The Roll Bama Roll/Well That's Cool Sunshine Express

Does anyone know where we can rent this truck in Los Angeles?
Roll Bama Roll is teaming up with the folks over at Well That's Cool to bring truckload of donations from the West Coast to Tuscaloosa for the tornado relief efforts. Sometime Thursday we're going to load a truck in Los Angeles and start heading east on Interstate 10 and then Interstate 20 picking up items as we go.
We are working in coordination with the good folks at Toomers for Tuscaloosa to arrange the logistics but the backbone of our donation push is being handled by the University of Alabama alumni groups in Southern California, Arizona, North Texas and North Louisiana.
The emphasis of this drive are items that will be needed next week in the storm zone and that sending through the mail isn't really practical. That list includes the following:
- Tarps/Tents
- Cots/Air Mattresses
- Charcoal
- Cookers (BBQ grills, hibachis)
- Hammers
- Adult diapers
- Pedialight
That said, the goal is to fill this truck. So we will take whatever you have to do that. But if we get too much we are going to off-load items that can be mailed and prioritize the above list.
There is a constant demand for consumable items such as toilet paper, feminine hygene products and the kind of stuff you use daily and never think about like, say, paper towels. Foodwise non-perishables like granola bars, canned goods and gatoraid are not a bad idea as well. If someone goes and gets a case of bottled water for us to throw in the back of this beast, we're not going to object.
Now we plan to make a stop for anyone along the way that can collect a decent amount of stuff but the confirmed drop off points are as follows:
California area: Butterfield Square Shopping Center, 28690 Old Town Front Street, Temecula, California. ONE DAY ONLY Wednesday, May 4, 10 a.m. till whenever.
Phoenix, Arizona area: Fastenal, 250 S. Mulberry, Mesa AZ. This will be until Friday, May 6 at 5 p.m.
Dallas area: Lakeside Church of Christ, 1500 Breckinridge Road, Mansfield, Texas. This through Friday. On the weekend the dropoff will be Prescott Realty, 6060 N. Central Expressway, Dallas.
North Louisiana area: Ruston Parks & Recreation Complex, 605 James Street, Ruston, La. Until Monday.
As you might expect, we'll be tweeting and blogging about our progress but this post will be updated as more specific information about the itinerary get's nailed down.

And this couldn’t be a more appropriate quest for them…

Thanks guys! Y’all rock!!
One other thing
Is there a Southern California drop point? They’re mentioned above but then no actual location given…
we are working through the alumni association
for now you can email their coordinator ashli wolf at wolfbama@gmail.com to arrange a drop off.

Thanks again for everything you're doing
My company has offices in Irvine, CA; Scottsdale, AZ; and other various places… both of those offices know how serious I am about all this… so I’m thinking that my people could get something pulled together pretty quickly
Do you happen to know if we have anyone (I may have missed it if we do) coordinating a drop off/pick up in the D.C. or Northern VA area? We have an office up there & I could light those guys on fire

something i want you all to keep in mind. you might notice that in my posts and tweets i always use the plural pronoun. it’s “we” and “us.” that’s not by accident. and it doesn’t mean todd, ots, nico, matt and myself. it means you. all of you.
roll bama roll is what it is because it’s a community. that “we” means all of you that post, comment and lurk. you make this site what it is and that’s who i’m representing when i’m driving down the highway next week.

Headed to T-town ...
My daughter was all set to graduate this coming Saturday but that’s all put on hold for now. She’s been busy volunteering and this Los Angeles boy is headed to T-town on Thursday to pitch in with the relief effort. Two of my brothers from Pensacola are coming to help out too. My uncle’s church, Lake Forest Baptist, was hit and I’ll probably be starting there unless one of y’all know of more immediate needs. What I don’t want is to get there and stand around with a bunch of folks waiting to do something. I WANT TO GO TO WORK! Let me know the L.A. area drop off and I’ll spread the word to all of my friends and my church.
One More Thing ...
I THANK GOD that my little girl is alive (I was on the phone with her during the whole ordeal) and pray for ALL of the families who have suffered the ultimate loss.
I'm glad your daughter is okay!
I was on the phone with my little brother in Tuscaloosa as it was headed right for him. We lost our cell signal and it was not until an hour later that he text me saying he was safe. His house was 3 blocks away from total destruction. Several of my family members in my hometown of Cullman experienced major damage, and many of my friends in Bountsville, which is 5 miles from where I live, are left with nothing but heaping piles of debris. We are all still thanking God though for his hand of protection, but praying for those who are suffering the loss of loved ones. What an extremely overwhelming week this has been.

Thank You!
I also lost contact for a short bit which scared me to death!!! She lives a couple blocks from Bryant Denny and she and her roommate were in their downstairs bathroom with sofa cushions over their heads. The last thing she saw on the TV before the power went was the tornado had entered Tuscaloosa and they announced “headed for the campus.” We were both about as frightened as you could be. I’m so sorry for you family’s and friend’s loss and will keep them and all of the people in my prayers. I also hope that they get help soon from all of the volunteers showing up. RTR!!!
Thank you back!
We are a close family and a close community and have already made great strides in cleaning up. It’s times like these you just have to put your nose to the grindstone and git er done. I hope help is given to those who can’t easily help themselves. You have a safe trip as you head to T-town.

one of our guys in the Scottsdale, AZ office is going to deliver to Mesa on Friday!!
He thanked me for lighting a fire under his butt, I told him I was the one that owed him the thanks… he won’t ever have to buy a drink when he’s in the ATL again either…
This is great. Keep up the good work!
My brother is coming in from Tuscaloosa today. Once he’s rested and recovered a bit, we may head down there and pitch in.

Columbus, MS
Kleph, is there anyway we could set up a pick up in the Columbus area. As you know it’s off 82 on the way to Tuscaloosa. I would be willing to handle some logistic stuff. MSU, and the W, along with churches in the are-I think we could cram the trailer out with a last minute stop before hitting Ttown.
sounds good.
i’ve got zero idea how loaded the thing will be at that time though.

Does southern CA include San Diego
or will you start in LA?
If San Diego I can spread the word with family there.
I wouldn't piss off the boys from Alabama . . . DBT
Anybody have any contacts with the Southern Baptist Convention?
I’m currently in awe of the fact that this is the message they’re sending out to all their local associations (therefore being passed along to their churches):
Sid Hopkins, Gwinnett Metro Baptist Assoc missions director said that the disaster areas are still in the assessment stage. They are still doing search and rescue and will not allow any one in the areas or accept any donations. He is sending me the info he received from the Georgia Baptist Convention Disaster Relief Department.
He wasn’t just referring to GA he was also referring to AL because I was requesting to be able to collect at the church for my delivery to AL on the 14th.
the alabama baptist convention
has been very active in the recovery efforts.

Remember the Rose Bowl: The Story of the Alabama Crimson Tide & the Grandaddy of Them All
That's what I thought
I’m not sure WHY the Georgia Baptist Convention is stonewalling… as it says above, they’re taking nothing but monetary donations. And I stated clearly that I was working with AL locations, not GA (not that I have anything against GA but I’ve got people in AL and I was clear on the fact)
My girlfriend's church back home in Powder Springs, GA
is wanting to send some people to Tuscaloosa to help the clean up. 10 are signed up for Sumaritans Purse for either this Sat. or the next. (FYI, I believe that church is more Crimson than anything else)

A drop point in PHX? Shit man! I'm in PHX!
Kleph, I’ll do as much as I can to get as much shit as I can into my mob-mobile and get the aforementioned “shit” to the Phoenix drop point before D-Day.
Sorry for the question (as you are obviously already bombarded), but is the Phoenix drop point a residence of a Crimson Legionaire, or shall I await the caravan’s arrival on Friday. Also, I’ve always wanted to do the Bruce-Willis-Diehard-2-road-flare-thing in case you guys get lost/abducted by aliens, so in the unlikely event that some wicked shizzy happens, uh… blog it and I shall react appropriately and with aplomb… and possibly road flares.
BTW, “Friday” is taken from the name of the Viking God “Frey,” so act appropriately on that day…

However, I shan’t be letting my people down. I will have plenty of goods ready on D-Day. Also, let me know what special beverage I can bring YOU for your efforts, good sir.
Also, I’ll email Ashli at the Alumni Association and try to get some media outlet reporting into the equation so that generous citizens know that the Snowman/Bama Express (you) is heading into their town.

Cool
I’ve emailed First Baptist and through them suggesting it, I emailed Concord Union who can email a ton of local churches. So we probably have churches covered.
I’m waiting to hear more from the SID at Tech. He owes me since he used to clown me in basketball pretty much our entire childhoods (he was older, in my defense).
As a last resort, I’ve emailed family and friends personally or on Facebook.
Sounds like you have a handle on things. Do you think we’ve covered it all?

Well the last thing you need on this trip is a "driving award"(speeding ticket),
so if you hear “smile and comb your hair” there’s a radar trap ahead or “watch your donkey” means let up and check your rear view for a “bear”(police) is approaching from behind. Just remember “there’s two miles of ditches for every mile of road”(drive safely) and you’ll be fine.

some groups are focusing their efforts on monitary donations
and others have set up effective collection and mailing systems. all of these are doing what is important here – getting help to folks that need it. so just because someone isn’t directly participating in this particular effort doesn’t mean they don’t care or are ignoring the problem.

who are you in touch with there? I’ve already forwarded this on to a couple of people but I don’t want to duplicate efforts and instead contact as many as possible.
Already posted this on Shaggy Bevo for Dallas people.
I ask because you went there I think
and I’m from there. So we may know the same people.
I hit up the SID for LaTech and am gonna hit up my old church.
i went to high school in ruston
and took some classes at la tech. PBCook is handling things there. i’m focused completely on logistics of the trip. and don’t worry about replication, the goal is to reach as many people as possible.

OK folks... here's the rough itenerary
THURSDAY, MAY 5: i’m flying to los angeles in the afternoon and picking up the truck. we’ll load it with the stuff being collected there by the SoCal folks.
FRIDAY, MAY 6: i’m getting up much early and heading east. the plan is to be at the arizona drop-off spot early afternoon so we can load it before our 5 p.m. deadline. there might be further loading at another location.
SATURDAY, MAY 7: my uncle and i are going to try and be on the road by 6 a.m. a stop in tuscon is possible but the key is to push hard as we can on this day. we should hit big spring sometime in the mid-afternoon. then it’s onto dallas.
SUNDAY, MAY 8: the big dallas hoe-down. this will involved a lot of the texas folks working on collecting goods and such. we are likely to unload the truck and then re-load it with the highest priority items.
MONDAY, MAY 9: heading out early in the a.m. to ruston where we’ll hook up with the folks there for awhile and add their stuff to the largesse. then we will push on to jackson, miss where TiderInTn has set us up with a place to stay.
TUESDAY, MAY 10: we will hit tuscaloosa sometime mid-morning and unload this bad boy. THEN we’re gonna turn it around and head back west. hopefully we can make it at least as far as ruston.
WEDNESDAY, MAY 11: push on to dallas, reload the bad boy and turn back around for tuscaloosa. once again, we’ll be crashing in jackson.
THURSDAY, MAY 12: back to tuscaloosa. where we’ll unload the truck and then go to do as many local runs with it as we can for the rest of the day.
FRIDAY, MAY 13: return the truck. collapse in a heap.

I'm not a superstitious person at all,
but after viewing that last date on your amazing schedule, why don’t you go ahead and throw ya a lucky rabbit’s foot on your keychain just in case. You might want to throw ya a little salt over your shoulder while your at it, and then maybe knock or lightly tap on some wood, you know, just for fun. But like I said, I’m not superstitious [insert nervous laugh here].

Wow, I just read the link....
This has been a wild year thus far for weather and natural disasters. I hope the Mighty M doesn’t give you any trouble, but I have 100% confidence you’ll make it through even if it does. You really are doing a great job with all of this.

Are You/We Looking For Media Coverage?
If so, has anyone called Paul Finebaum to get the word out? He’s “national” now you know … and maybe he, with his connections, can get some local/national TV coverage for us. We’ve got a bunch of folks donating stuff out here in SoCal. Maybe we’ll overfill the truck and have to send another. I’ve contacted someone her in L.A. (the left-coast L.A.) that has possible connections with KCAL Channel 9TV. Also, how about decking the truck out with some BAMA gear (Door magnets, Flags, whatever) Something so folks along the way know it’s the BAMA EXPRESS! … Actually, someone out here has offered his giant door magnets.
were good on dressing the truck up
and we might get some publicity, we might not. these posts on RBR and the ones on WTC are aimed at our core audiences which is the priority. outside of that, it’s just one more thing to deal with on the trip. if they call us, great. otherwise i’m hip deep in busy.

Just saw the media question now
after I tweeted you about it here. We are working on getting local TV/Newspaper coverage here in Ruston for the North LA stop.
