As the "lead dog," Richardson approaches his role with genuine concern to help improve teammates, who will one day replace him. Richardson is facing an interesting challenge. Not only is he replacing 2009 Heisman Trophy winner Mark Ingram, but he also must bring along less experienced players. The loss of transfers of Demetrius Goode and Corey Grant suddenly left a deep backfield with less depth. When asked, Richardson speaks encouragingly of the progress being made. He likes the versatility of Blake Sims and the improvements of true freshman Brent Calloway.
"This is the time that you start to try to get your players back," Saban said. "But at the same time there’s a lot of fundamental improvement that we need to make." Saban also said his team needed to maintain its intensity and mental toughness through practices. "We need more guys to finish and compete and be responsible," Saban said. "We can’t develop the attitude that we’re going to endure practice. "That’s a dangerous place to go when you just start enduring practice instead of going out there with a purpose and improving on things you need to improve on."
Freshman running back Dee Hart made his first appearance of the preseason on the practice field. He was in a black noncontact jersey, pedaling a stationary bicycle. Hart is recovering from a torn knee ligament that he suffered in early July.
The surprise of the offseason so far has been the progression of redshirt freshman receiver DeAndrew White. White was a four star receiving recruit out of Galena Park, Texas, and redshirted in 2010. White has been the recipient of a lot of praise from head coach Nick Saban, and coming from a coach that doesn’t give out praise that much, it is obviously saying something. White has great speed, and should be Alabama’s 3rd receiver this season. White should be the #2 receiver for the first two games while Hanks sits out.
2.] OL Barrett Jones, Alabama: In an otherwise ordinary year for offensive linemen in the league, the versatile Jones ranks as a legitimate all-america candidate. Plug Jones in at any spot up front and he'd likely be an upgrade over the incumbent.

It could have been the first day of classes on any college campus. But the tone was different at Alabama, just months after a tornado hit.
Here are the odds to win the SEC and each division. You'll note the Alabama Crimson Tide and Florida Gators are your favorites, with the latter being a sure sign Vegas has thrown its hands in the air and may never catch them again.
Alabama head softball coach Patrick Murphy named Adam Arbour as a volunteer assistant coach for the upcoming season. Arbour comes to the program from the University of Michigan, where he played on the Wolverine baseball team and was a manager for the softball team. "We are very fortunate to have Adam on our staff," Murphy said. "We respect coach (Carol) Hutchins and her staff at Michigan very much and try to emulate their program in many ways. All of us are looking forward to working with Adam."
Bond is set today for a man charged with shooting a former Crimson Tide football standout and current NFL free agent Antwon Odom.
"During the course of the investigation we got enough probable cause to obtain a search warrant for his home. The reason was to search for certain items that will assist in the ongoing investigation and will help either prove or disprove the allegations against Jefferson." Investigators left with several brown bags of evidence, but Stone said he could not immediately discuss what items were taken from the senior quarterback's home.
The East Baton Rouge Parish district attorney said he is pursuing charges against two men involved in a June 5 fight with LSU football players Zach Mettenberger and Sam Montgomery in which a loaded gun was pointed at the players. District Attorney Hillar Moore III said charges will likely be filed against Marcus Adams, 22, and Robert Davis, 31, within the next two weeks. Montgomery and Davis got into a fight following an argument in the parking lot of the West Campus Apartments, prompting Davis’ friend, Adams, to pull out a gun, the LSU Police incident report says.
It would certainly be fare if tailgating menus for the Penn State-Alabama football game had a Southern flair, Michele Marchetti writes.
Host: Oregon's a place that's had a great run, no question about it. … Looking back on it, do you feel like you made the right decision to go there?
Seastrunk: I felt like I did. When I first intentionally went there, I felt like God wanted to be there. But God also does things — God also pulls you out of the storm before it happens. So I felt like something was about to go down and God just wanted me to get up out of there, so… And I feel like I'm back home where people love me and generally care about me and I'm around my family.
