'Cause that's how we do.

I’m pulling for Clemson in spite of Dabo.
Clemson has good Bama connections and the guys at STS are passionate and insightful about college football. But Dabo needs to get his head out of his ass or he’s another DuBose or Shula.

Read STS.
They’re happy about a lot of things this season. But they’re angry, too. They have legitimate issues with Dabo as a head coach.

I'll take your word for it
Didn’t really realize he had issues, certainly not of the Debose and Shula like.
by d12 on Jan 4, 2012 7:38 PM CST up reply actions
The comparison to our two coaches is mine, not STS’.
Their problems with Dabo is that he is soft. The conditioning program is weak, they don’t have physical practices, have their starters practice against each other enough, focus on fundamentals, overall the O line is underachieving, their defense is terrible at tackling. They recruit well and have excellent schemes, but the defensive scheme may be too complex for their players. Plus they have Danny Pearman.
So, my guess is if Dabo has only this season to how for on his resume, he’ll wind up like DuBose and Shula.

I would let them know that we don't tackle to the ground past camp
so I am not sure if thats a big deal or not.
So do we tackle to the ground
in spring training, A Game, fall camp, scrimmages, but not for regular season and bowl preparation?

as I understand it, this is correct
which is why its so amazing that the technique is so good. Considering how many injuries occur as the tackle goes to the ground, this makes sense though.
Money, man, money.
Miami is not a cheap town. And it’s not like Auburn with a Lake or Central West Virginia have the alumni base of, say, Stanford :)

Good point.
Still, you’d think even if just their respective season ticket holders made the trip it would come closer to filling the place than this.
Another thing is the distance
people always forget how long the state of Florida is. Driving from Atlanta to Miami is almost the same thing as driving Atlanta to Dallas, which is virtually 1/3 the way across the country.
Yep. 10 hour drive to the Orange Bowl in 1999

20 years ago they thought they would dominate a basketball conference, only to find out that they would drop to their level. Funny now, I bet just about every FSU fan wishes that they had taken the SEC up on the offer when they had the chance.

that was a Harbaugh / Carrol reference. With Stanford already up big, they went for two late in the game to give them 50 points (iirc). After the game, Pete Carroll ran up to Harbaugh and asked him “what’s your deal?” to which Harbaugh allegedly responded “what’s your deal?”

A little shocked at the score
but that is the way ot has been with Clemson…hot or cold. Had they gone in for that score before the fumble they’d be leading now as it is the game is basically over.
But, Clemson is not firing Dabo just yet. After all he did win the ACC. However, at some point if they really want a shot at the NC they will need to get more physical and learn to play D. Not sure they will do that under Dabo.
But, I do like Dabo. Liked him as a player and as a person. Probably going to make a real fine AD some day.
If Auburn was in New Mexico and we never played them I would still hate them and their dumb coach and their cheating players.
thats a great point 50
I never consider the administrative end, but you have a great point. He has a reputation of being great with alumni, and that’s huge in the admin realm.
I don’t think they’ll fire him for this game.
I was happy to hear that he was hired to be their coach. He inherited problems from Bowden. He’s made some good changes. He needs to make some more or I think he’ll be like Shula, a nice guy in over his head, gone after four good years with only one good year.

If this bowl season has taught me anything
its that this spread bullshit has its days numbered. The people that don’t get it will continue to run it, but people in the know are doing their best to get away from it as soon as possible. You simply can’t play consistent championship caliber football running this garbage. To put it mildly, the same thing that’s won has always won. More specifically, ball control offense, and suffocating defense is what wins. This spread bullshit only beats other spread teams.
People always said that about the wishbone during bowl games.
When teams had a month to prepare for it it was tougher to dominate; even for us. If you got far behind – forget about it.

OU and Texas have a longstanding rivalry...
but have not traditionally been in the same conference. They were both in the Southwest Conference from 1915-1919, when Oklahoma left for the Big 8. They weren’t in the same conference again until the Big 12 formed in 1996, and have remained together since.
So, roughly 24 years in the same conference (currently 15), and 77 in different conferences.
Thirteen.
I honestly am convinced that we are headed to 16 team leagues
and it only a matter of 3 or 4 years before it happens. The question with Oklahoma, Okie St., Kansas, and Kstate, is do they stick with Texas or wind up with the PAC 12?

Not with Mack Brown at the helm
Texas has top 5 recruiting classes almost every year since his arrival and 1 NC to show for it, and that game was not a result of coaching but VY taking the team on his back. MB can recruit but not develop talent.
Brown was smart enough to initiate a change
and that to me speaks volumes, plus, he brought in Manny Diaz, I think he actually is one of the coaches that gets that the world has changed.

switching to a pro set offense
focusing on defense, and getting rid of this spread bullshit. I think it requires different personel, which is exactly what Muschamp is doing at Florida.

Clemson spent way too much time on South Beach
This is unbelievably bad.
Odds on Kevin Steele being unemployed
after this game?
I could see him being scapegoated
but in reality, its not entirely his fault. Certainly turnovers played a part, combined with the bullshit offense that Clemson is employing.
by BamaThrasher on Jan 4, 2012 10:28 PM CST up reply actions
Gave up over 26 pts/gm
against bad competition. Hard to say he’s done well.
again, playing this bullshit chip kelly style of offense
where you hold the ball for 46 seconds a possesion skews the reality in my eyes.
by BamaThrasher on Jan 4, 2012 10:33 PM CST up reply actions
I hear ya,
but just watching this defense tonight is painful and it’s not due to the offense early in the 1st and 2nd qtr before they should ever be tired. Poor tackling and fundamentals seems to be an understatement. Only Ole Miss looked worse in the SEC than this to me (granted I didn’t watch teams Bama didn’t play).
can't disagree with anything you are saying
outside of the fact that tonight they are also playing a team that does the exact same thing they do. Unfortunately, this evening, the team they are playing does it better, at least tonight. When you play a football game with close to 15 possesions a game, if you play poorly, and turn the ball over for scores, its easy to give up 50+. This is what non SEC fans don’t get, against an SEC squad, you will get roughly 8 to 9 possesions a game. That to me is why playing this style of football will never beat us.
by BamaThrasher on Jan 4, 2012 10:42 PM CST up reply actions
absolutely agree on the # of possesions
it’s amazing how others don’t seem to get this.
Isn't this the kind of offense that the Auburnite ran last year?
And I really can’t remember, but what kind of offense did Utah run in 2008? And seems Florida ran this offense pretty well for a while, but yeah, Tebow.
Thirteen.
Big difference
they all did it with an emphasis on chewing clock, not getting a play off every 8 seconds. From memory, against Oregon last year, I think the Ducks only got 9 possesions.
by BamaThrasher on Jan 4, 2012 10:51 PM CST up reply actions
yep,
and it took an amazing game by Tebow in 08 to win. Couldn’t do it in 09 as the talent improved at Bama and experience was gained. AU was just plain lucky last year. Baron isn’t injured, that doesn’t happen. Utah, well, not much to say there. We didn’t show up and they did.
BTW, I'm not saying they should fire him,
just speculating that may happen. I think he should have 1 more year to fix this. If tackling and fundamentals are still this bad next year, then fire him.
on the flip side
I would contend that while the fundamentals have been bad, without question, without a conversion to a ball control offense, it won’t matter.
by BamaThrasher on Jan 4, 2012 10:59 PM CST up reply actions
maybe not at a championship level,
but it would matter in a game like this as they would not be embarrassed by letting them put up 70 pts.
my point is
that even if you had a bad game, like tonight, you would have at most given up 40 some odd points because you would have killed the clock.
by BamaThrasher on Jan 4, 2012 11:04 PM CST up reply actions
yes, but my point is
with a good defense your offense might cost you a td or 2 and then the defense gives up 2 or 3 and you end up giving up 35 pts total regardless of your offense. So you lose 35-26 in this game on a bad day. Throw in a ball control offense and you win (I agree with you), but just put a decent defense on the field and it changes this game even with the current offense.
I think we can agree
with the style we play, even if you play like shit, you might have an outside shot at winning in the fourth quarter. Playing this style, you have zero chance.
by BamaThrasher on Jan 4, 2012 11:09 PM CST up reply actions
yep, that's one reason why
I love our team and we had a slightly off game against LSU and still pushed it to overtime. Roll Tide!
I always wondered if there was an underlying push
from CNS to go. CNS obviously wanted Kirby to stay and be the DC.
He is from SC. And maybe he wanted out from Saban’s shadow.
And Saban fought to keep him after 2007.

They came together.
Steele was DC/ILB coach, while Smart was AHCDEF/DB coach in 2007. After 2007, USA wanted him to be HC, while Arkansas and Tennessee and maybe a third school wanted him to be DC. An NFL team wanted him, as well. Saban made him AHCDEF/ILB coach, while Smart became DC/DB coach. Steele was the real DC, Smart his apprentice. And Steele got a pay raise.

ah, forgot about that.
Still, not surprising he left after Saban was comfortable with Kirby being DC alone.
He'd have a lot more talent to work with there
after about 3 more years of recovery from Kiffin.
And he was Saban’s first DC here.
Part of the problem is Saban/Steele’s defense is tccocomplicated for their young players. But there have been complaints that Steele’s hands have been tied regarding fundamentals and physical practices.

If it’s true that Dabo has tied his hands, then that’s looking like a huge mistake right now. I do wonder if it is possible for Clemson to get the talent needed to run a Saban defense effectively though.
Swinney and staff are recruiters.
Particularly Steele. He was Rivals #1 recruiter 2005, #10 2007 under Saban with only a month to recruit. Check out Rivals 2010 for Clemson. And they almost got Clowney.
