Settle a debate I had with myself: Is VaTech a top tier program?
I concluded they’re probably akin to Georgia. Decent team every year, which counts for something. In a shitty conference (ACC) or division (SEC East this year), both schools are competitive. But both schools wet the bed under real competition.

I see what you’re saying, they’ve historically been dreadful, but so was Florida State and Miami, and Florida wasn’t anything to write home about, either.
A lot of this depends on your definition of “elite.” They certainly don’t have the same history as Alabama, USC, Oklahoma, Texas, Nebraska, Ohio State, Michigan, or the like, but they’ve been pretty damn good over the past 20 years or so, as I indicate below. Some (a lot? most?) of this came from playing in a relatively weak conference, which is why we have beauty contest polls.

Saban would also say...
that his goal every year is to win the conference, and not the national championship. He says that winning the conference is something that the team can control, whereas winning the beauty contest that gets one invited to the BCSNCG is NOT. By this standard, Virginia Tech would appear to be a top tier team.

I guess it all comes down to your definition of “top tier.” Like someone said above, they are pretty consistently very good, and win their conference a lot, but they’ve not yet been the best.

If I may also point out
Look at how many of those “ACC Champions” titles are with 3 or so losses. That kills me. SEC champs rarely have that many, if I recall correctly. I think that is a hint in the difference between the conferences.
