National Signing Day Open Thread (Kirven, Tomlinson Sign with Bama)
Enough speculation, ladies and gentlemen, it's time to make all those verbal commitments binding with the stroke of a pen. Not a great deal of activity is expected today for Alabama, but the Tide looks to be in good standing with Dalvin Tomlinson and the surging talk late last night was that 'Bama might land Korren Kirven today as well. With any hope Alabama can hang on to the current verbal commitments and add those two to further shore up the defensive line.
In any event, there are four announcements in particular this morning that Alabama followers should keep a very close eye on, and those four are listed below with their tentatively scheduled announcement times.
Korren Kirven has signed with Alabama, choosing the Tide over home state Virginia Tech. Tennessee was thought to be a serious contender here, so add this one to the rather long list of Derek Dooley misses.
Dalvin Tomlinson has signed with Alabama, per Gentry Estes and several others. Tomlinson was the most likely signee coming into today, and with Kirven and Tomlinson in the bag 'Bama is likely done for the day, barring the unexpected defection or perhaps another greyshirt candidate.
Justin Taylor has elected to sign with Kentucky rather than greyshirt at Alabama, thus ending one of the stupider media driven recruiting "scandals" of recent memory. Good luck to him in Lexington. Commit list has been updated accordingly.
Eddie Goldman has signed with Florida State. Not a big shock there, especially considering the signing of Kirven and Tomlinson. This one is a bigger loss for Auburn than it is 'Bama.
Dorial Green-Beckham has signed with Missouri, and Bobby Petrino once again proudly flies the fail whale over the skies of Fayetteville. Green-Beckham is in the SEC now, and 'Bama will have to stop him a couple of times, but it's much better than having him in Petrino's spread passing attack. Really a big sigh of relief for 'Bama fans here.
Jameis Winston, who still claims a solid commitment to Florida State, has reiterated that he will not announce or sign a letter of intent today. He stated on ESPN that he would "probably" sign on Friday, but that it may be next week. Just smile and waive on this one, boys.
Casey Gladney has signed with Texas Tech. The Tech news comes as a bit of a surprise, but he was not expected to sign with 'Bama today given his academic situation, and the odds are that he will be a sign-and-place in Lubbock. In any event, it is funny to see that even four years later and a thousand miles away Tuberville is still stockpiling Nick Saban's leftovers.
Brandon Hill has officially signed with Alabama. So much for any outstanding worries that his academic standing would cost him a spot.
Kwon Alexander has signed with LSU, spurning the greyshirt offer from Alabama. You kind of hate to see this one because, by all accounts, Alexander is a good kid who was a 'Bama guy at heart, but it's pretty obvious at this point that recruits with viable alternatives don't like the notion of greyshirting, and admittedly it's hard to criticize signing with a school like LSU. Best of luck to him down in Baton Rouge.
Kyron Samuels, nephew of former Outland Trophy winner Chris Samuels, has decided to enroll at East Mississippi Community College and plans to sign with Mississippi State next January. You can remove him as a potential greyshirt candidate for 'Bama.
Darius Philon has not signed with Alabama and according to a teammate he has been offered a greyshirt by the 'Bama coaching staff. Apparently this was a late, unexpected development on his end, so no one knows exactly how it will end up just yet. It's possible he could go the way of Justin Taylor.
Landon Collins has signed with Alabama. So much for the fears over the late flip to LSU. Troll Tide and whatnot.
Brandon Greene has signed with Alabama, turning down all overtures from Georgia. The in-state program had put a lot of pressure on Greene in an attempt to steer him to Athens, but Greene has stuck with his months-long verbal commitment and will enroll in Tuscaloosa.
Signed Letters of Intent Received in Tuscaloosa
Deion Belue (early enrollment)
TJ Yeldon (early enrollment)
Travell Dixon (early enrollment)
Ryan Anderson (early enrollment)
Chris Black (early enrollment)
Amari Cooper (early enrollment)
Dillon Lee (early enrollment)
Alphonse Taylor (early enrollment)
Korren Kirven
Alec Morris
Geno Smith
Eddie Williams
Dakota Ball
Kenyan Drake
Denzel Devall
Reggie Ragland
Caleb Gulledge
Kurt Freitag
Tyler Hayes
Brandon Hill
Adam Griffith
Dalvin Tomlinson
Darren Lake
Cyrus Jones
Landon Collins
Brandon Greene
Final Update: With the exception of the uncertainty remaining over Darius Philon and his potential greyshirt, the 2012 recruiting class is officially signed, sealed and delivered at this point. All of the current commitments who were expected to sign did in fact sign with the Tide today, and 'Bama picked up two additional signees from Korren Kirven and Dalvin Tomlinson. Consider this one as successful of a Signing Day as you can realistically expect.

Not sure what you mean.
If they sign, then they’re guaranteed a scholly if they qualify. But I don’t think it gives them any more power in forcing schools to make them eligible, if that’s what you mean. That still has to go through the NCAA.

Maybe, maybe not.
I would think the coaches would look at it as a risk vs. benefit situation. We don’t want to waste a signature on someone who may not qualify. But if the kid is good enough or if it’s only a slight chance of him not qualifying, then I would think we would take it.
God bless our Dark Lord.
We don't have to accept any LOIs that we aren't expecting.
And there are different levels of “offering” a scholly. Players already know if they have a “firm” offer or not.

There was one set of coaches calling him directly after he tore his ACL…
If chooses LSU even then he needs to go as he has no loyalty to the guys that were after him the longest. Nobody has been recruiting Kwon Alexander harder for longer than Auburn. We are program killers
How many times does this make that we faced a program that was among the elite and destroyed them? We left Miami, Texas, and Florida in worse shape for years to come. I am not saying these programs won’t get good again. But it’s funny how much worse they were after the Bama beatdown. And no I don’t count the Coker Miami championship because it was a 1 year deal and then the fell off. Even Auburn has accomplished that.
Here's the question

so true..
i’m 25..i can barely remember 92..the years of my youth were awful for bama football..its been great since january 2007.
I grew up in alabama...
and attended from 2004-2006. My family were all diehard ’Bama fans but I was too busy with sports and chasing girls to care too much. Until my eyes were opened to the Coed, then, I knew. But yeah, I witnessed a 10 win season, but for the most part I was there for the Dark Ages.
Schwing.
I was in the MDB from 04-06...
yeah, had to live through some rough stuff. I should get piss drunk and start shouting at the current band kids “YOU DON’T KNOW! YOU DON’T KNOW WHAT IT WAS LIKE!”
Fumbles. It was always Fumbles
Was at UA '83-'85.
It’s hard to express how low ‘84 was, when the season started 1-4, and Athletics is calling us at grungy little WVUA, 120 watts of FM power, asking us to help talk up the team, throw in a “Roll Tide!”, etc. We were pretty sure the entire administration didn’t want to admit we existed in those days…
We had a guy in my section last year who had been in the band since 06
And when people got pissy leaving Baton Rouge he was like “You don’t know how good we have it! I had to go to Shreveport!”
Dave Robertson is growing up to be the new Mariano Rivera. My two universes of fandom can finally unite!

Well, it's tough, no doubt . . .
. . . but these kids are told everything all along the way. He can either turn this into an opportunity by demonstrating to the Bama coaching staff that he can work his ass off re-habbing that knee or he can go crying off to Texas Tech or Kentucky. Life’s hard. I don’t feel bad for these kids; they have far more opportunities than the average high school graduate.
I see it differently
If he is actually “distraught,” as reported, I’m not going to assume he was told all along what would happen. I don’t know the facts and won’t choose to assume they are a certain way just because we want it that way.
If he has more opportunity than others, perhaps that’s because he worked his ass off to become a top athlete, as is typically the case. Again, I don’t know what happened and am not making assumptions, but IF we led him down the primrose path I’m not going to excuse it even if he can still get on with one of the loser programs that hasn’t filled out yet.
I’d like to know mores

I wonder what swayed DBG to go to New Mizz?
I’d like to think it was Bobby Petrino being such a poor looser and all around douchebag in public. I pray that not shaking Les Miles’ hand after Arky’s loss was a big factor in DGB taking his talents to Columbia and not Fayetteville.
I sincerely dislike that man and if possible, he deembiggens the majesty that is ArKansas.

They're just trying to out smug the SEC's . . .

Academic scholarships are performance based and it can be taken away. So, why is it so bad when a football scholarship taken away due to lack of performance? Not that it even happens much at all, but the big whatever will/does make out like it happens all the time.

So...
how do you guys think or RB depth chart will look? Personally I think we maybe have 3-4 guys capable of being the number 1 guy on the depth chart for next season
Lacy, Hart, Fowler, TJ, Sims
If Auburn was in New Mexico and we never played them I would still hate them and their dumb coach and their cheating players.
I tend to agree
but much moreso than in the past I think we’re going to see a RB by committee. We’ve got 5 guys who were either five or four star recruits. Expect no one to get more than 150 carries. Don’t forget about Kenyon Drake
i think Lacy, then TJ yeldon, then Fowler
It was a woman who drove me to drink and I never got a chance to thank her.

Obviously we haven't seen him against live fire,
but if I had to make a guess today, I would guess that he’s not that guy. To me, he looks like he’s built like a shorter TR. He’s super fast, has good hands and should be tough to take down with that low center of gravity. He’s probably gonna be a bit over 200 lbs after having a year and a half in the program.
So my guess today – He’s gonna be a good ’un.

He kicked 4 FGs in the State championship game
including a 46-yarder and a 32-yard game winner in OT.
So, yes, he can kick under pressure.
Fourteen and counting
I don't really care; just saying he looks like he's 12.
But no, the link doesn’t do me any good here on my work computer.
God bless our Dark Lord.
In the picture he provided above, he definitely does.

talking with recruits for next year. That is why!!
If Auburn was in New Mexico and we never played them I would still hate them and their dumb coach and their cheating players.
Didnt Alfie Hill finally qualify and is on campus.?
Let’s not forget the big ballers from the 2011 class.

I don't think he's on campus.
Moreover, I don’t think he’ll ever be in a Bama uni.

RT @cubbies1967: @slmandel what is your beef with Auburn?
I have no beef. But apparently many of the nation’s top HS football players do.

ROLL TIDE!!!!
You know we got 2 of LA’s top 5 prospects.
Talent can only get you so far. Give me a player who has less talent, but the heart of a champion and the will to succeed.
Actually, we got LA's top 2!
DB Landon Collins Geismar, Louisiana/Dutchtown Alabama
LB Denzel Devall Bastrop, Louisiana/Bastrop 6’2" Alabama
LB Otha Peters Covington, Louisiana/Covington Arkansas
LB Torshiro Davis Shreveport, Louisiana/Woodlawn Texas
RB Daniel Taylor Lutcher, Louisiana/Lutcher ?
ATH Davante Bourque Crowley, Louisiana/Crowley Tennessee
Fourteen and counting
They'll only land one of their top 6, if they're lucky?
Damn.

I guess Darius Philon is now an "official" grey-shirt
Though he can sign with any other team if he so decides.
I LOVE IT
Saban is working on the 2013 class.
Urban is on the treadmill.

Random question
Did Harrison Jones and/or Malcom Faciane redshirt last year?
Okay thanks
Working on a fanpost to be posted shortly
Harrison will take over for Smelley.
He is a big part of the reason Barrett came back. Barrett knows little bro will be getting plenty of playing time this year.
PS- He is actually bigger than Smelley so should be a hoss.
If Auburn was in New Mexico and we never played them I would still hate them and their dumb coach and their cheating players.
so I'm trying to find clarification in the comments
but how was the Darion Philon situation handled?

I have no problem with the new grey shirt rule
Now you just don’t sign and have the right to sign elsewhere if another school can convince you. But, if you really want to stick with Bama, you can do that.
To tweak the rule, it might be fair to offer 2013 commit-able offers for 2012 class kids at some earlier point, even now.
I wish the NCAA would allow for a Medical redshirt for the first year
if injury occurred before signing and not count against the 25. Both Taylor and Philon are coming off bad injuries.
I know that is too radical of an idea but they sure let stupid Case Keenum hang around forever playing in 57 – YES 57 – games as a collegian.

Hey guys... just remember
Auburn doesn’t accuse people of cheating in recruiting.
They also are super excited about how Saban offered grayshirts but Auburn didn’t. (They neglect to mention that they have only 20 signees.)
