Under Armour All-American Game Open Thread

The Under Armour All-American Game is set to start here in just about thirty minutes, and this game will feature a heavy Alabama flair. Six current 'Bama commitments will be in action tonight, namely Eddie Williams, Chris Black, Reggie Ragland, Amari Cooper, Dakota Ball, and Brandon Greene.

Arguably more important, though, three Crimson Tide recruiting targets are expected to announce their decisions tonight. Heavily-recruited Maryland athlete Cyrus Jones is expected to commit to Alabama, while Mississippi jack linebacker / defensive end Channing Ward is largely expected to remain in-state, even though he does have the Tide in consideration. The biggest name of the night, however, is undoubtedly south Louisiana safety prospect Landon Collins, who is expected to announce in the fourth quarter tonight between Alabama and LSU. His recruitment has turned into almost a laughingstock with the uncertainty on both sides, and your guess is as good as mine as to where he announces to tonight. Hope for the best, of course, but clearly getting an elite player out of this area of the country is exceedingly difficult.

Kickoff is at 6:30 Central and the game will be televised on ESPN live from Tampa, so chime in here with all of your thoughts and comments on the action and the announcements.

If he does

he’ll be playing baseball for them. All the recruiting buzz i’ve heard is that he wants to play both and I see FSU allowing that. Bama not so much. Saban doesnt like to share, but not that I blame him. Too many ways to get hurt in baseball.

I think it's only intended to be 50% serious.

Maybe 75%. I thought it was funny. And in fairness, when’s the last time Stanford played for the national championship? And with Andrew Luck leaving, it’s going to be that much tougher for them.

God bless our Dark Lord.

I know.

Just something about internet posters making condescending remarks toward elite athletes because the team they root for is better than the team said athlete will actually be, you know, PLAYING for is a bit silly. Most any of us would have given our left nut to have had a full ride scholarship to Northeast Western Idaho Tech.

by J Tadpole on Jan 6, 2012 8:56 AM CST up reply actions

I would agree, if it was someone that wasn't offered a scholarship by Bama.

In that case, it would be silly and obnoxious to taunt them for where they go. Congrats to every guy that is able to get a scholarship.

But when a guy has an offer to come to Bama but chooses of his own free will to go somewhere else, then I don’t see a problem with people questioning that decision. Now of course there are other factors in a kid’s decision, and I do think we should wish him luck with his choice, but I think it’s a halfway reasonable and humorous comment to say “enjoy your Rose Bowl while we enjoy our national championships”.

I think it’s also a critique on the B10 and P12 and how they seem more concerned with protecting their spot in the Rose Bowl than in playing for national championships. That seems to be their primary goal, especially if you listen to Jim Delaney.

God bless our Dark Lord.

That's exactly my point.

Jim Delaney wants the Rose Bowl protected more than anything. Even so far as to sabotage a +1 to do it.

And I meant it humorously. And half seriously. The Pac12 love their Rose Bowl. They probably would not love it so much if they’d not kept Alabama from winning it all the time… thus the Big 10 invite.

by Durdens Wrath on Jan 6, 2012 10:20 AM CST up reply actions

Stanford has been to one Rose Bowl since 1972. That was in 2000, where they lost 9-17 to Wisconsin.

by Darth Saban on Jan 6, 2012 5:28 PM CST up reply actions

I'm having a tough time finding this one... tl;dr alert!
when’s the last time Stanford played for the national championship?

What I can tell you is that they’re 11-2 this year, and were 12-1 last year, which were outstanding years, but they didn’t win their conference either year (although we all know that this is not a requirement to play for National Championships). Prior to that, there was a long stretch of mediocrity-at-best stretching back to Ty Willingham, whose best seasons were a 9-3 campaign in 2001 and a PAC-10 Championship in 1999 at 8-4. Before that, more middlin’-to-bad until a PAC-10 Championship at 10-3 in 1992. Prior to that, more obscurity until back-to-back PAC-8 Championships in 1970-71, both at 9-3. Then more ho-hum-to-horrible back to a PCC Championship 9-2 season in 1951.

They last won a split national championship during their 10-0 1940 campaign. Stanford beat #7 Nebraska 21-13 in the Rose Bowl, and was declared National Champion by the Billingsley Report (retroactive), the Helms Athletic Foundation (retroactive), and the Poling System (contemporaneous, and shut up J Tadpole). This is one of their two claimed National Championships. Stanford finished #2 in the AP Poll.

They share this claim with Tennessee, who lost 19-13 to #4 Boston College in the Sugar Bowl, and was crowned National Champion by the Dunkel System (contemporaneous) and the Williamosn System (contemporaneous). This is one of their six claimed National Championships. Tennessee finished #4 in the AP Poll, behind 7-1 Michigan, whose only loss was to Minnesota.

The most commonly-recognized National Champion in 1940 was 8-0 Minnesota, who didn’t play in a bowl game. Minnesota finished the season ranked #1 in the AP Poll, and was annointed National Champions by them and the other nine NCAA Major Selectors, four of which were retroactive. This is one of Minnesota’s six claimed national championships.

Stanford’s other claimed National Championship was in 1926. What’s that, you ask? Wasn’t Alabama National Champion in 1926? Depends on whom you ask. The ONLY (that’s right, sole, singular, and alone) contemporaneous system for naming a National Championship considered as an NCAA Major Selector in 1926 was the Dickinson System:

The AP sportswriters’ poll would not begin continuously until 1936.5 (although, the first time was a one instance publishing in 19346) Frank G. Dickinson, an economics professor at the University of Illinois, had invented the Dickinson System to rank colleges based upon their records and the strength of their opposition. The system was originally designed to rank teams in the Big Nine (later the Big Ten) conference. Chicago clothing manufacturer Jack Rissman then persuaded Dickinson to rank the nation’s teams under the system, and awarded the Rissman Trophy to the winning university.7 Although Dickinson retroactively applied the system to the 1924 and 1925 seasons, the year 1926 was the first in which the trophy was awarded at season’s end. In 1926, the results were given on December 17. The system awarded 30 points for a win over a “strong team”, and 20 for a win over a “weak team”. Losses were awarded points (15 for loss to a strong team, 10 for loss to a weak team). Ties were treated as half a win and half a loss (22.5 for a tie with a strong team, 15 for a tie with a weak team). An average was then derived by dividing the points by games played.8 Professor Dickinson’s ratings were unfavorable to Alabama, which won all nine of its regular season games, but were given an average rating of 16.67, less than the average for wins over weak (20.00 point) contenders. Alabama was the only Southern team in the 1926 rankings.

Stanford finished the regular season 10-0, and Alabama finished 9-0. Stanford finished the regular season #1 in the Dickinson System, while Alabama finished #6, behind #2 Navy (9-0-1), #3 (tie) Michigan (7-1), #3 (tie) Notre Dame (9-1), #4 (that’s right, tie at #3, there’s still a #4) Lafayette College (9-0), and #5 USC (8-2).

Alabama and Stanford would meet in the Rose Bowl.

United Press called the 1927 Rose Bowl “the football championship of America”, and the game was considered the most exciting in the series up to that time. The crowd of 68,000 set an attendance record. Stanford’s George Bogue missed an 18 yard field goal attempt in the first quarter, then threw a touchdown pass to Ed Walker and kicked the point after to put Stanford up, 7-0. The Indians held that lead through most of the rest of the game, but in the final minutes, they were forced to punt on fourth down. Frankie Wilton’s kick was blocked, and Alabama took over 14 yards from goal. Four plays later, and with a minute left, Jimmy Johnson carried the ball for a touchdown, making it 7-6. The two point conversion, and overtime, were decades in the future. Stanford’s only hope was to block the point after, but Alabama ran the play quickly and Herschel Caldwell’s kick tied Stanford, and took away an Indian victory in the final minute. 10

Alabama was recognized as National Champion by five NCAA Major Selectors, all of which selected retroactively.

Concerning Adam "Made in Poland" Griffith:
Earlier this week, the inaugural Semper Fidelis All-American Bowl took place in Phoenix, Arizona, with Tide and Tiger commitments making their mark in that game as well. Auburn wide receiver commitment JaQuay Williams made an impact early in the game hauling in a 48-yard touchdown reception to put the East up 7-0 in the first quarter. Auburn tight end commitment Ricky Parks also participated in the game, along with a pair of Crimson Tide commitments, defensive lineman Darren Lake and kicker Adam Griffith.

“In the game, Lake was a handful and was consistently pushing the line, opening holes for the linebackers,” said 247Sports’ Justin Hopkins, who was on hand for the game and the week of practice leading up to it. “He gets a great push out of his stance and had an extremely solid week on what was arguably the most complete unit at the camp.”

Griffith, who is ranked by several services as the nation’s top kicker prospect, also earned rave reviews from Hopkins.

“Adam Griffith can boom the ball,” said Hopkins. “During practice he was banging kickoffs into the end zone, often only taking two steps. He wasn’t able to get any field goals during the game but was accurate from long range all week long in Phoenix.”

Safety Mark Barron continues to be held out of contact drills during media viewing periods. Linebacker Courtney Upshaw has the two outside fingers on his right hand heavily taped.

I'm not looking up the rule (but I will if you ask)...

Don't think so

You only do not sit if you transfer down a level. An outright release just means he can go to any school who he wants to attend. The coach can limit where he cannot go i.e. no other SEC program.

Alright, let's check. tl;dr alert!
13.1.1.3 Four-Year College Prospective Student-Athletes. An athletics staff member or other representative of the institution’s athletics interests shall not make contact with the student-athlete of another NCAA or NAIA four-year collegiate institution, directly or indirectly, without first obtaining the written permission of the first institution’s athletics director (or an athletics administrator designated by the athletics director) to do so, regardless of who makes the initial contact. If permission is not granted, the second institution shall not encourage the transfer and the institution shall not provide athletically related financial assistance to the student-athlete until the student-athlete has attended the second institution for one academic year. If permission is granted to contact the student-athlete, all applicable NCAA recruiting rules apply. If an institution receives a written request from a student-athlete to permit another institution to contact the student-athlete about transferring,
the institution shall grant or deny the request within seven business days (see Bylaw 13.02.1) of receipt of the request. If the institution fails to respond to the student-athlete’s written request within seven business days, permission shall be granted by default and the institution shall provide written permission to the student-athlete.
(Revised: 1/10/91, 1/16/93, 1/11/94, 4/26/01, 4/29/04 effective 8/1/04, 4/29/10 effective 8/1/10)
13.1.1.3.2 Student-Athlete Withdrawn from Four-Year College. A member institution may contact a student-athlete who has withdrawn officially from a four-year collegiate institution without obtaining permission from the first institution only if at least one academic year has elapsed since the withdrawal.
13.6.2.3.2 Transfer Student. If a student-athlete attending a four-year institution desires to transfer and that institution provides the permission required (per Bylaw 13.1.1.3), it is permissible for a second institution to provide the student-athlete one official visit to that institution’s campus.
14.5.5.1 General Rule. A transfer student from a four-year institution shall not be eligible for intercollegiate competition at a member institution until the student has fulfilled a residence requirement of one full academic year (two full semesters or three full quarters) at the certifying institution. (Revised: 1/10/91 effective 8/1/91, 4/14/10)
14.5.5.1.1 Attendance for One Academic Year. A transfer student from a four-year institution who attended a four-year institution at least one academic year shall be eligible for financial aid (see Bylaw 14.5.5.4) and practice at a member institution under the rules of the institution and the conference of which the institution is a member, regardless of the student’s qualification status (per Bylaw 14.3.1.1) at the time of initial enrollment. (Revised: 1/9/06 effective 8/1/07)

I do not immediately see an applicable exception, but feel free to check rule 14.5.5.2 for yourself to see if you see something I missed.

Does this remind anybody of McElroy in the SEC Championship 2009?
Alabama’s redshirt sophomore quarterback can be loud, in your face and provide plenty of flashy moments.

McCarron believes he plays his best when emotion overrides his grip on precision football. He felt that way when he helped guide the Crimson Tide to a 38-10 win over Florida.

Against LSU, he toned it down — a direct order from Alabama coach Nick Saban — and the result was a 9-6 overtime loss to the Tigers void of any razzle-dazzle in the passing game. McCarron was 16-of-28 for 199 yards and an interception.

“During the Florida game, when I was getting the crowd going … coach told me to calm down,” McCarron said. “After the LSU game, he told me to play with emotion again, that he missed that. I definitely gotta come out and play with emotion in this game like I always do, just play my game.”

The last offensive coordinator from the Patriots to get a HC spot in the midwest – also an alumni – was Charlie Tuna at ND. That did not work out so well. I am not optimistic for them…

Texas means nothing. FSU will mess up the talent and Winston is going Baseball.

I think behaving like that showed a lot of immaturity. If she’s not happy she shouldn’t show it in that way on national tv. Very, unclassy.

we will have 21. next year we will be in the same position as LSU; needing to grab a solid number of OL in our class, like we have been doing the past few years.

And do we have a replacement for Courtney, who is a DE/OLB?

I think Stallings wanted to sign 8-10 linemen every year.

And we turn DE’s into OLB’s.

First time under Saban.

Kinda worries me. But we lose only Vlachos and Chapman. Don’t know about the depth chat.

Landon Collins

Does anyone realize that Collins comes from Eddie Lacy’s high school (Geismar-Dutchtown HS)? I believe Lacy was a senior to Collins’ frosh-ness. I think we’re good for holdin’ onto him.

Collins was on us after we won the BCS NCG

He knows Saban gives him the best chance to become what he wants, and after reading that ESPN article I am convinced he is UA all the way.

Per a trusted poster on another board

Collins lives with his dad/stepmother and grandmother. Stepmother is a former Bama basketball player. They apparently support his decision. Mom seems to be competing with the GF. TIFWIW.

I think we need our own network:
Thursday night’s Under Armour All-American Game, which highlighted a number of players committed to sign with the Crimson Tide in 2012, earned a 5.6 Nielson rating in Birmingham, the highest rating for the program in any market and nearly twice the rating of the second-best market (Tulsa at 2.9).
