University of Alabama star Dre Kirkpatrick was arrested early Tuesday morning in Florida for marijuana possession, according to an arrest report from the Manatee County Sheriff's Department.

Kirkpatrick, who announced at a press conference last week that he would leave school early to enter the NFL Draft, was charged with possessing less than 20 grams of cannabis and released on $120 bond.

If

Andre Smith can have an offseason full of fail and still go #6 overall….

Dre still goes in the top 15 or so (I have no idea what his true value is in regards to what actual NFL scouts think, but this seems to be the consensus).

andre smith had a bad pro day and did some weird stuff at the combine.

dre just broke the law and spent a night in jail. whether or not you believe it should be illegal, it still is. breaking the law > showing up overweight to a pro day.

andre smith is a bad correlation

I am

taking former NFL player Lomas Brown’s word on that, who said that at least 50 percent smoke marijuana and that was probably 3 or 4 years ago.

I am not saying it doesn’t hurt him overall, I am simply saying it is not going to effect him that much.

by Apeekrtr on Jan 17, 2012 4:01 PM CST up reply actions

and im saying look at players like

Laveranues Coles
Marvin Austin
Jimmy Smith

all of those players had run ins with the law or public displays of lack of character. dre made a bad decision last night that could very well cost him serious money, especially in terms of bonus cash. the good thing dre has going for him is the combine and pro day are still ahead. he still has a chance to talk to teams about what happened and wow them with his skills.

If I were an NFL gm

I’d be a helluva lot more concerned about “fat and doesn’t care” than about “busted with < 1/2 oz. of pot.” Night and day more concerned. Whether it’s against the law is extraneous if he’s not locked up, as he won’t be.

Slightly over-nthusiastic partying one week after winning a devastating national championship game that well deserves celebrating is not a hanging offense in the NFL, and will not e likely to cause a gm who needs a lockdown corner to pass uonthe best one on the board. Unlike Andre, dre has shown every sign of being dedicated to football.

by glen55 on Jan 17, 2012 4:28 PM CST up reply actions

too bad you arent an NFL GM.

what he did is illegal. thankfully dre doesnt have any prior issues like this, but this kind of stuff gets you suspended from the NFL and into jail. it means the people you associate yourself with are also suspect. GMs dont want to invest a significant amount of money with a player that could just as easily pass a drug test and go to waste. we know that the odds of that happenign with dre are small, but GMs dont know that. Its the same reason janoris jenkins is so low on peoples boards. he could be the most talented CB in the draft, but his issues have cost him dearly. dre wont fall that hard, and maybe not at all. but this is a much bigger deal than coming to the combine over weight.

Gms aren't law-enforcement officials

One pot possession bust is simply not a big deal, either to the law where it is about 1% worse than a traffic ticket, or to an employer. Repeated offenses are a very different story. It’s the every-dog-gets-one-bite principle.

This will be a very minor factor in the draft.

by glen55 on Jan 17, 2012 4:56 PM CST up reply actions

Except the league has very specific substance abuse policies.

You don’t do your team a lot of good while suspended.

In my opinion

A one-time possession bust the weekend after the biggest celebration moment of a young guy’s life does not really differentiate him from other kids and is not a huge information point regarding his chances of running afoul of the league’s drug laws in the future. As I’ve already said, multiple,e offenses are a very different story.

We’re just talking now, and we’ll see this spring but this is not a big deal IMO if it remains an isolated event.

I don't think it will hurt Dre that much

mostly because he is in the top two CBs available in the Draft and this is not an exceptionally deep CB draft, but NFL teams do care.
Marino slid, because of rumored off the field drug issues but mostly because that was the deepest QB draft in history. When in doubt take the guy without the drug rumors.
BJ raji, Percy Harvin, Todd Marinovich, Justin Harrison all slid due to off the field drug related issues in recent years.
As you stated earlier, GMs don’t want their 1st round shut down corner suspended.

He was gonna be a top 7 pick before, and he still will be. If not, it’ll be because he didn’t do well at his pro day (not much of a chance of that). Maybe he’ll need to have an answer ready for a couple of extra questions during the interview process, but this won’t cost him even one slot of draft position. I can see that several here don't know a lot about the NFL.

There are teams who won’t draft Dre now. Period. They will literally take him off their board. Now, does that mean every team will? No, of course not- but this will absolutely cost him draft position. There is no question about that. This is a league that has suffered with some major image problems in recent years, and Roger Goodell is more than serious about changing that.

There is a reason that Tebow is now the most admired athlete in our country. A lot of people are just sick of the way many of these guys act.

Especially disconcerting given Coach Saban’s praise at the presser about Dre’s character and the way he has represented the program and school. I am sure this was not an issue when he was on the team, but it still reflects on character when he gets arrested less than a week after he leaves school. Legalizing it *IS* the answer.

The government has no mandate to criminalize consensual behavior, and War on Drugs has only made a black market that is very profitable for drug dealers. It’s also worth noting that had Kirkpatrick celebrated his big win with a fifth of Jack Daniels or double cheeseburger (both vices that have much higher health risks in this country), none of us would even be talking about this.

Yes, it’s still illegal right now, so Kirkpatrick made a poor decision allowing himself to get caught, but this incident should not be taken as evidence of the evils of recreational drug use. If anything, it highlights the stupidity of our nation’s current drug stance.

They were driving down the wrong side of the road

I would not have wanted to be in their path that night on the street. Their judgements / reactions were evidently influenced by something. One would have to conclude it was the pot. While pot may not be known for making one violent, it certainly makes people stupid. Working with 17/18 year olds every day, I see the results of pot, alcohol, and harder drugs in lives that are diminished, some beyond repair. I don’t know all of the answers, and I don’t think the problem is going away. However, when players like Dre,a hero to many young people, get arrested for illegal activity, it sends the wrong message.

That's true,

at least under circumstances where a driver’s judgment is not impaired by weed or something like that, but just because alcohol is worse doesn’t make any arguments in weed’s favor – it just says we need to be doing more to crack down on drunk drivers.

There's a distinction here that is overlooked.

“Recreational drugs” is a broad term. Most of them are deadly and even if one argues that it’s not the government’s business what you do behind closed doors it cannot be argued that drug addiction often drives individuals to commit violent or other anti-social acts in order to ensure they can get their “fix.”

Marijuana is on a different plane and although I’m not for legalizing it, I would be in favor of loosening the punishments that users face although dealers and producers should still be punished. Consistent marijuana use reduces brain function over time.

The saddest part in all of this is...

This is America! We should have our liberty! These football players are fantastic athletes and know their bodies well. They should be able to ingest whatever substances they wish as long as they are performing to the on-field standards their employers have.
I watched one of the greatest RBs in the NFL, Ricky Williams, waste his best years not playing because he broke the rules about smoking pot, not because the pot damaged him and that’s bullshit!
Pot does have great medicinal value, especially in post-game pain control and hopefully, some day, this country will get smart and legalize that shit and stop ruining lives over pointless anti-pot laws.

Just because something is illegal doesn’t make it immoral. Segregation and slavery used to be the LAW of the land and surely you want say that is a good thing.

Yes money doesn’t equal character but it does mean you can have a highly functioning and fulfilling life and smoke pot

As for your wife. I don’t hang around such intolerant people

What does the comment about my wife have to do with anything

if it was directed at me?

And guess what slavery was wrong and worth fighting a war over. Not sure everybody feels that way about laws that make it illegal to deal drugs.

In 16 states you have medical cannabis. The laws are changing. Is it ok if it’s legal?

by CrimsonTraveler on Jan 17, 2012 10:17 PM CST reply actions

Most of the pot smoked in those states

has nothing to do with medicine. But, who knows maybe Dre was buying the pot because he thought he could get medical marijuana in Fl. Yeah, that is it. He wasn’t breaking the law, endangering others, encouraging kids to use pot. No, not all. He was just mistaken. He thought he could finally get some relief for his glucoma. Too bad he wasn’t in a right to do pot state.

Oh yes and kids of alcoholics always turn out great. We should stop judging these kids whose lives have very little relation or relevance to the hordes of suburbanites and rednecks who watch them

Kids of alcoholics rarely turn out great

which is one of the major reasons I’m against alcohol. And, I work with kids in the hood. Kids with no daddy, no real future. Who do they look up to? Athletes. Of course most athletes rarely care because they just think of themselves first.

But, yeah every time an athlete does something really stupid it does hurt those kids.

I don't have much to add to what you've already said,

but I’m with you on this one. Regardless of the legality/illegality debate it’s illegal right now, and when athletes flaunt the law it does hurt kids that look up to that person.

THIS.

Whether it “should” be legal or illegal in a year isn’t relevant. It’s illegal now, and he broke the law. That’s being a bad role model. Case closed.

Like I said, inexact analogy.

I was taking issue with:

Sounds like you are more of a pot fan

than Bama fan. Who here is judging pot smokers anyway? Why are you taking such offense to all this? Currently, smoking pot not in one of the 16 states that allow medical mary-j is against the law. That’s a fact. Whether it should be legal or not isn’t the issue. I’m not sure why you referred to all of us as rednecks, and insulted 5026 wife. For someone who doesn’t like people looking down on potheads you sure aren’t doing a good job making a case.

Dre

smoking pot does not equate to a blemish on his character. His judgment, yes, but his character, no. A misdeed is simply that. A pattern of misdeeds might mean there are character issues. Besides, maybe he didn’t inhale.

OK, settle down doomsayers

While this was obviously not a good decision … seriously Dre??? … 20 grams is less than a half ounce, and a half ounce is about the size of a PB&J in a sandwich bag. That’s a misdemeanor amount, not felonious possession with intent to sell. Sorry moral high grounders, but the amount matters.

To my knowledge, Dre has never failed a drug test or been arrested for any other reason. This also matters. While he may fall in the draft, if he interviews well, performs well at the Combine, and obviously stays out of trouble between now and Draft Day, he should still be a mid-first round pick.
