This is a copy of a letter written by Bear Bryant to an Alabama player over summer break that has been making the e-mail rounds lately (a larger version is here). It seems legitimate as the stationary matches what was used by the UA athletic department at that time. Chattanoogan sports columnist Roy Exum even did a piece on it last Tuesday. What isn't known is exactly who this letter was sent to as it only has the recipient's first name, "Chris." Our guess is it was for sophomore defensive end Chris Meadows in 1982. Here's why... The letterhead includes the 1979 National Championship so it would have to be for a player on the team between 1980 and 1982. Looking at the rosters for those three seasons Meadows is the only Chris on them and he only appears on the 1982 list. And the first day of fall practice that year matches the date in the letter. Of course that's just a guess. In any case, it's a fantastic piece of Crimson Tide history no matter who it was actually penned for.
