A Tale of Two Coaches

Will Blackwell, LSU guard, interviewed at Senior Bowl:"I haven't talked to (LSU) Coach (Les) Miles," he said. "I haven't spoken with him. I'd be interested to see what he had to say but I haven't had any contact with him recently. I've kind of tried to stay away and keep my mind off of it. I've been at home in West Monroe and not in Baton Rouge. It has been tough to get a hold of him. I'm finished. He doesn't need me anymore."

Nick Saban at the Senior Bowl

Saban sought out Upshaw after practice. Upshaw stopped short of hugging Saban because he was drenched in sweat and he told Saban he didn't want to mess up his nice suit. Saban smiled and asked his former star linebacker if he had a good practice. Upshaw responded, "Yes, sir." Then he asked, "Do I look slim?" Upshaw said he wants to get down to 265 pounds, but he's not there yet. Saban smiled and said, "Yeah." Upshaw said, "I know I look slim, and it feels good, too."

Star-divide

Honestly, as much as I hear about how Les Miles is the "player's coach" while Nick Saban is the cold-hearted coach who only cares about winning...hopefully little stories like this can get rid of that image. Anyway, sure am glad we got Nick Saban as our head coach...

Cold Hearted

I can’t remember all the cold hearted talk about Saban when he was at LSU, but since he is at Bama suddenly he is this monster. I do remember the story about one LSU alum telling a Bama alum that you know he’s (Saban) an sob,and the response is yes well he’s OUR sob now! I for one couldn’t be happier about it. While I do think LM is a great coach, sometimes his sideline mental lapses would drive me crazy if he were doing it while wearing Crimson/white. Thank you Coach Saban for being who you are good and bad! People always attack anything they fear, and with Saban at the helm of the Tide we are once again something to fear!

I wonder...

…if you would still think Miles was a ‘great coach’ if he were at, say, Ole Miss, without a DC like Chavis.

I'm off the mind that he's a lot like Mike Shula

His 4 years at Okie St were basically identical to Shulas. 28-21 vs 26-23. I don’t think LSU would be where it is had Saban not come in first and laid a great foundation, I thought that before Saban was at Alabama though. Give Miles his due though, He hasn’t screwed it up and in fact has kept it going pretty nicely.

He hasn't?

I know they’ve won a few things, but don’t you think CNS would have as many titles as Coach Bryant had he stayed there? We’ll see what Miles does with the “can’t lose” bunch he has coming back next season….

Wait, what?

You’re saying that if Saban had stayed at LSU, you think he would have 6 NCs now?

hmmm… I would say 5 at the most, though that would still be pretty darn amazing in a 9 year period.

God bless our Dark Lord.

Just because he hasn't maximized the potential doesn't mean he's screwed it up

Tons of talented kids still want to play there, they are always in the discussion, and they are always a tough game. Until it turns into the sad shape that is UT football, I’d say he hasn’t “screwed up”. I do agree he hasn’t achieved what he probably should have in that situation though.

Miles has even said himself

that he surrounds himself with people who know what they are doing. He’s a great recruiter, he hires some great coordinators and assistants. That’s the secret to his success.

Well that, and it’s quite easy to drive fast when you are handed the keys to a corvette.

I think the thesis of the post was to contrast the interactions between the two coaches and their players. Coach Saban seems to love his players. Certainly he expects a lot from them and certainly he is critical of their performances, but this should be expected of coaches at this level. Isn’t this called tough love. I believe the same could be said of Coach Bryant. I will refrain from passing judgement on Miles based on one players comments, but I doubt he has the same level of respect from his players as the player-coach relationship is quite different between the two coaches.

They are very different styles

Saban is more of the tough-love, mentor, “I’m not going to be your best friend but it’s for your own developement” style. Miles is “one of the boys.” I think both get and deserve the respect and admiration of their players. The difference is that the media paints Saban to be a cold-hearted, win-at-all-cost scrooge, while they paint Miles as Mr. Fun Buddy-Buddy Guy, always there to give his players and heart-warming hug. When in fact, neither fits either portrayal 100% of the time.
