13 Teams In The SEC Can Work!
The SEC will probably one day go to 14 teams and eventually 16 teams. But, right now we are just talking about, and talking with A&M. Everyone assumes you can not have a 13 team league as it will be unbalanced. However you can very easily do a 13 team league.
To begin with you just do away with divisions. Then each team plays 8 games. The top two teams meet in a Championship Game. Ties can be decided first by head to head and then by strength of non-conference schedule. This will encourage SEC teams to beef up non-conference schedules.
As far as the 8 games you play there is a simple plan. Each team will have 4 regular opponents and 8 rotating opponents. This is the way it was in the SEC before 1992. And you would actually play the 8 rotating opponents more often than we even play the East Teams we rotate right now. Basically every rotating opponent would be on your schedule 50% of the time. Current rotating opponents (for us Vandy, SC, UGA, etc.) are only on our schedule 40% of the time. And for students that means that in 4 years they would get to see every SEC team in play BDS. (Right now students get to see every SEC team but one in their 4 years.)
To keep things fair you would need to make the regular opponent strength as even as possible while still keeping the traditional games like GA-FL, Bama-UT, etc. Actually this would not be that hard to do. I worked out a little sample myself last night in about 20 minutes. Because programs do progress and regress the regular opponents would need to be adjusted about every ten years.
There is one thing I’m not sure of though. Does the NCAA require 2 divisions to play a championship game? If they do, and we wanted to stick with 13 teams we would need to get the NCAA to give us permission. Considering the situation and the money I feel they would.
By the way SEC Basketball had wiped out the divisions. I doubt anyone is going to mind.
So, we need to forget the "expansion will never happen because we don’t have a 14th team" talk and just deal with A&M right now. I’m not in favor of any expansion personally, but picking up 1 extra team with a big market would be preferable to me to going all the way to 16.

Hmmmm. Hmm. Even without a tinfoil hat, I can see how this argument might make sense.
One of the reasons basketball can wipe divisions with less concern/hoopla is that you already play the entire conference once. Another is that the conference championship is decided by a tournament. All that divisions did was determine who your home-and-homes were with each year and screw up the seeding in the SEC tournament.

Certainly, possible.
But if 16 teams is an idea that is on the table for the presidents, the commissioner is going to be highly motivated to get that done sooner rather than later. The timing may not yet be right but you can bet that Slive will take this A&M opportunity to see if further expansion is possible.
And the Big Ten...
…operated for a while with 11 members. Not idea, but they’ll find a way to make it work if they think it helps in the long run, though I don’t believe they’ll stop at 13.
No thanks.
You will get ties. It just makes then less clear in terms of who deserves to be where.
Anyone who appeals to markets as a fan should have their head examined.
They all play each other.
That stops the ties, heads up winner decides it.
If you don’t play all the teams from your individual division, then you won’t always have the heads up tie breaker.
There can still be the...
…Oklahoma, Texas, Texas Tech scenario of a few years ago. Head to head is out the window in a three way tie.
I don’t believe they’ll stop at 13
we won’t so why WOULD they?

Would work but not with your scenario
Too much juggling of schedules. Wouldnt it be easier to just have the West teams drop 1 non-con and add Aggies. then Ags play 3 teams from East determined by lottery.
East would have three teams playing 9 conf games (they’d have to drop a non-con), and 3 playing 8. It’s “neutral” in the sense that it is determined by luck of the draw AND the extra game against A&M has as much chance to hurt a team as to help it, just depending on how strong A&M is. Ags should have a pretty good team in 2012, though we do lose our QB, one of 2 RBs, and to receiver. I would think we’ll have a Top 15 team in 2012.

we're probably
not going to take steps like these to accomodate you guys. my guess is we wait til we’ve found a 14th member, either FSU or UNC and you both join together.
my hope is that we’d boot arkansas or USCe out and let you in. but i doubt that will happen.
if mizzou some how gets in to the SEC, then i motion Bama goes independant.

As has been said before, Arkansas is a natural rival for A&M.
I don’t think we’d boot Arky to get A&M. And we’re also not going to boot Spurrier from the SEC.
God bless our Dark Lord.
yeah
and it sucks. cause we’d be better off with 12, not 14 or 16. and we’d be better off with aTm instead of arky or USCe, too bad it wont come to fruition.
