A little background is needed. Th following is a facebook note sent out by Emily Pitek. For those unfamiliar, Pitek was a soccer player at Bama in the late 00s and was a mega fan at pretty much every athletic event we had. I remember her very well gymnastics meets, always dresses in something crazy, cheering on the girls and having a good time. Well, anyways, since she graduated she has continued to be a mainstay at the softball games, leading chants, heckling opponents and just enhancing the atmosphere with her presence (and her overalls and giant sombrero).
If nothing else, she was the biggest softball fan period, new most of the girls personally as well as the coaching staff, who loved her too. And what she wrote was pretty well put.
I know a lot of you know that I simply love Alabama softball. And many people have called and asked certain things....of which I know nothing.
But there are some things that I know without a shadow of a doubt.
First, I respect Patrick Murphy and Aly Habetz to the utmost. They have poured their heart and soul into building the Alabama Softball brand for well over a decade. The things they did were not done because they were fake, or because they wanted to seem a certain way. They are genuine and they are people with huge hearts. I thank them for everything they have done for me, a crazy injury-prone former soccer player who simply wanted something to cheer about in a search for happiness. So thank you both for that.
Secondly, college softball is a business. It may not be at some schools, or at some levels, but this is Division I....in SEC country. As a coach, sometimes you have to do things that better your career, and the hardest part about that is leaving people you have establish bonds with behind.
Third, at Alabama we have always hung our hat on being a program that operates with CLASS. I hope that this sentiment and attribute will remain strong. I have seen the resolve of the girls already so soon into all of this that makes me quite confident in their future success. I would hope that as fans of this program, and of these players, that we follow suit.
THE ALABAMA SOFTBALL JOB is now open. AND IT IS THE BEST JOB IN THE NATION. THE ENTIRE NATION. Whomever the Athletic Department decides is the right person to lead this program on a continued path of success, is one we should all support with open arms and a rich excitement and anticipation about many winning seasons ahead.
Nick Saban said upon his hiring, "I think class is a real critical part of any organization. It’s a word that I see, that comes up on our board when we do some of our traditional stuff here as a part of our university, as a part of our football tradition. I think class is an important part of what we try to do in terms of how we represent our state, our institution, and I want this program to always reflect class in how we go about doing things. We expect it from the players, and if we don’t get it, we certainly do everything we can to correct it and change their behavior so that we do get it. And I think that that should extend to every part of the organization. Every part of the organization. I don’t care if you are a supporter, or you’re a fan, or whatever you do, the way you support the team should be done with class as well."
IT WORKED FOR HIM, and our football program!!! I think this team and these players and this program is ready to take that next step into being a NATIONAL CHAMPION!
I ask all Alabama Softball fans to continue in their INCREDIBLE support of my friends, and our role models on and off the field. They are the ambassadors of the game, and representitives of our fabulous institution who are responsible for many small athletes who now have dreams of playing college softball...not at Arizona, not at UCLA, but at ALABAMA.
I would love nothing more than to see 3,000+ people at the press conference of the next coach, at Rhoads Stadium this summer. And we will cheer. And I will bring my sombrero. And we will have a party that only the TIDE can throw. And most importantly, the players.....will smile. Because, after all, folks....change is sometimes good. And it will be at that moment, that we will realize... everything will be okay :)
I leave you with a few final thoughts....
