Alabama's 2011 Targets & Catches Stats

The 2011 season may be over but SB Nation's College Football Stats guru Bill Connelly has been hard at work breaking down the data he's been amassing since the start of September. One stat he's been tracking all season has been Targets & Catches and, we're happy to note, he's released the season totals into the wild.

As we explained when Connelly offered the sneak preview of these numbers at mid season, Targets & Catches measure how many times given players are being thrown to, how often they catch those passes and what yardage they earn once they do.

You can find all of the raw numbers on this ginormous public spreadsheet but here are the numbers on the Alabama players organized from the most targeted receiver to the least. Definitions are below the chart and after the jump you'll find the numbers broken down by standard and passing downs.

Alabama Receivers on All Passes
Player Targets Catches Yards Catch Rate YdsPer Target Target % YdsPer Catch
Marquis Maze 87 56 627 64.40% 7.2 23.80% 11.2

Brian Vogler 1 1 6 100% 6 0.30% 6

Targets = receptions plus incompletions targeting a given receiver.

Catches = receptions.

Yards = receiving yards

Catch Rate = catches / targets

Yards Per Target = yards / targets

Target % = the percentage of a team's passes targeting a given receiver.

%SD = the percent of a players targets that came on standard downs.

UPDATE: If you would like to compare Alabama's performance to the rest of the conference, all you need to do is follow this here link over to Team Speed Kills. There you'll find these Target & Catches numbers for all of the SEC.

I am

really beginning to think Brad Smelley is going to get a late round flier in this draft….

Confirms the fact thaqt Norwood and Bell are our go to

receivers next year along with the unknown Carter.

By the way…Harrison Jones = the next Smelley who was the next Dial who was the next Peek.

If Auburn was in New Mexico and we never played them I would still hate them and their dumb coach and their cheating players.

Christion Jones should be named here as well....

Not enough data.

And Jones obviously has good hands but can he run the routes?

Honestly...

…there’s not really enough data on any of these fellas, but I’ve seen more of Jones than I have of Carter, and with the number of receivers CNS prefers to use, I have a strong suspicion we’ll see a good bit of Mr. Jones next season.

That said, as long as we’re winning, I really don’t care who’s carrying the load….

I think we are looking at a future playmaker in Christion Jones.

Ice water ran through his veins after being thrust into the kick returning duty after the Maze injury. You don’t see that kind of confidence in a Freshman a whole lot.

Does anyone have an idea of where Maze will go in the draft?

He’s so small, but I think he could contribute to a team.

Stay thirsty my friends.

I think he will be lucky to be drafted.

Dude's all heart...

…of this, there is no doubt. If I’m sitting around in the 5th round or later, and he’s still on the board, I’m giving him a call (that is, the pretend me that actually can make that call; the real me is prolly the last person he wants a call from on draft day, knowwhuti’msayin?)….

Good for him.

I just don’t see him as an NFL player but who knows.

Slot receiver and KR?

Too small to be an every down guy, but he’s good enough at what he’s good at to get some time. (hooray for redundant sentences).

Yep

4th round and later. Would have helped him if he had a bigger senior season, but he is a slot WR in the NFL and a nice little punt returner to have.

I saw what I needed to see

from Norwood and Bell in the BCSNCG. More of them, please.

Would Bell and Jones share time next year as return guys?

I know Bell can fly, but Jones wasn’t to shabby himself.

Probably.

And once upon a time, we were excited about Dee Hart’s potential to return. So…return game could be fun to watch next year.

i'll have a post up on Team Speed Kills tomorrow

looking at this across the conference but one tidbit y’all might find interesting. maze and rueben randall have identical target and catch numbers (randall has significantly more yards) and they lead the SEC in catch percentage among No.1 receivers.

Norwood

I can’t wait to see him, he really impressed in the BCS game, Jones was nice also

by TideinOklahoma on Jan 17, 2012 11:28 PM CST via mobile reply actions

I would agree

Jones fielding the punts and wasn’t it he that ran the 2nd half kickoff from about 5 yards back to almost the 30? Norwood was trying his best to do a Julio impersonation. I went back through the archives of my posts to see who I predicted as a surprise impact player on offense, hoping that it was him. But no, it was Kenny Bell, who did take that one screen pass in the NC game and made a nifty 30 yard sprint with it.
I think Norwood and Christian Jones handled themselves more maturely in respects to playing on a college field. My impressions of Bell and Blake Sims ( from his earlier appearances in the season ) seem to be impressive raw talent that needs to be honed and to get over that " wow, I’m actually here with the ball in my hands" syndrome. I guess I dare say that is what Saban is partially implying when he’s talking about some kids are at different stages of maturity level when it comes to playing game day collegiately. I think this is where he made one of his “what makes a great hunting dog” analogies.

Now

if we can get this new OC to devolp AJ’s deep ball I think we will be sittin pretty. The O-line is going to be great, EL in the backfeild, and hopefully we can get something outta Duron Carter. AJ to Norwood has a nice ring to it don’t cha think?

by TideinOklahoma on Jan 18, 2012 7:52 AM CST up reply actions

You don't want to know

Even though you probably do by now. It was a crude prank done in public by an Alabama fan against an lsu fan that was passed out. I don’t won’t to go all Gary Danielson and be an old curmudgeon, but I didn’t like it and I think it makes us look bad in about the same vein as the Updyke scandal. Seems like I remember something similiar being done to someone in a dorm room with photos involved back when I was in school. But then it was kind of looked at as being the unfortunate one that passed out a little sooner than everyone else. Like having shaving cream on the face, etc. It did involve genitalia, but was not public like this case. I think they’re after the perp and sex crime charges are now involved. I hate it happened.

by Brad Bowen on Jan 18, 2012 5:55 PM CST up reply actions

It has a nice ring to it.

From what was on display on the 9th, AJ has the potential to do the deep ball thing. He’s composure is what impressed me the most. He also seems to be a genuine humble guy. I actually got him to sign one of my ball caps after the ‘09 spring game. He hung around longer and mingled with the straggling fans longer than anyone. The noteriety he was getting was also probably fun and new to him.
One of the fans in front of me assumed the role of reporter and affronted him with the blunt question of him being underweight. Then I think he was around 190. He didn’t seem a bit turned off and replied that with all the guys we’re recruiting that’s going to play around him, he wasn’t a bit concerned of this being an issue
I intentionally left Duron Carter out of my hopefuls. I’m in the " I’ll believe it when I see it" crowd. But yes, that would be nice if he’s available and is half as good as his dad says he is.
By being a little late on hitting the post button, I’m inadvertently playing into that joke.
