Around SBN: Win or Lose, Boston Celtics' New Big 3 Era A Success

The Jumbo Package | 7.6.11

First off, we are aware of the "Dee Hart tore is ACL" chatter that's been floating around on Twitter since last night.  No one official has confirmed it, so until they do fingers crossed it's just a rumor. If it's not, there's still no need to panic. We're talking about a true freshman here who's biggest role will likely be on special teams or as a sub package back.  Richardson and Lacey are going to be handling 95% of the load while Jalston Fowler is more than capable of being the 3rd back, so it's not a huge blow to depth. Still, hate to see anyone get hurt, especially since the severity of the injury and rehab process could have long term effects on his career.

Stephanie VanBrakle Named Alabama Pitching Coach - rolltide.com

Alabama head softball coach Patrick Murphy has named former Crimson Tide All-American Stephanie VanBrakle as the new pitching coach, he announced Tuesday. VanBrakle returns to Tuscaloosa after spending one season as the head coach at Samford.

In her first season as a head coach in 2009, VanBrakle led the Panthers to a remarkable 32-5 record. The team broke 13 program records, including the mark for number of wins. Her first team posted a .364 team batting average and 1.19 ERA. In 2010, VanBrakle's team finished with a record of 25-9 overall and 12-4 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference.

SEC math says back Bulldogs, doubt Tigers - CBSSports.com

Though the above "slipping and sliding" Steele metric is mildly doubtful of Carolina's ability to maintain last year's gains, neither presumptive divisional favorite has anything to worry about from this statistical perspective. In fact, thanks to several blowout wins and their losses to LSU and Auburn by a combined four points, Alabama was the second-most unfortunate team in the league last year behind Georgia.

If the Tide get a handful more breaks and have the defense we're all expecting? Look out.

7. Kirby Smart (Alabama defensive coordinator) Smart is ready for a promotion. He won the Frank Broyles Award, given to the nation’s top assistant, in 2009. He is Alabama’s assistant head coach and is the highest-paid coach Nick Saban’s staff. He’s a top recruiter and has NFL experience, all the ingredients to be a good head man somewhere. With the Crimson Tide defense expected to rise again this fall, we’d be shocked if he’s still at Alabama in 2012.

Assuming it is true, do you think that Corey Grant is kicking himself right now? He would have been the only other change of pace guy that have.

Fumbles. It was always Fumbles

I donno… I think that could hurt our RB depth pretty badly. First off, he’s a different kind of back. And RB’s tend to get banged up. Even if they can play, they may not be at 100%. Last year Ingram and Richardson were both banged up. I seem to recall that coming to a head in the LSU game .

Eh...he's a scat back.

Sure he brought a different skillset to the table, but this guy says you can have your silly skills:

Kirby Smart gone in 2012?

Just depends on what he is offered. I think Richt could very well be gone in 2012 because I think UGA will be only about 7-5 and even if they find 9-3 thyey are still going to lose to UF AGAIN.

If Richt is gone they may very well go to Smart and he will go. Short of UGA coming open Kirby may decide not to go to a perenial SEC losers like Vandy or MSU when Mullen flees for greener pastures after this year. Being such a defensive guy he would be smart to stay in th south away from the Big 12 or Pac 10 or whatever they are all called now. I could see him going ACC, but does he really want to toil away at Clemson (I think Dabo is going to get the boot) or even worse Virginia when UGA may one day come calling if he sits tight at Bama?

Like I said, given the right situation (UGA, SC, or GT) he will go, but maybe he decides to stay a year or two more. I can not see us doing a CIW with him or anyone else.

If Auburn was in New Mexico and we never played them I would still hate them and their dumb coach and their cheating players.

smart's lack of head coaching experience is his biggest hindrance

in terms of taking a premier job. it’s also probably not a wise move for him to enter the HC ranks at a high-profile program. having a few years leading a lower-tier school would be critical for his success and i’ll bet any amount of money that’s what coach saban will advise him.

that said, i don’t see smart taking over western kentucky or a similar team if he does enter the coaching ranks. but hopping to the likes of georgia in one jump – even if it becomes possible – would be essentially setting him up to fail.

I hate to think of Coach Smart leaving, but you know it will happen some day.

I have no doubt that he SHOULD succeed at a place like UGA. However, I think too many people affiliated with that school have gotten used to interjecting their opinion during the Richt era.

Alas, I think Richt and UGA will have an excellent 2011 season, so Richt won’t be fired unless the Dawgs’ 2012 starts 4-4, or worse.

Interesting fact...

no Alabama player has ever won the Maxwell award.

Thirteen.

by Darth Saban on Jul 6, 2011 8:56 PM CDT reply actions

In fact, there have only been 8 SEC Maxwell winners:

1. Charles Trippi, Georgia, 1946
2. Herschel Walker, Georgia, 1982
3. Danny Wuerffel, Florida, 1996
4. Peyton Manning, Tennessee, 1997
5. Eli Manning, Ole Miss, 2003
6. Tim Tebow, Florida, 2007
7. Tim Tebow, Florida, 2008
8. Cam Newton, Auburn, 2010

Thirteen.
