24 Hours Left...

Biggest game ever for 'Bama? Maybe not, but it's hard not to feel that way this close to kick-off in the Rematch of the Century. Les Miles called it "big boy football" today, while Nick Saban talked about a 60 minute game that would go down to the very end, just like all of the other 'Bama v. LSU games in recent years. LSU remains the favorite of the talking heads, but 'Bama is once again the favorite in Vegas with much of the late money being placed on the Tide.

On RBR, I'll have one final wrap-up tomorrow morning, in addition to the Jumbo Package, and we'll have open threads throughout the day before the game threads go up tomorrow night. Either way, we're only 24 hours from kick-off in New Orleans.

Bama Fans Everywhere!!

This life long Bama fan and his teenage daughter ( who I have raised to bleed crimson) will not move in about 24 hours. I have one thing to say ( lord know I want to get this right. Don’t want a few fellow Bama fans with their panties in a bunch like in another thread because of a joke!),and that is…….

ROLL TIDE ROLL!!!

Good luck guys. Let’s kick those kitty’s in the mouth!!

Roll Tide to you, my brother. Enjoy your time with your daughter. That has got to be some serious bonding…

And don’t take much of what I say to heart. I’m as full of shit as a Christmas turkey, especially on a Friday/Saturday evening after dark (and add tomorrow to that as well).

Have fun.

But it’s the biggest game for this year. Always remember, and never forget, this is a Golden Age for Alabama Football. Appreciate it, enjoy it, wallow in it. It won’t last forever. Roll, Mighty Crimson Tide, Roll. And Thank You.

I have to say,

the build-up to this year’s championship has had a completely different feel from 2009. Maybe it’s because we’ve become used to winning, maybe it’s not. I think it’s the fact that we’ve spent the last five weeks listening to people bitch about how we shouldn’t be in the game, or how it’s going to be terrible to watch, etc. Don’t get me wrong, I’ll still be riveted to the TV and will celebrate our victory with gusto, it’s just made the runup to the game a hell of a lot less fun.

by rugman11 on Jan 8, 2012 8:15 PM CST reply actions

2009 was just hard to believe

it was like it was a dream – seriously. I did not expect to win that game. After so many years of disappointments I really felt like we’d never get another title (at UA from 00-04…brutal stuff)

I feel confident but not certain about the outcome. Either way, I’m proud that two SEC teams are in it. I have already notified work of my absence for the next day. I will be either hungover with joy and watch the game again and again or hungover with grief and delete it as soon as I wake up.

On the other side of this coin, though

…we have also responded well to the other teams when they ‘strike first’. I’m not sure if it wakes us up, or shifts the play calling up a notch, or what, but we do not pack it in if we get down early. So that is the good news.

The fake punt explained:

Nick, the last time you were in the national championship game against Texas, you did a fake punt on the first series. Was that a predesigned play or a Les Miles moment or what that was?

SABAN: To be honest with you, it was probably a mistake, because it didn’t work. But the way we went into that game, because they used to uncover the gunners a lot on the punt and nobody would run out and cover him. Sort of daring you to throw the ball to the guy.

Well, we actually made Julio Jones the gunner into the boundary so we could throw the ball to him. And he got hurt on the play before that punt, and we had a freshman who has turned out to be a pretty good player in the meantime, Dre Kirkpatrick, who was in there, and he didn’t really run the pass pattern.

So even though it was probably ill-advised, it was automatic to do that the first time they did it, so they wouldn’t do it anymore.

And it didn’t work. So it was a bad deal all the way around. But sometimes when you do things like that, the players see you being aggressive and maybe it’s not as bad as you think.

When I was here at LSU and we played Tennessee in the first [SEC] championship game, I think it was in 2001, and they were No. 1 or 2 in the country going to go play in the national championship game, we got behind 14-7 and we were on the 29-yard line with fourth and an inch. I mean an inch.

Now, they had [Albert] Haynesworth and some big guys playing in the middle. So I said we’re going to go for it on our own 29-yard line on fourth and an inch. And we got stuffed. And we sacked them and they kicked a field goal and they got ahead 17-7.

And for the next five minutes of the game I was like in la-la land, like, Why did you do that? That’s the dumbest thing you’ve ever done. My wife even told me: That’s the dumbest call I’ve seen you make since you’ve been a head coach.

But we were walking off the field after the game, the seniors came up and said: ‘You know, Coach, that was the most important thing you did in the game is when you went for it on fourth down.’

I said: ‘Really?’ They said: ‘Yeah, because when you did that, we really thought we could win. You were being aggressive and you were trying to win, and we were aggressive after that and we ended up winning the game 31-20.’

So even sometimes the dumbest things you do, you never know how people are going to respond to them. And that was one of the dumb ones, and throwing that pass against Texas last year was one of the dumb ones, too. There’s many more in between, incidentally. (Laughter).

normally I refrain from this, but we all know its substance issues that cause all this, but at somepoint we need reevaluate prison vs rehabilitation and education. Just my two cents, and again, I know this isn’t kosher here, but I couldn’t resist.

My brother lived in Buckhead. I preferred Buckhead.

I'm watching this replay

And I’m surprised how well McCarron played overall in the game minus the interception. He made some smart moves not throwing the ball and protecting it. Especially since we’ve seen this LSU swift defense has made other teams regret their bad decisions. So, I guess I’m saying AJ had a realistic idea of how quick and athletic the defense he was playing against.

he made two critical mistakes, the pick, and the sack in OT

otherwise, considering the play calling, I don’t think he was the issue. I am also watching the game.

I don't think the field goal attempts where that much of a mistake either

except putting Shelley in. I mean punting from the 33 yardline? We haven’t shown any ability to pooch kick either.

Have to give it to LSU

we missed a TD in the first because the ball was a split second late, same with the pick. They are just freaking good, and that is all there is to it.

If we lose Monday night

It’ll probably be my biggest disappointing lose since 12/31/1973. But I will have to admit this LSU team is damn good, hitting on all cylinders, and healthy. We are not.

In the mess afterward I forgot how much better we played than them. Just oddball garbage every time we got momentum. They gotta be scared.

It's a free country apparently. Harvey Updike in NOLA:
Izzy Gould from the Tuscaloosa Bureau of al.com newspapers ran into Updyke in the throng of fans Sunday night.

Updyke, who said he is tired of his 15 minutes of fame, was a popular destination for fans Sunday night. Many fans stopped him begging for autographs and photos while he was strolling up and down Bourbon Street this evening.

Updyke also said that has been approached by several people to write a book about him. Clay Travis has been pushing him the hardest to write the book, Updyke said.

Updyke believes he has a ticket to the BCS National Championship Game Monday night.

It's like Coach Saban doesn't have confidence in backups.

That is a difference I see in him and Coach Bryant. Bryant wasn’t afraid to pull a player and out somebody else in. And many times that player would really step up. There’s that story where he sends a player in to kick an important extra point and the kid had never kicked one in his life. Of course the kid made it.

Your momma...

LSU coach Les Miles was asked Sunday if he was aware of talk that star cornerback Tyrann Mathieu has been looking up the names of mothers of Alabama players for trash-talk purposes.

“That would be news to me,” Miles said.

If it’s true, Miles does not approve.

“Gamemanship is one thing,” he said. “I think that might be a touch much.”

CAN YOU FEEL THE EXCITMENT BUILDING

Funny story: I work with a guy that is a life long LSU fan here in NC. He was down there over the 1st, and was at the Sugar Bowl. Sent me a text pic of some cool Bama beeds (yes…had a set of the LSU one too). He told me he got me those beeds so I could give them to my daughter. I sent him a text back saying….‘If you had to show your tits to get these you can keep them! I don’t want that picture in my mind when I looked at the beeds". He assured me today when he gave them to me that he bought them…….I am a little uneasy about that….HAHAHA

Saban is a teddy bear!!!!

Funny….he is a lot more relaxed than I remember in 2009. Is it his confidence that his guys are ready? Is it his comfort because he knows this team so well?

All I know is her in NC its almost 7 hours until kickoff. I am done with work at 2 eastern. That means……time to start getting the stuff set up for tonight! these past 5+,years with Saban bring back memories of the 70’s and the early 90’s for this Bama fan. I hope I never loose this feeling. Good luck to the Crimson and White tonight! I hope and think that around 12 midnight Bama can change that logo helmet that has the #13 on it to #14!!!!! its a great time to be a fan!
