Around SBN: NFL Players Ready To Welcome Gay Teammate

Alabama has contacted Stanford offensive coordinator Pep Hamilton about taking the same job with the Crimson Tide, a source close to Hamilton has confirmed.

Through a Stanford spokesperson, Hamilton declined comment, though the source said that only contact has been made and no interview has been scheduled. The source did not indicate whether the interest was mutual.

ESPN SEC Blog: Pep Hamilton to Alabama?

Some conflicting info out there right now from the self-proclaimed World-Wide Leader, so we may need to pump the brakes a bit on the Nussmeier-to-'Bama talk until we get something official.

He has solid NFL experience

I prefer Hamilton to Nussmeier, but I will support either man should he come aboard.

That is the conflicting info

They were running Hamilton-to-‘Bama on the front page of the website while at the exact same time scrolling Nussmeier-to-’Bama on the Sportscenter ticker. Again, who knows? Certainly not ESPN.

i don't think it should be that hard..

you have college football guys covering only college football. A simple call to the SEC blogger to see what info he has would clear up the confusion.

On more than one occasion, Shaw has referred to Hamilton as a “guru” when it comes to red-zone play calling. The Cardinal led the nation in red-zone efficiency this past year, scoring on 67-of-69 trips (97 percent) inside the opponent’s 20-yard line.

Sounds like he’s got a wide range of experience that will help AJ McCarron develop.

I rather

have Nussmeier, but I tend to not be a huge fan of OCs with big-time QBs and little experience like Pep Hamilton(who was OC only this year for Stanford on a team that had Andrew Luck change plays at the line).

Either way, we're going to have to immunize.

Coaches from that area are highly allergic to good defense.

Image receivers running crisp routes, on time

Not that I could tell the difference from play to play, but I suspect the difference between the ball on the money and the ball not—even in the NC game—wasn’t all on the Bama QB. It was so stark in the NC because on some of those good plays you could tell it was perfect, and on other good plays, you could see the players making adjustments for imperfection.

I’d really like to see an analysis of pass and routes in the NC by someone who knows how to do it justice.

Side by side comprasion

Pep Hamilton:
2011: OC for Stanford-
2010 for Stanford, WR coach (guys like Doug Baldwin who did well in the NFL this season, Owuso, etc.

2007-2009 for QB coach for Chicago Bears (fired in 2009). Coached Brian Griese, Rex Grossman, Kyle Orton, and Jay Cutler (who threw 26 picks that year)

2006-QB Coach for San Fran 49ers (Alex Smith’s 2nd season, 16 TDs to 16 INTs)

2004-2005: QB coach for New York Jets (Chad Pennington in 2004, Pennington got hurt in 2005 so he had corpse of Vinny Testaverde, and Wee Brooks Bollinger).

Nothing really stands out. None of his QBs had great years, of course how much value we put on QB coach, etc. His one year as an OC he had Andrew Luck.

Doug Nussmeier:
2009-2011: Washington OC: Washington was terrible on offense his 1st 2 seasons (and where awful before that as well), moved up to 25th this year from 96th in scoring (and that is after losing 1st rounder Jake Locker at QB).

2008-Fresno State, OC: 37th in scoring offense, Pat Hill connection, replaced McElwain. Tom Brandstater, QB was drafted.

2006-2007: QB coach St Louis Rams: 2006 Marc Bulger goes to his 2nd Pro Bowl and has his best season as a QB (24 TDs to 8 INTs), though he regresses/gets hurt in 2007 as Bulger and Gus Frerotte combine for 18 TD-28 INT season

2003-2005: QB Coach at Michigan State: 2003-Jeff Smoker has 21 TDs to 14 picks, drug problems, 2004 looks like a QB mess-Drew Stanton gets hurt (8 TDs to 6 INTs) and 3 different QBs have attempts, 2005: Drew Stanton (22 TDs-12 INTs) with Brian Hoyer as a back-up-both in the NFL now.

Just from this comparison

I’d have to say Nussmeier looks like the more attractive hire.

Just to say

Both Nussmeier and Pep have only one season of actually calling plays it looks like. At Washington, Sarkisian is the main play caller (Nussmeier is also the QB coach there). Hamilton’s first season as OC was this year.

but his offense left much to be desired. just look at our red zone struggles. 55% TD rate in the red zone? that is a terrible terrible stat.

by Mr. Abe Froman on Jan 16, 2012 3:34 PM CST up reply actions

I

am the other way. I don’t think McElwain was perfect (the red zone stat being the biggest problem), but I don’t think he was a problem or that the offense left much to be desired. We were a top 25-30 offense with McElwain, without running a spread pass-happy offense and without a big-time QB.

by Apeekrtr on Jan 16, 2012 3:38 PM CST up reply actions

McElwain

was a good fit at Bama because he understood what Saban was trying to do in the overall scheme. It was not in our interest to score fast. Furthermore, when we got a good lead we did not need to continue to force the action. A classic example was the 2009 Championship and to some extint this years NC as well. For what we were and how we wanted to play McElwain was perfect. He called one bad game in all his time- AU 2010. In his defense we won more games and more NC than any other team in the country during his tenure. I really think the best game he called was the 2010 Arky game. We were beat all over the place but we had just enough to escape with a victory that was good coaching/play calling. I do not blame the SC loss or the LSU loss of last year on play calling…we just didn’t play at SC and fell asleep on D vs. LSU in 2010. His play calling in LSU I was ok if we made the FG’s and maybe, just maybe did not let Maze throw it.

If Auburn was in New Mexico and we never played them I would still hate them and their dumb coach and their cheating players.

by 5026 on Jan 16, 2012 3:59 PM CST up reply actions

I see what your saying, but...

I think you need to punch it in the endzone after a time consuming drive. A long drive in and of itself only accomplishes so much. TDs are always better than FGs. It’s that much easier for our defense to lay their ears back and go after the QB when they don’t have to be concerned that a big play can get the other team back in the game.

But I do think McElwain was a good OC overall.

And he might have even been restrained a little by Saban.

I was a critic of McElwain's, guilty.

The vast majority of the time, he was very good and I will freely admit I was overly critical of him on a few occasions.
