Schottenheimer's Resume (as told by a Jets Fan)

Upon hearing the news that Brian Schottenheimer would be interviewing for our vacant offensive coordinator position, I relayed the news to a few co-workers who happen to be New York Jets fans. I just wanted to get a feel for how the fanbase felt of his coaching abilities. I do not follow the Jets so I had no idea. Needless to say, they were not fans. I was forwarded an email that was passed around their fanbase satirically mocking Schottenheimer's resume. Here is the copy and paste. It is somewhat humorous so take it for what it is...

Brian Schottemheimer's Resume (as told by a NY Jets fan)

Overview of Strengths

Ability to coach a mediocre offense, with either a competent veteran (Chad Pennington), a top ten draft pick (Mark Sanchez), or a future Hall of Famer (Brett Favre) at quarterback.
Can receive constant praise for innovation due to confusing calls and despite me never breaking tendencies.
Can get away with calling 67 passes in a run first offense, without my head coach even noticing.
My offense allows for 75% of our fans to call out the play before it is ran.

Offensive Philosophy

On every single play, split my fullback out in the slot and motion him into fullback even though I know everybody knows he isn’t staying in the slot and will motion in.
Also sub in a specific receiver who is bigger and can block so I can motion him in towards the formation on all running plays.
Sub out four or five players on every play, we need a specific group to throw with and a specific group to run with.
Use all of these motions and subbing to confuse my offense, so we can have multiple false start penalties and delay of games, along with blowing timeouts frequently.
Never, ever throw the football down the field outside the hashes. The entire game takes place within 5 yards of the quarterback, inside of the hash marks.
Ignore the running game when it is working. Ignore the passing game when it is working.
Run stretch plays with my slowest running back in 2nd and short to set up 3 and 5.
Run 4 yard crossing routes on 3rd and 9.
Do not use explosive players enough – see Leon Washington, Joe McKnight.

Highlights

Needed my team to call timeout before the first play of the game, even though we had the first play scripted all week.
Dropped Mark Sanchez back 67 times against the New York Giants pass rush, when we were averaging 5 yards per carry.
Played Matthew Mulligan 25 snaps per game for an entire season.

Favorite Plays

Shotgun 4-wide, throw a 4 yard hook route to the tight end, usually on 3rd and long.
Motion receiver towards the formation and run toss, usually for a 3 or 4 yard loss.
Play action boot on 2nd and short out of the same formation, where the quarterback only has the option to throw to the tight end in the flat.
Slant. Slant. Slant.

Standard Drives

1st and 10 – Run the football for a 1 yard gain.
2nd and 9 – Throw 4 yard hook route to tight end.
3rd and 5 – Throw 3 yard crossing route.

1st and 10 – Run the football for a 7 yard gain.
2nd and 3 – Go shotgun, get the quarterback sacked.
3rd and 12 – Draw or check down to running back.

1st and 10 – Throw slant for 8 yards
2nd and 2 – Play action boot, quarterback rolls out, throws incompletion.
3rd and 2 – Shotgun, sack or incompletion.

This is funny

But written by someone with an axe to grind, or described by such. I have read that he was pretty limited in what he could do with Sanchez having hit his ceiling. With the exception of one year where they were 25th, his offenses always finished around 15th in the league. If your QB is your weak link, in THAT league, finishing 15th ain’t bad. We’ll see. Like I’ve written, I trust CNS. Might not have been my first choice as a fan, but there’ll be no questions from me if this is Saban’s hand picked guy.

Schottenheimer at OC scares the crap out of me. No axe to grind here and haven’t watched too much jets this year but my general take is that he 1) doesn’t quickly adapt to his talent on hand 2) makes things way too complicated to the point of hilarity and 3) falls into predictable patterns. I worry that most of these things would be exaggerated at the college level. I do think he’s a smart guy though, it could be that he just needs a fresh start.

everyone knows....

Schotty sucks as an OC! Mark Sanchex has under-acheived and remember the idotic play-calling in the afc championship game last year vs the steelers???? The Jets ran him off……the Falcons do NOT want him and I can’t believe CNS would hire him……

Not worried.

Saban gets the best out of everybody or they don’t stay around.

his assistants

don’t stay around because people realize what he realized when he hired them. i don’t remember him having to fire a staff member in which he originally hired. kirby smart will probably be a great head coach, unless he is battling saban for recruits in the sec. i think dooley and muschamp mightve made it if they hadnt chosen to compete with their mentor. and yes, i am saying their days are numbered

Well, firing ain't the only answer.

He didn’t fire Applewhite, but it was pretty clear Saban wasn’t happy with the job he was doing. It wasn’t really Applewhite’s fault…he just not ready for a big time CFB coordinator position, and Saban didn’t have too many options when he arrived, but Saban got rid of him in the nicest way possible without firing him.

Yes, but hate to have another Applejacks in the house.

If Auburn was in New Mexico and we never played them I would still hate them and their dumb coach and their cheating players.

NBC Sports reporting...

…that Bama may be turning its attention to Doug Nussmeier, who has been Washington’s OC for the past 3 seasons. Their report originates from ESPN’s Schlabach via Twitter. This year UW finished 25th nationally in scoring offense and 38th nationally in total offense. Has CFL, NFL, and college experience, though still pretty young. Played at Idaho for Scott Linehan. Remember, Coach Mac was not a big name when he was hired.

Washington had a decent offense last season

….of course they didn’t play against the top defenses either…

by akbrown15 on Jan 12, 2012 10:36 PM CST up reply actions

Coach Mac didn't at Fresno...

…except for that occasionally scheduled USC game, and they always rolled out points vs that defense. I trust Coach Saban to make the same type of hire.

Interesting.

Chris Brown wrote an interesting article for Dr. Saturday awhile back about how Pete Carroll took over USC’s offense away from Norm Chow aftr the first year. Chow could call the shots during games but the playbook and gameplanning were left to Lane Kiffin and Steve Sarkasian. So will this guy, if hired, incorporate a West Coast offense modified with zone blocking, inside power running, and downfield passing?

yeah, Applewhite might

not have been ran off…but he wasn’t asked to stay either.

May have a checkered past, and wasn't a great fit at UCLA..

But I think Rick Neuheisel would be a great OC and has said publicly that he’s very interested in the Alabama OC position, say what you will about the guy but he’s a great offensive mind and he handled being let go at UCLA with a ton of class

by FreeState on Jan 13, 2012 12:46 PM CST reply actions

Personally

I think he’s a horrible fit for Saban and Alabama.

Yes, I agree that his offensive mind has it’s positives, but his style won’t work. I remember one of the profile stories on him when he was hangin’ out with the players, playing a guitar and singing campfire songs and sh*t… WAY too laid back for the SEC and Bama/Saban in particular. Can you imagine the nuclear meltdown the first time Coach Saban walked into the locker room and ole Rick has the offense sitting on bean bags and painting pictures of butterflies? Yikes.

You make a great point..

and if thats the way he would carry himself then it would be a bad fit..but guys sometimes stretch their legs a bit more when they’re the head guy vs being a coordinator, so I don’t know. Probably won’t happen, but it was the first name I had heard that I thought was more than a yawn hire

Are we still in the repeat violator window?

If so, I don’t want Neuheisel.

God bless our Dark Lord.

Good point...no sense taking a chance

But I don’t think the campfire stuff would be a problem. That was primarily when he was at Colorado….that was a hell of a long time ago. He’s still scheduled to get paid another year by UCLA, so unless we paid him more as OC than they paid him as HC (not likely), he’d be working for free. But it’s an interesting thought for sure. He has cache that none of the other candidates have.

Wasn't his trouble

That he participated in an office pool for the NCAA tourney?

I think that was at Washington.

I was thinking he had some sort of record before that, but I can’t remember.

by AllTideUp on Jan 14, 2012 12:58 AM CST up reply actions

…there was playing an ineligible player in 1997 at Colorado, but he was cleared of any knowledge of the situation if I remember correctly.

But the man is just smarmy. If you saw him live on a sideline you would regret the decision, even before playing a down.

It's not what you've done but what you are doing that matters.

Oh I agree.

I don’t want him at Alabama. I agree with whoever said that he would have a huge personality clash with Saban and probably with the traditional way things are done here as a whole.

by AllTideUp on Jan 15, 2012 2:08 AM CST up reply actions

No way.

He’s a failure, a cheater, and the players at Colorado commented how the physicality of the practices dramatically improved after he left. He’s too emotional.
