How many of you are sick of the "Bama fans are weirdos"

chant from other fan bases because two morons who are UA fans, out of probably hundreds of millions over the last 180 years, did really stupid things? I would like all of our faithful readers to post here any highly disreputable fans or grads of any other college or university.

I will start with a student who attended my own undergraduate alma mater, dear old Spring Hill College in Mobile. SHC was founded by the Jesuits in 1830 and prides itself on providing its students with a top nnotch, liberal arts education amidst a socially responsible and ethical religious environment. However, that did not stop PATRICIA KRENWINKLE from being a student there. For the younger readers, Trish was a Charles Manson disciple and murderer.

My brother was a Deputy Sheriff in Mobile at the time of her arrest and said she was the most hirsute person he had ever seen and that she never wore ladies' undergarments of any type. Now, wouldn't it be reasonable to think that the murdering and hairy flashing were encouraged by or due to the guidance of the Jesuits or that they "attract" that kind of person?

If you know of any other similar illustrious grads or fans, please add them here. Also, my browser won't let me keep paragraphs for some unknown reason.

FanPosts are just that; posts created by the fans. They are in no way indicative of the opinions of SBN and the authors of Roll Bama Roll.

I'm not totally sure what your point is,

My point was intended to be

that since all of the jealous rival fan bases want to impugn our integrity by the unrelated criminal acts of two" fans," let’s look at other colleges the same way. If the college has been in biz longet than a year, it probably has a student or “fan” who has done something dumb. Really, they should be calling this a law enforcement related problem. One guy had been a Texas State trooper and the other had a sheriff cousin. Every bit as logical. Makes much more sense than celebrating what a tremendous young man Barrett Jones is, with his mission trips and coming back to play for the U he loves, when he could make millions next year, volunteering tirelessly for the tornado relief. These are the actions of an in-school PLAYER!

The difference is that Updyke's actions were clearly related to his obsession with Alabama.

And the teabagger was there in New Orleans because of Alabama. If he had done this back in BFE on a random Saturday night to some random drunk person, it would not have been an Alabama-related story, but that’s not what happened.

Of course there are crazy people in any group that’s large enough. And having a fan base as big as Alabama’s means we’re going to have more crazies than smaller fanbases. But unless there’s more to the story, there doesn’t seem to be a logical reason to connect the Manson woman’s crimes to her time at SHC.

God bless our Dark Lord.

by CarrotTop4 on Jan 21, 2012 12:37 PM CST up reply actions

the point as that there is no connection--that was to illustrate the ridiculousness of logic

Certainly, the Jesuit brothers do not endorse, encourage or condone that sort of behavior. In fact, they are committed to the thou shalt not kill stuff. Neither did Bama do anthing to encourage, incite, etc., these two. It’s no more in any way causally related than Jody Foster is somehow responsible for Reagan being shot. She obviously did nothing to attract Hinckley and doesn’t even like guys. I had two stalkers in my life and I did nothing other than look young and pretty at the time and I do not think I am one iota to blame for them trying to break into my house, etc. They were clearly obsessed with me, as Hinckley was with Foster. The point of this post was to try to humorously point out the complete lack of logic and reason in the jealous people, who are just looking for something , anything to put down UA, by listing where, say, Al Capone went to school, if indeed he did.

I disdain Bammers that can't use the "reply" function.

Kidding.

adeleswims, when you’re dealing with fanbases crazed enough to “purchase” players because they’re so desperate for their team to win, I’d say there is enough “crazy” to go around. Imagine that oft-played scenario…
1) Booster A loves his team.
2) Booster A then puts the existence of his beloved team in jeopardy by “aiding” them.
Now THAT is misguided enthusiasm.

I get it...

But why bother? We are now officially hated by rivals and others who aren’t winning, They will continue to find and air stuff as long as we’re relevant.

If we were irrelevant, you’d hear less about our crazy fans and more about some other school.

The Bear preached class and Saban wants his players to be held to a higher standard.

Not all of our players are Barrett Jones. But I believe most of our players, including those from troubled backgrounds, try to become better people. And they are lucky. Imagine if Rolando or Trent had gone to Florida or Theug U?

But I hate is Alabama fans who feel class and standards don’t apply to them. Harvey Updyke is mentally ill, but Brian Downing is a spoiled brat, it seems, if that was his tweet about having a rich daddy. But it’s not just Downing, it’s the rabble who also participated. The guy should have been left alone or helped. Minus the teabag it’s still wrong, but not that bad. It got progressively worse. Once it was apparent that Downing wanted to teabag, the others should have stopped him.

Public perception is one thing, but my anger is from the inside, not the outside. Bama fans who fail to attempt to live up to the standards that we pride our team and ourselves bring the program down. That Updyke could get a ticket for the BCSNCG is not problematic because he has yet to be found guilty. Should he and Brian be found guilty, then permaban from al UA sports events and related events, including awards ceremonies and the trophy display at Walmart.

I am not sick of it at all, because that means we are winning

Stop winning and you can teabag anyone you want and no one cares. Don’t get me wrong, I am not condoning what these two idiots did and it would be nice if some of our fringe fans would try to act with a little class, but there are always going to be these guys. Like you said, out of hundreds of millions of fans…. two.

Just 20 years ago before social media, 24 hour news and the internet in general you would have never heard of the teabagger. You probably would have heard of Updyke but only in the State of Alabama. Times are changing and the information age makes it nearly impossible for an idiot to hide, espicially when your team is winning.

Just saw this story on Yahoo!

Moses, a longtime Bay Area resident who is from New Orleans, said they were wearing the Saints colors and prepared for some good-natured ribbing.

Instead, he tells a horror story of fear and humiliation when his daughters asked him why he didn’t do anything to stop the hulking 49ers fans who yelled vulgarities and threw footballs at them, screamed in their faces and called their mother a whore.

"The hostility and threats of violence were a constant throughout our experience," Moses said in a letter to the San Francisco Chronicle, one that launched some soul-searching by city officials and led to some 49ers fans to apologize on behalf of their city.

"Every other word from dozens of fans around us was an f-bomb shouted at the top of their lungs," Moses said. "There were seven or eight large 30- to 35-year-old guys directly behind us who cursed and threatened us the entire game." He turned to ask them to tone it down in front of his girls and they yelled: "Do not turn around again! Do not ever turn around again."

He was afraid that if the fans saw him calling or texting security, the men would harm his daughters.

I grew up in the Bay Area, and this situation isn't merely an "isolated" incident

Let it be known that I’ve been a lifelong East-bay fan for sports: meaning I’m down with the A’s, Raiders, and Warriors. Read: I dislike, with great passion your average SF Giants’ (baseball) and 49-ers’ fan.

The article states that the unruly 49-er fans acted out of control for various reasons mostly involving “not playing in the playoffs for a long time”. That’s bull-puck to the highest degree. People can talk all day about “Raider Nation” and the perceived “bands of thugs” as their average fan. That’s total BS, and mostly is a misperception based on the Raiders’ stint as home-team in the Los Angeles-area. The fans who frequent Oakland Coliseum or Oracle Arena are mostly mild-mannered “family” folk and have been for a very, very long time. Every fan base has their idiots- but the Giants and the 49-ers have a higher idiot-ratio per population density than the average fan base.

I’ve seen Dodgers’ fans lit on fire in the stands during games at Candlestick, I’ve seen Bears’ fans cars get squashed and sent over an embankment at the same stadium. Beer is thrown, spewing spit is a pastime, and a constant hurling of epithets, hate-speech, and challenges to fight is your average experience if you’re not a 49-er or Giants’ fan at a game.

And San Francisco is gay as all get out! I actually have property in that city!!!!!!!

It’s not a small wonder that when traveling to away games, certain 49-er and Giants’ fans get their asses KICKED. They don’t know when enough is enough, and they sure as hell can’t leave well-enough alone.

My take: that Downing dude ain’t got much sense. He seems to not have been raised right. Updyke? That clown is a looney-toon who needs professional help on at least 3 levels- purely for his own good. What I’ll say in Downing’s case is that he should face the full-brunt of the law and hopefully hires himself a great defense attorney. His behavior isn’t the the worst I’ve heard of, as a fan of sports- but let’s just hope this is and was an isolated event for the man and hopefully his life can recover from such a circumstance. Updyke must face the consequences of justice, his punishment (if guilty) should directly reflect his crimes. And if he’s clinically off his rocker, let’s hope he gets the help he deserves and needs.

Unfortunately,

too many people think having freedom means freedom to do or say whatever you want. However, neither the Constitution nor the laws of the land support such an amoral misinterpretation of freedom. If Brian is as rich as I’ve heard, he could unfortunately buy justice, only reinforcing his misinterpretation. Hopefully, he’ll do time, but not 25+ years. Feel sorry for his child in the photograph.
