OC Candidates

Well, I don't think any of us have been too thrilled with the mention of Brian Schottenhiemer as the next Bama OC. I'm not saying he would be a bad hire, but I would prefer someone else. There are some other names that have been floated out there so I'd like to look at those.

Washington's Doug Nussmeier has been reported as a candidate:

http://www.al.com/sports/index.ssf/2012/01/report_washingtons_doug_nussme.html

He has NFL, CFL, and college experience and has always worked as either a QB coach or an OC while performing both duties at Washington. He also spent time at Fresno State which is apparently a pipeline for us these days? Anyway, UW had the 57th ranked offense this past year with 392 ypg. Honestly, that's a little lower than I was expecting for a Pac 12 team. Alabama this year, by contrast, was ranked 30th with 433 ypg. His QB this year, Keith Price, was the 12th rated passer overall with a 157.91 rating. He also completed 67% of his passes.

I can't find any specific rankings for his other years at UW, but maybe I just don't know how to search for that. He would have also been Jake Locker's QB coach his last 2 years in school so that is also a plus on the resume. He was OC for 1 year at Fresno State in 2008.

Another candidate mentioned is Dirk Koetter:

http://espn.go.com/college-football/story/_/id/7451720/source-alabama-crimson-tide-interviewing-dirk-koetter-o-coordinator-job

This is a little more exciting to me. He probably has the best resume of any of these guys. He has extensive experience in college including being the OC at Missouri, Boston College, and Oregon. He's also a rarity in that he's been a head coach in college as well. You might remember him from his days at Arizona State and before that he was up at Boise State as the predecessor to Dan Hawkins. He had a 26-10 record at BSU, but only a 40-34 record at ASU. Then again, he's not being interviewed for head coach so whatever....

Since 2007 he's been the OC for the Jacksonville Jaguars. Here's how his offenses fared beginning in 2007. These are point total rankings out of the 32 NFL teams: 6th, 24th, 24th, 18th, 28th

Ok, so those rankings are concerning, but I think his record as a college coach is more relevant. He has a strong record there and is obviously now familiar with more pro-style concepts. He would be my choice of these 3 guys.

So who is your favorite? And is there anyone else out there that you would want over these 3?

so far

I’m firmly in the Nussmeier camp. According to NBC Sports, UW finished this season 25th in scoring offense (33.4ppg) and 38th in total offense (409.6 ypg). And that’s a drastic improvement from where they were in ’08, the season before Nussmeier arrived with Sarkisian, when they were 117th in scoring and 116th in total offense.

With our elite athletes, especially on the OL, I think Nussmeier could do quite well.

Koetter would be my second choice, I think. Schotty would be third.

Keith Price

clearly outplayed rg3 in the bowl game. Baylor won, but it was their 482 yards rushing that put ’em over the top, not Griffin.

McElwain

Brought in one guy I liked for his OC (Dave Baldwin)…

Nussmeier and Koetter seem like great options. Tom Clements is another name that is interesting…

Ah come on,

we don’t believe in second chances? Especially in light of recent events? No seriously, I don’t think there would be anything really bad about this. At least a quarterbacks coach. But there could be too much tension involved. Even on their end. I know it was a sarcastic post, so this is not trying to take it too seriously, but the thought had uncontrollably crossed my mind. I think there was some deep rooted animosity from Don Shula with his involvement with the Dolphins and Saban leaving to unseat his son. Anyway, it may would be like once owning a car dealership and having to go back to that same dealership as a car salesman. I really don’t claim to have any info to facts revolving around this scenario. It’s just commentary. I do, however, think we could do worse. I don’t know who Shula, the coach, is today compared to the one he was then. There would have to have been a chance for some maturity and growth. He at least wouldn’t have to worry about speaking to the media. I was hoping for his success when he was here. He navigated us through some tough times to his credit. I don’t believe he belongs in the Ears Whitworth category of coaches.

I've got nothing against Shula,

but yeah, he won’t be coming back to UA.

God bless our Dark Lord.

Koetter

would bring a lot to the table. Schot…please he is a Gator.

If Auburn was in New Mexico and we never played them I would still hate them and their dumb coach and their cheating players.
