Recruiting: T-Minus 14 Days and Counting!

With just 2 weeks left before the Feb 1 signing day, here are some updates:

The Tide sit at the top team ranking in Scout, Rivals and ESPN. Usually the Tide fair well in one or two, but this is the first time I can remember landing all three at the #1 ranking. This class has a BOATLOAD of talent to rival the 2008 class. Of course we have to see how it plays out on the field, but Saban has a very strong track record to date for translating potential into on-field production.

This will probably go down as one of the less dramatic (please no CK or BC type drama!!!) signing days unless there's some last minute shuffling due to signings we weren't expected to get.

FSU seems to be in the mix much more during the last 2 years with the 2012 class having the 2 biggest prospects probably making a signing day decision between the Tide and the Noles'.

1) Jameis Winston QB (current FSU verbal) - still being HEAVILY pursued by Bama and will have an in-home visit from the Saban coaching contingent, including the new OC. I still have this one as a long shot, based on his comments about bonding with the other FSU verbals at the UA All-America game - but who knows.

2) Eddie Goldman DT - A primary need for the Tide with the loss of Josh Chapman, all reports point to Goldman being a man child who can contribute immediately. He runs a 5.05 40 at 6'4" and 315 lbs. The other FSU vs. Bama battle.

3) Korren Kirven DT - Another DT who seems to be a late pursuit, could lead us to believe that Goldman is cooling on Bama. Another interesting tidbit is Kirven deciding between TN, Va Tech and BAMA. Kirven was hosted by TN last Sunday by one coach Lance Thompson. As I am sure most are aware, it has been speculated that Thompson is headed back to Bama.

4) Dorial Green-Beckham WR - Looking to be an ARKY, Mizzou or TX decision. If he's smart he'll play SEC ball as the jury's still out on the 'Horns.

Newcomers on campus for January enrollment: As previously mentioned in another thread, the following players are already on campus: Ryan Anderson (LB/DE), Deion Belue (DB), Chris Black (WR), Amari Cooper (WR), Travell Dixon (DB), Dillon Lee (LB), Alphonse Taylor (DT/OT), T.J. Yeldon (RB).

Questions

1) Do the early enrollees count against the 25 limit? Do they count back to last year or is there some gray area here? If we have 27 (only one grayshirt confirmed) and we’re still pursuing 4 this has us way over-committed. So how does it work?

2) Are there any rumors of potential non-qualifiers?

3) Who is the “softest” commit?

Sports are a culture's way of getting at 5 or 6 great men... and then assuring that their greatness remains petty.

from what I have read in the past...

1) I think the only advantage for January enrollees is that they get to school early. I have no clue as to how that impacts their eligibility. There’s a 25 limit carried from year to year. If you grayshirt, you are deferring enrollment/scholarship as they haven’t “joined” that signing class. So technically you only sign 25 and the two or whatever # of grayshirts would count against the class/year they actually start receiving the scholly. They would push to count against next year’s class.

2) Darren Lake seems to be getting some press as to “making sure he takes care of his classes.” Other than Darren, grades have been a relative non-factor for this class. We usually don’t hear about that until really late in the process anyway.

As was with Duron – he signed the LOI but we didn;t find out until the season started that he wasn’t going to play.

Again, here's the NCAA Rule:
15.5.6.3.2 Recruited Student-Athlete Entering After Fall Term, Aided in First Year. [FBS/FCS] A student-athlete recruited (per Bylaw 15.02.8) by the awarding institution who enters after the first term of the academic year and immediately receives institutional financial aid (based in any degree on athletics ability) shall be an initial counter for either the current academic year (if the institution’s annual limit has not been reached) or the next academic year. The student-athlete shall be included in the institution’s total counter limit during the academic year in which the aid was first received. (Revised: 1/15/11 effective 8/1/11)

FWIW 247sports has Alabama #1 too

As for drama, I wouldn’t mind some Jeoffrey Pagan type drama. B)

My two cents:

1) Jameis Winston QB (current FSU verbal) – there is an excellent chance that he could go to the MLB a la Desmond Jennings. Reports are that he has a tryout with the Padres today (1/18). Depending on how he does, we might know his intentions a little more clearly. He also bonded with many Tide verbals (Yeldon, Anderson, Ragland) at the Ala-Miss All-Star game. I’m just sayin’…

2) Eddie Goldman DT – a big man 6-3, 310 5-star from Washington, DC. Would be perfect in the Kirby Smart scheme.

3) Korren Kirven DT – very good pass rusher. I have heard he visits T-town this weekend.

4) Dorial Green-Beckham WR – I would be beyond shocked but thrilled if he landed at Alabama.

4) Kwon Alexander LB – word is he is still on the board. Injured senior year but still a 4-star. Was in Tuscaloosa this past weekend for an official visit. Supposed to announce on NSD but did he wait too long?

Wow, thanks for that.

I dream of Beckham but since he’s cleary not going to ’Bama, he better go to Mizzou.

I got some more info on DGB - AFTER I posted of course.

Seems like the Sooners have entered the fray. Some predictors are thinking Hogs have the best chance, but we’ll see.

If we get any more commits

we are going to have to “Taylor” someone else and to be honest the press could get bad and hurt us in the future. My feeling is just hold on to what we have and it is more than good enough.

If Auburn was in New Mexico and we never played them I would still hate them and their dumb coach and their cheating players.

+1

That’s why I don’t think we Kwon is really in play. My money is on Kirven and/or Goldman. Kirven could be the go to since Jenkins went to GA.

Right. If the new rule is already in effect,

then it is 25 from December 1 to August 1. That sounds like we may have to Taylor our classa bit more.

I like what you did there.

And agree. The article on Taylor revealed that he, his coaches, and our coaches not only read the articles but the comments on them. Whether one agrees or not with the practice, we’ve still got to manage the media perception carefully.

If we Taylor too many players, it

could hurt future recruiting.

Goldman and

to a lesser extent, Kirven are worth having to “Taylor” somebody. Either of them would be major, major additions. Green-Beckham and Winston would be too, but not at areas of such pressing need…and we ain’t getting Green-Beckham, anyway. Winston is an extreme longshot, and even Goldman I doubt we can land now after Coach Sal’s departure. But hopefully LT’s arrival will counter-balance with Kirven.

FYI: Justin Taylor has NOT de-committed

He really wants to go to Alabama and would be a fine addition. Sadly, he had an injury and missed his senior season. Greyshirting means he would not be able to enroll or practice with the team until December. The kid hasn’t stepped on a field in over a year and he is just anxious to get back out there. I can’t blame him for looking for other opportunities to play.

Unfortunately, Taylor is surrounded by Bama haters who are not making this easier. His high school coach is former South Carolina Gamecock Stanley Pritchett who is running to every media outlet badmouthing the Tide instead of being supportive to his player. Also the AJC is very pro-UGA and they resent Saban signing all these Georgia kids away.

One more point on Taylor

If one of Bama’s signees does not academically qualify, then Taylor will not have to wait to join the team. You may recall this happened to Harrison Jones a few years ago when Belue did not have the grades.

by CB969 on Jan 19, 2012 9:58 AM CST up reply actions

I don't know if that is true.

Because of the SEC’s new rule, we can only sign 25 in a given year. If one of those fails to qualify, I think the fallback is “tough shit”. This is why the cap is a killer. It removes flexibility that we’ve always had in the past.

by Slice of Life on Jan 19, 2012 10:33 AM CST up reply actions

We may not let all of the ones with questionable grades sign...

In the past you could sign these kids and if they didn’t qualify you were ok… Now because of the 25 signee limit, if you lose a guy to grades you essentially lose that spot in the class.

by BamaBR549 on Jan 19, 2012 11:41 AM CST up reply actions

i guess if a guy is borderline...

eligible academics-wise, before you let him sign, I guess you just have to get him in junior college to get his affairs in order, knowing that you can’t sign him until next year, ala Travell Dixon and Deion Belue, and knowing that you risk losing him to somebody else who swoops in and steals the fruits of your efforts. Seriously, with us at 26, if Goldman says “Roll Tide”, what do we do? We have to make room for him somehow.

by 13 Rings on Jan 19, 2012 5:18 PM CST up reply actions

All great examples of why I think...

that scholarship limits do not, and were not intended to, inure to the benefit of the student-athlete. They were and are a successful strategy by the NCAA to impose an artificial parity on a historically and naturally disparate system, in an effort to increase market share of sports eyeballs.

How does it benefit the student-athlete when they can’t go to the school of their choice? Maybe the NCAA can say “oh, by limiting football scholarships, that means more of the higher-quality athletes are forced to attend less-competitive schools, giving these athletes a greater opportunity for playing time, thereby increasing their chances of playing professionally.” Thanks, Mom.

...in the SEC.

It’s not an NCAA regulation. Though we all know that noone from other conferences would ever sign more than 25 in a given class.

IIRC, back in the days of DuBose and Tubberville there was a proposal to go from 85 from to 75, with the possibility of 75+20 partial scholarships.
