Take it with a grain of salt, but Sheridan doesn't often deal in rumors.

Sheridan's a Bama fan

the REC probably got to him and told him what to say. Plus he is just a bookie so what does he know. If this is true it proves Auburn was innocent since it was this thrid party acting on his own and Auburn had no knowledge of it. It is still about Mississippi State and this is just a smokescreen to get them to let their guard down. God is on our side.

Seems kind of pointless...

Well, yes, obviously there is a legitimate inference to be made that someone affiliated with Auburn paid Cam Newton a significant sum of money to sign with Auburn, and with the NCAA investigation ongoing into his recruitment it is therefore easily understood that the NCAA would be looking for the bag man.

That’s all irrelevant, though. We know they are looking, but have they found anything? That’s the $200,000 question.

Sheridan's source within the NCAA

seems to think they have id’d both the bag man and the money man. The only thing now would be to get one of the two to roll.

The only thing I am willing to lend creedence to is Sheridan's 25+ year relationship to his "source."

Of course, this depends greatly on the truthfulness of THAT claim.

One thing is for sure, there appeared to be a fair share of back-tracking and insecurity once he made his claims. I’m only saying… Hopefully his claim is more than just smoke on the eve of Cheesik’s SEC howler.

Money to church = tax fraud?

Since churches are tax exempt, and all? Suddenly our Heisman Trophy winner with the dad in jail might not be the only one with a dad in jail…and he’d still have his trophy.

I don't think just receiving the money in a church would be tax fraud.

For instance, if a drug dealer gives 100 grand off of his latest deal to the local church, the church would not be in any trouble. The individual would be, if he tried to claim a deduction without reporting the income, but the church is ok to receive it.

The issue of tax fraud would come up if Cecil simply laundered it thru, or embezzled it out in a way that allowed him to get the money without reporting it as personal income.

The other 150 or so grand that he received, however, most assuredly did not make it to his 1040, and that is blatant tax evasion.

Slight tangent on this topic...

I was leaving work last night and turned it on Finebaum (yes, I know, I know…). They (Paul, Danny Sheridan, and Clay Travis) were talking about this issue. Then Travis asked the question to Paul and Danny, “If they could only choose one, do you think that the majority of Alabama fans were prefer a National Championship or for Auburn to get caught and busted by the NCAA?”. Both Paul and Clay thought a large majority of Bama fans would choose for Auburn to get busted OVER a NC…!!!! WTF is that?

If someone came up to me and asked that question, I don’t think it would take a full second to say, National Championship – hands down. Cuz, if we won the NC, then chances are we beat the Barn, so who gives a crap if they were on probation or not…

What do you folks think? Am I in the minority here?

championship

because, to be honest, i give not a single shit about this whole cam newton/auburn nonsense. none. all i cared about was that he was the quarterback on the field when we played them and he was (for the exact same reason i wanted tebow on the field when we played florida in 2009). all of this incessant nattering about the ncaa and payoffs and whatnot has zero to do with 1) the alabama team i’m excited to see take the field this fall and 2) the auburn team that will compete against them in the sec west division. the past is over. coach saban says “stay focused on the process of becoming champions” and all this bullshit is nothing but a distraction from that.

Also agreed on the ‘player on the field’ comments. I would have much preferred Colt Cold on the field in the NC game.

I watched that game the other night

I’m not so sure the T-Sips don’t have a point with this one. Seems like they sacked Greg every other play. I’m not saying they definitively would’ve won with Colt in, but… it would have been a different game.

by TexaninNYC on Jul 21, 2011 1:49 PM CDT up reply actions

There is no argument on it being a different game

It definitely would have been a different (and much better) game overall. But we also went into a hole and wasn’t exactly trying to fool anyone on offense either. Our style, once we had a good lead, went to ‘shut down on defense and run the damn clock on offense’. Thus, we ended up with a much different game than what was expected by either team. Texas was a very good team as their second half ‘comeback’ proved…

Even with all of that, though, I still don’t think they win that game, IMO.

The only reason I would care

Is if there is, in fact, a culture of pay-for-play at Auburn that would give them the unfair competitive advantage in the future. However, if there was in the past, the microscope they’re under now is going to make that culture all but impossible to sustain going forward, so for all intents and purposes, the only good things that can come out of this for Alabama already have.

lulz...
Elsewhere in the not news worthy department, a former Alabama graduate and current bookie Danny Sheridan, broke a huge news story on the Paul Finebaum show about a “bag man” the NCAA has interviewed in the Cam Newton case. Apparently he lied, and was backtracking out his statements before the end of the show. I know I’m shocked that someone would lie about the investigation surrounding the Cam Newton recruitment, aren’t you?

What is a ‘former graduate?’ Did UA take back the degree?
