News outlets in Tennessee are reporting that Alabama's Executive Director of Athletics, Dave Hart, has been offered the University of Tennessee Athletic Director job. We are still waiting word but this would be a big loss of UA and a huge coup for the Vols.
Outside of Coach Saban, Hart's hiring in 2008 might be the most important made on the watch of UA AD Mal Moore. Hart has pretty much run the day-to-day operations for some time now and, more importantly, he's been in charge of bolstering the effectiveness of the compliance department.
There's a reason we turn a deaf ear when nattering websites try and make a case against Alabama athletes based on flimsy evidence. When the UA compliance department issues a statement saying they have investigated an incident that statement carries weight.
And that's not homerism. Quality investigative reporters who know a thing or two about college football scandals know it as well. The key to preventing scandals comes down to "leadership and compliance" and Dave Hart has definitely provided that at The Capstone.
UPDATE:: Don Kausler Jr tweets that UA has confirmed Hart has conferred with UT about the AD job "and no timeframe exists for making a decision."

Well, that would still leave us
needing an assistent AD. Ozzie ain’t coming if he doesn’t get the top spot (and he might not even then).

Yeah I doubt that we could even get him to be the head guy.
But, Dave Hart has done a good job. Maybe we could offer him the title of AD in waiting.
If Auburn was in New Mexico and we never played them I would still hate them and their dumb coach and their cheating players.

Do you think he really wants
all of the Vol’s problems right now? I know he came to Alabama at a not-so-great time (i.e. textbookgate), but surely other, more stable, programs have their eyes on him too. On the other hand, the Vols are a top-tier university overall, sports-wise, and are just having some really down years, so maybe he jumps at the chance.

it's the top slot at one of the premier athletic departments in the country
i’d hate to see him go but this is a fantastic opportunity for him and a damn smart choice by the vols.

I don't know I'd call it premier.
They’re great.
But not in the context of $Texas, Michigan, ND, or us.

I disagree
I think UT Athletics is pretty big, especially taking into account basketball, both teams.

I didn't say they were us, but I'd argue they are a premier AD
not in the last couple of years, but definitly over the past 25 years they are pretty damn good.

Right.
But why leave here for a program that isn’t as good.
That’d almost be a lateral move.

I'm not disagreeing that with you at all
I was only speaking to your placement of UT as a non-premier AD. I completely agree on your other point.

"damn smart choice," "huge coup"
I like these phrases you use. Crossing my fingers.
One of these days, we’re going to have a 3SIO rematch in Atlanta, and it’s gonna be awesome.

I
don’t know, aside from fundraising, he’s basically doing the AD job at Alabama now. One would think Moore is close to retirement. If he hangs in there a few more years, he would officially have the job. If I had a choice of driving a VW now, or an Audi a few years from now, well you get the idea.

What do we know about Hart's age, experience...?
TN might almost be a lateral move, compared to where he’s positioned now.
define "problems"
the NCAA stuff has blown over, and fairly little happened apart from firing Pearl.
If you just mean “a football and basketball program that have seen better days,” it’s a fair statement, but not something I’d expect to scare a potential AD.

"Problems"
chief among them would be having to look at that god-awful puke orange every day.

as screwed up as tennessee looked at the end of the fulmer reign
they have made some very intelligent hires since. hart would be a continuation of that.
the big reason i’m crediting hart with the effectiveness of bama compliance is because he has allowed the department to operate without the kind of restraints that have scuppered other schools. it’s not enough to hire a quality compliance staff – ohio state has one of the largest in the country – you have to let them do their jobs. that happened at alabama with hart at the helm.

alright, kleph
you’ve taken me from “who is he?” to “WE HAVE TO GET THIS GUY” in about ten minutes.

one of the things we've examined in detail here at RBR
is how the turmoil in the athletic department has historically led to serious issues with the football program. probably the number one hire that turned the crimson tide around was not saban, but robert witt.
what we’ve seen in the past five years is a very professionally run athletic department. the most obvious example of that is the success of the football team but pretty much the whole scope of the sports at alabama have seen improvement.
my belief is that these individual units are improving partly because they are not having to deal with the more administrative issues that divert their resources. people like dave hart are doing that and then – and this is the tricky part – letting the people under him have enough leeway to do their jobs.
i recognize this because i’ve spent years covering multi-billion dollar construction companies. the most successful tend to have a robust and effective internal structure that gives solid support to the supplementary units but also sufficient autonomy. it takes a lot of extremely skilled people to pull it off, much less to excell at it. and we’ve seen that happen at the capstone.
Remember the Rose Bowl: The Story of the Alabama Crimson Tide & the Grandaddy of Them All
need another testament to hart's merit?

But isn't he destined to take over as our AD when Mal steps down?
Why leave for UT when the UA job may be his soon?

I can only imagine what kind of underpaid pressure cooker a compliance director works within.
Imagine (despite recruiting and excellent coaching) that the life of all sports programs rests on YOUR shoulders. For that salary, the pressure is hardly fair.

This was going to be my big question for you
As much of a difference as Dave Hart has made, do you think we have anyone in place to continue that legacy? Could it be a situation where Dave created a better system for us and now we just need responsible people who can run the system?

UT Denying the rumors so far....
per this website….basically stating that a deal isn’t even on the table as of right now.
Now, I put about as much stock in the “denial” of the rumor as I do with the SEC and Texas A&M “denials” about A&M coming to the SEC….and I think most of us are pretty clear how that’s going to turn out. UT obviously wouldn’t want to deal with the embarassment of being shot down after putting any publicity into their desire for Hart.
I hope we keep the guy. ‘Bama is his alma mater and the LSU guy already turned them down to stay in Baton Rouge after getting a pay raise. I think with Mal Moore in his 70’s, and Hart the “heir apparent”, he has a pretty good shot of being the top guy in the next year or so (perhaps sooner).
I hope we put the “AD-in-waiting” tag on him with pay commensurate to that of Mal Moore. We’ll see how this plays out though.
