister just hit Tuscaloosa causing major destruction. Tuscaloosa Mayor Walt Maddox says there has been at least one fatality and damage is reported across the city.

This storm is now on course to hit Birmingham and hasn't lessened a whit in power. We have a ton of folks following the storms on livestream, twitter, facebook and other sources. This thread is for folks to pass along info, data and good wishes to all our friends and family trying to get through this.

Update: Lots of pics and video going around on Twitter and Facebook, this one shows a pretty good bit of the damage at 15th and McFarland.

that's crimson place

between 15th and DCH just south of the railroad tracks. it’s directly across mcfarland from big lots, hobby lobby, full moon bbq and beside the shell and krispy creme – all of which are now gone.

both my daughter’s lived there 1 year each while in school. one of their roommates still lives there and she, her brother and sister, and cats were in an interior closet and said their whole damn building was shaking.

Having to comment from mobile because the power is out in the dorms. My roommates and I took shelter in Rose Towers. North side of campus looks pretty much untouched. …to stay inside. Take it from someone that’s been through quite a few hurricanes, you need to stay inside as there is a great threat of electrocution from downed power lines. Don’t go out unless you need to.

I’ll take hurricanes over tornadoes like this anyday. I grew up in florida and went through a nice bit of hurricanes. The sheer unpredictable nature of this bad boy was really creepy. I live in mountain brook and was in a dark hole in the ground basically with a few others waiting for it to hit… i could only imagine ACTUALLY being hit by it !

gah hope everyone is okay !

I went out

in one hurricane with some friends .. water was up to our knees … we thought it was all fun and games until we saw a huge sheet of plywood fly over our head….. we then decided that was a good time to go back inside.

then a hurricane a month later hit us again and ( stupidly ) we went to the beach for it . the wind was strong enough where we took palm tree branches ( that had fallen ) and picked them up and were able to lean at easily 45 degrees into the wind ( we were on the edge of a pier) crazy. I was in my younger 20’s so I claim naivety and a big chunk of … Im invincible, to why i did it.

Authorities in Alabama have received unconfirmed reports of at least 12 deaths as a result of severe storms and tornadoes hitting the state, Gov. Robert Bentley said Wednesday evening.
“We don’t know exactly yet how many lives have been lost. Unconfirmed, we have at least 12, and possibly 13,” Bentley told reporters. “But we will continue, obviously, to find out that number, and we will also monitor the injuries that we have across the state and respond to those.”

UPDATED 6:58 p.m. – While no structural damage has been reported on the UA campus, power outages are widespread. Areas of the community where many of our off-campus students live have been impacted. The Student Recreation Center is available to students whose off-campus residences are damaged. Counseling services will also be available. Because of the power outages, Lakeside Dining is the only dining facility open on campus. Lines will be long, so please be patient. Please stay away from community areas that have experienced damage. If you must travel in Tuscaloosa, please be extremely careful. Obey all commands of law enforcement. A Crimson Ride bus will be available to transport students in the impacted areas to the Student Recreation Center. Please call 348-RIDE.

My daugther

was in her sorority house just beside the stadium with about 30 other girls. The tornado passed real close to the stadium, they were terrified but she was safe. For some unknown reason she decided to move back on campus in this her senior year. The house she lived in last year was just off 15th St. It was totally destroyed. No doubt if she had not moved back on campus she would have been riding the storm in that house and I hate to think what would have happened.

I don’t think a tornado could do any more damage. It is a sad day for Tuscaloosa. Pray for those who were unable to escape this storm.

If Auburn was in New Mexico and we never played them I would still hate them and their dumb coach and their cheating players.

Thoughts and prayers from near Huntsville

A pharmacy, gas station, Piggly Wiggly and subdivision 3 miles from my house are gone. At least 2 dead. I am so very lucky. I could cry when I think how lucky my family is.

Lightning struck a house in a subdivision in the opposite direction and it sparked a huge fire.

No one in Madison County has power and the utilities chief said it may be 4-7 days before it’s back.

Much love to y’all. Prayers to everyone.

I was in the middle of a Western European Civilization final and we had to move to a room in the basement of Ten Hoor. Finished the final about the time the warning for an approaching; we rode it out and lost power about 5 mins into the biggest part of the storm. I couldn’t see it but I could hear it. There was a girl in the class who had survived the Enterprise storm and I was trying to help her not go into an anxiety attack.
As soon as it was all over (about 2 hours after class usually ends) we were allowed to leave.

Power is out now so I’m typing this from mobile. Thank you again for all the thoughts and genuine care.

Helluva day here.

I was at my mother-in-laws south of town because the power was out at our house in Northport. We knew it was on the way, but thought it was heading downtown. We were about to head to the interior hallway when my six year old said, “Hey, I see the tornado.” He was completely calm. I expected to see some trees blowing, but when I looked out the window, I was speechless. Never seen anything like it. Black and swirling against an overcast sky and bits of who knows what flying around.

It turns out we were perfectly safe – it was a few miles away. But at the time, I swear it looked like it was 500 yards away and heading right for us. That’s how big this thing was. I was terrified. I told the wife and kid to go back, but I swear I couldn’t leave that window. Stupid, I know, but I thought if I kept looking at it and praying, it would turn. And it did (or maybe it just stayed on its original path, like I said, my perspective was skewed).

Also, I haven’t seen any pictures, but Greensboro Ave. north of Skyland and the street Harry’s is on is only slightly better off than 15th/McFarland.

Tornadoes are the craziest things.

I was living in Northfield, MN during this, which was only an F2. Driving out in the days following, I saw houses where the garage was absolutely destroyed, but the house was untouched. Part of the reason I find tornadoes so frightening is that they can be completely random.

My youngest brother was in the library when the tornado hit.

Due to my phone acting stupid, I couldn’t dial-out to find out if he and most of the rest of the family I have staying up in Tuscaloosa were okay and it was a maddening 20+ hour wait til my phone finally decided to quit being stupid and work. Sent my brother a text and he didn’t answer, called and got voicemail, so I ended up calling my mom who told me he was in the library and was OK and the rest of the family staying up there was fine as well. If it wasn’t for my roommate calming me down, I’d have driven from here in Dothan to T-Town in a heartbeat just to make sure they were alright.

So glad they’re okay, but my thoughts and prayers go out to everyone else and their loved ones that was affected by the storms, so stay strong and keep up the faith. ROLL TIDE!

Awful.

Not much else you can say about it.

My thoughts are with everyone effected.

Anybody know if the Holiday Inn Express on 15th (across from the mall) is still there? That’s where we stayed for A-day. We walked from the hotel all the way down to Hackberry, then turned toward the stadium… pretty much the path of the tornado.

THANK YOU!

To the Roll Bama Roll Team,

THANK YOU for your amazing coverage and updates of yesterday’s horrific events. Your efforts are sincerely appreciated. RBR was the best source of information I found in trying to understand what was happening in Tuscaloosa, while living in Charlotte, NC.

Please continue to update us on how we all can help in the coming days/months. God bless you and everyone in the great state of Alabama.

Thoughts and prayers from Kentucky

I watched the live stream of the tornado as it went through Tuscaloosa and Birmingham with tears in my eyes.

Then it comes to be that the soothing light at the end of your tunnel, is just a freight train coming your way...

Thoughts and Prayers from your friends up north

I wouldn’t give a hoot in hell for a man who lost and laughed.

My thoughts go out to all those affected by this in the South

I consider Tuscaloosa a home despite only studying there shortly. These images break my heart.

If you're traveling in Tuscaloosa:
Stay away from I-359 if you can. It’s a mess. Backed up going both ways.

The city is urging residents to conserve water:
Maddox is also asking those served by the city’s water system to use only what is critically needed since two water towers near the Veterans Administration Hospital and Crescent Ridge Road were knocked out of operation during the storm.

“We need people to use as little as possible,” Maddox said of water use. “We will likely have homes who will lose water very quickly.”

A colleague of mine in Hamburg, Germany...

called me this morning to ensure I was OK. I’m in Mobile and had to explain that I was nowhere near the action, but that just goes to show how far reaching this news has gone.

Thoughts and prayers to all affected.

So where did the tornado first touch down?

All the reports I see are from 15th near McFarland. What about further west? Was downtown OK? Someone mentioned the Harry’s area and Greensboro?

How much longer till kickoff?

where is this?

Rangers finish 85-77, four games behind the A's. Red Sox beat the Braves in the World Series.

Let’s hope I’m wrong.

Glad so many of you in the RBR community are safe and sound

Even as I’m left heartbroken by, well, so much else. Thoughts and prayers to everyone affected both in Tuscaloosa and elsewhere.

If Hollywood wanted to do Tuscaloosa a favor

(After all the people have been rescued/recovered)

They could film a Fallout movie there. From the overhead views it looks like T-Town got nuked.
