Since we’re in a bit of a lull, I thought this would be a fine opportunity to reflect back on the 2012 season and mock some of the sillier storylines that the media pounced on this year. Feel free to chime in below with your observations about other terrible narratives.

USC IS BACK!!!

People on this site that thought USC was legit were few and far between, but the media bought the sales pitch for these damaged goods. Hard. It took all of three weeks of play for the glaring weaknesses discussed here to show up in force and cost USC its first loss (of an eventual 5 losses). It seems like it would be difficult for the national media to whiff on a national champ pick so badly.

AJ as a Heisman Contender

Look, I’m an AJ fan. He’s a local guy and he’s been a fantastic quarterback. But the fact that he was ever considered a likely finalist is almost laughable. It was great that he was throwing no interceptions, but that is not nearly enough to win you the Heisman trophy.

Johnny Football Love

Ah, the game of which we do not speak. Johnny Football was already making a name for himself in CFB, but on this day he launched himself to the top of a muddled list of Heisman finalists. He’s a fine enough football player, but he basically had one fantastic quarter in his three toughest games. Otherwise he was largely shut down (1 rush TD, 0 pass TD against FL; 0 rush TD, 0 pass TD, 3 INT against LSU).

Give T’eo ALL the Awards

I’m sure that this T’eo fellow is a nice enough guy, but no way is he the best defensive player in the country. We’ve already discussed how Mosley’s stats all compare favorably to T’eo, and how other players (Jones, Clowney) appear to be better talents, so there doesn’t seem to be much more to say about this one. Congrats on all the statues, T’eo. I suppose now you’ll have somewhere to hang all the necklaces.
