Alabama vs. Penn State: The Game Programs

Bamapennstate2010_medium
September 11, 2010; Tuscaloosa, AL
# 1 Alabama 24 - # 18 Penn State 3

Between 1959 and 1990, Alabama and Penn State met on the gridiron a total of 13 times. The first three occasions the two teams faced each other were in high-stakes bowl games but for the entire 1980s the two teams were an annual regular season matchup. The Crimson Tide and the Nittany Lions resumed their unique rivalry last season, a full twenty years after the last contest. On Saturday, Alabama will return to Beaver Stadium for the first time since 1989. To mark this auspicious occasion Roll Bama Roll is taking a looking back at the history of this series through the game program covers.

The '79 cover...

is definitely the best. I was at the game last year and couldn’t find a program anywhere.

Thomas on the cover of 88

program had a game for the ages that day. A record 9 QB hurries and National Player of the Week. He almost won the game by himself.

This was also a great game to watch in person and you would not think that of an 8-3 game. The crowd was into the game and Thomas’ relentless play.

If Auburn was in New Mexico and we never played them I would still hate them and their dumb coach and their cheating players.

I would love to see that game again.

I was just logging in to say essentially the same thing, when I saw your post. Fitting he made the cover, because he destroyed Penn State from every direction. What a talent. I think he had like 27 sacks or something ridiculous that year.

Ummm

Which moron scheduled Penn State for homecoming??

This was a great series and have always felt we should always have at least one non-conference game a year against a traditional powerhouse. This is what makes college football great.

'84 game was a high point in a tough season.

The Tuscaloosa heat and humidity were a factor.

And after the heartbreak of the ’83 game, it was classic.

And amen, I’d watch that ‘88 game again, most definitely! LET’S KICK IT OFF ALREADY!

Anyone else notice the second little pic on the '88 cover?

Looks like Derrick is doing one of those Russian dances.

In this series, the 1989 game is my favorite. I probably haven’t seen the 1988 game since my VHS tapes demagnetized, though.

You can tell these are two defensive minded programs . . .

Several games in that run where only FGs were scored. I remember the 84 game — the Penn State FG kicker hit the upright and missed a FG right before half. He then complained to the refs because the goal post uprights appeared to be leaning to one side. He probably had a legitimate beef. Ray Perkins was very excited after that win because it was about the only bright spot short of the wrong way Bo game.

Very nice article

I can honestly say that I am More than “Six Flags” excited about getting the chance to see this game in person. RTR
