Around SBN: Trent Richardson Interviews Fellow Brown Brandon Weeden

New Alabama offensive coordinator Doug Nussmeier not only will be replacing Jim McElwain on a coaching staff for the second time, but the two served three years together on the same Michigan State staff from 2003-05.

Linehan was the Spartans' quarterbacks coach. McElwain was the assistant head coach and coached wide receivers and special teams. Also on that coach was Alabama offensive line coach Jeff Soutland, who coached the Spartans' offensive line from 2000-2006.

Who is Doug Nussmeier? Here's a look at the background of Alabama's new offensive coordinator | al.com

Well, if we're bringing back Lance Thompson over a bridge everyone thought was burned makes sense we'll target an OC with previous experience working with current assistants. We'll have more on him later, but for now I think this is a great hire for Alabama. We weren't looking for anyone to fundamentally change the way play offensively, just someone who is a good recruiter, can develop QBs/WRs, and generally mesh well with the rest of the staff as far as game planning/execution is concerned. Sounds like he fits the bill to me.

Chemistry on the staff is important.

Boy I can remember when coaches at Bama didn’t even talk to each other.

If Auburn was in New Mexico and we never played them I would still hate them and their dumb coach and their cheating players.

I can think of quite a few staffs

that seemed disfunctional. Dubose’s and Shula’s would top my list.

Major

Applewhite was too soon of a hire. Even than, Saban is quick to admit to a mistake.

by Apeekrtr on Jan 16, 2012 4:57 PM CST up reply actions

It wasn't even a mistake.

Saban had very little time to hire anyone, and Applewhite looked like a rising star…it was really the best he could do at the time. As soon as the season ended, though, he sent Applewhite packing, and hired the type of coach he really wanted. Simple as that.

True. But he had only a month to hire before signing day.

Also, not all his recruits have panned out, especially from 2007, but he’s still the best recruiter.

Based on thE talent on hand

Our offenses have failed to scintillate. What has happened to the 74 4-star wideouts we’ve signed, for example?

Burton burns is top-notch, but I wouldn’t give “star assistant” props to any other offensive assistant. (stoutland might earn it with time.). We are Alabama. We should be able to get whoever we want.

The article neglects to mention

that Linehan was Saban’s OC at Miami the first year. Also, Linehan’s biggest influence was Dennis Erickson, who also influenced McElwain. I guess based upon the post, won’t be running Sarkisian’ offense.

I still have a problem with thompson!

Per the Knoxville News Sentinel, Thompson told a crowd earlier in Knoxville of Saban, “He ain’t getting any more of my (recruits).”

Kiffin added, “Nick Saban (Alabama’s coach) should have started his press conference (Wednesday) by saying, ‘Our great class that we signed … I’d really like to thank Lance (Thompson) because Lance signed eight of those guys.’”

I had this sent to me by these inbreds up here back in 09. Oh and Go to Hell TN!

The bad part of this today is...

I had to spend the whole day in Knoxville at my daughters endocrinologist and nephrologist. We were eating at the Mellow Mushroom before we headed home and she said she felt dirty. I asked here why and she said all the orange vol stuff everywhere made her stomach hurt! We then said Roll Tide and hi-fived each other!
Actually a pretty good day considering her A1C went down a whole point!

I’ve been fighting that battle for nearly 23 years. Takes a lot of dedication and support to keep it in check and it sounds like she’s got both. Good on ya, Dad!

Proud of her in a big way.

She was diagnosed with type 1 just before her 9th birthday in 2005. She is now 15 and has finally come to terms with being diabetic and celiac. A lot has happened considering she has been living with me for most of the last year.
She has been through a lot, but is doing what she should.

Acceptance is a big part of being successful with it.

I was 12 when I was diagnosed and was fortunate to have good diabetic educators and a good support system.

The one thing about which I remain stubborn is the pump. My doctors and family have been trying to persuade me for years to get one, but it’s just not for me. Besides, my A1C is 5.9 without it so they really don’t have a good argument.

by TiderInTN on Jan 16, 2012 8:28 PM CST up reply actions

Hells yes on the 5.9 w/o pump!

Most seem to think the answer is the pump. Ash, my daughter, has been doing so much better without it. The pump may make things a little more easy, but not so much better.
She does the pens and hs done very well with it.

I think the AR game will be...

a little different that ‘10. They’re losing some key players on both sides of the ball, especially at WR.

Not that we aren’t losing some, but I’m more confident in our backups than I am in theirs.

by TiderInTN on Jan 17, 2012 12:20 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah

We were supposed to be an offensive juggernaut in ‘10 with McElroy, Mark, Trent, and Julio all coming back. This was supposed to offset any defensive attrition. In reality, our offense is geared to play off of our smothering defense. Looking back, we weren’t all that bad. Just a few mental lapses in the secondary on key plays that proved pivotal. This was due to lack of experience and maturity. The S. Carolina game was bit of an anomaly with Garcia playing pro bowl qb. Then we had all that off season glamour and expose’. We let the barns back by probably playing scoreboard coupled by a couple of “never usually happens” bounces and sure handed Trent dropping one in the end zone.
Hopefully, with Lester and Miliner coming back will provide the leadership back there to guys that would already have started some place else and have been learning the system. Jesse Willliams may be of great improvement along with Square. Nico Johnson will be there and hopefully Mosley’s injury will be overcome. It looks to me like a reload type of situation with the talent on hand and coming in. If someone steps up as a leader, unlike in ’10, where Hightower self admittedly confessed there were situations he could have done things differenty if for him not losing some confidence in himself from his not feeling 100%. Forever rose colored, I guess.
