can we get a plus one now?

ok... i am losing my fanpost virginity so give me some slack.......

the most likely playoff scenario to come in the near future is the plus one. for those of you who don't know what the plus one scenario consists of, you are on the wrong blogsite. i'm sure that many of you and most of the players and coaches wouldn't mind if we implemented it tomorrow.... so i am asking the ncaa, let the players and coaches decide tomorrow and let's extend the season now. do it like the senior bowl, but instead of inviting particular players, invite a team. and let each coach and player of that team accept or decline the offer for this season. gundy thinks his team can score points on the best defense in the world, so let's give him a shot. i would be willing to bet that the crimson tide of alabama would be willing to show up in full force and whip anyone who has the balls to show up. if the fourth quarter of the national championship showed me anything, it was the fact that lsu would decline the offer simply because they quit during the biggest game of their lives (you can only take so much before you tap out). so let the best defense in history play stanford first, then ok state if that's what it takes. this is something that we aren't scared of, and that is why the nation of college football should be scared of this brilliant, determined, disciplined, and most dedicated football program in the world.

FanPosts are just that; posts created by the fans. They are in no way indicative of the opinions of SBN and the authors of Roll Bama Roll.

Congrats on losing your cherry

If they want to implement a plus one, that’s fine…but the system is working fine for us. It’s now almost an absolute truth that the SEC champ is getting in…now you can be 2nd in the SEC West and get in. That’s some big time conference respect. So if they want to keep it how it is, that’s ok, too. We’re one of the handful of teams that can win in the status quo, so I’m not sweating it.
And no, the Tide wouldn’t show up to what basically amounts to a pickup game with Stanford, Okie St, or anybody else. Guys like Trent, Kirkpatrick, Hightower, Upshaw, Barron, etc. aren’t putting on the pads again until they get paid to do it. Too much at risk. But if that were the system in place, i.e., if the season weren’t over until that happened, then that would be fine with me, too.

by 13 Rings on Jan 12, 2012 11:11 PM CST reply actions

Agreed but in addition, there's another reason for not playing the pickup game

Recruiting. We have a very short amount of time to work on some of the best recruits who are going to wait until signing day to make their announcement. That’s one of the “downsides” to playing in the BCS title game anyway. You’re one of the last two coaches off the field to the point you can fully dedicate your time to focusing on recruiting.

Don't get me wrong.

If a plus one is instituted for upcoming seasons (and there’s little reason to suspect it won’t be) then so be it – I like our chances. But, as for this season, a champion has been crowned. Everyone who is whining had control of their own destiny at some point and failed to maintain it.

Don’t despair for the offseason – we need some time to relish #14.

I think the current discussions are for the 2014 season, not '12.

2014 is when the contracts will be renewed, and that’s when major changes would take effect.

Thanks for clearing that up...

I couldn’t believe that Oakland would trade Ro. Don’t follow pro ball anymore. Got tire of the bullshit between millionaire owners and players and taking 3 1/2 hours to play a game with less than ten minutes of action.

For the good of the game, a plus one would be better; however

I enjoy the fact that when Bama does make it into the big game, giving Saban a month to prepare is a huge advantage that would be mitigated by playing another game.

I don't like where a plus one would take us

and that is to a playoff. I’d prefer a provisional plus one that gives any undefeated team a shot. It would only be in efffect when more than 2 teams finish the regular season undefeated. This year you needed no plus one as the only defeated team got in the championship. The other teams, including Okie St. ONLY HAD THEMSELVES TO BLAME.

And as far as making football go on forever that is a dumb idea too. Players and fans need a break. I’m kinda looking forward to watching a little Bama BBall and taking some naps.

If Auburn was in New Mexico and we never played them I would still hate them and their dumb coach and their cheating players.

So, the top-4 BCS ranked teams make it to the playoff...

…and #5 will bitch and moan OKState-style until it’s expanded to 8 teams and so on and so on.

I am somewhat in favor of a playoff system IF IF IF IF: it doesn’t interfere with the minimum number of regular season games to be played — most importantly, HOME games. Also, I am not wild about the ever-expanding number of regular season games played every year. Damn it, a 14-game season is enough time to bruise and injure a team. Just leave it at that for a decade.

4 isn't enough

Should be at least 6, preferably 8 or 16. The ones who barely get left out will ALWAYS whine; difference is, nobody will pay the slightest bit of attention to ’em when it comes time to hand the trophy to the winner.

I would give up the 12th regular season game

if it was the only way to get from a 4 team “plus one” to a 6 team playoff, which is what I would prefer. No one cried too much (if at all) when we added that 12th game, so I’m not sure why people get so worked up about adding an extra game for just a few teams in the context of a playoff.

God bless our Dark Lord.

Okie State shit in their chillie when they lost to an unranked team with everything on the line

I am not for or against a plus 1 and it doesn’t matter what I am for or against…. I understand that. This year, whether the BCS is good or flawed, the two best teams in the nation was matched up in the title game and that is the way it is supposed to be.

IHMO the only real reason to change anything now is to shut up the cryers…. eg, Auburn 04, Boise State virtually every year or Okie State this year… who incidentally doesn’t even play a conference championship so where did that argument come from? All of us who have ever had children know that you can’t shut up a cryer. You just have to let them cry until they give up and go to sleep. You can try, but they will just find something else to cry about because that is what cryers do.

We may...

…get screwed soon if the system does not get changed, but I just can’t hate on the current system, which has given us two national championships in the last three years and gave me the added pleasure of watching AU’s 2004 team get left out in the cold….

I hope we get a plus 1

And then two SEC teams with 1 loss records beat two undefeated non-SEC teams. And there were two 1 loss non-SEC teams ranked 5th and 6th that got left out.

Of course, I would vastly prefer Bama win it all under that scenario, but I’m so tired of some of the garbage comments that I’d even root for that scenario if Auburn and Tennessee were the ones to do it. And you don’t know how much that takes out of me.

It's a "scourge" thing.

A scourge isn’t good, but some good may come from it. Think ‘92 NC game. Someone needed to wipe that smirk off of Miami’s face. I was estatic that it was us, but I’d have still appreciated the smirk wiping part even if it had been one of our biggest rivals.

If rooting for that keeps me awake at night later, that’s just a price I’ll have to pay. Heh.

by Steven Mitchell on Jan 16, 2012 12:01 PM CST up reply actions

This season will never be repeated...

the people in power will see to that. A plus one would give teams that had an off game like Bama did Nov 5 a chance to redeem themselves. Just have to finish in the top 4 and you get a chance to make amends. I think that would be in the SEC’s favor. There is going to be a bias in the future against making two SEC teams 1 and 2.
