As I read the comments today on twitter and facebook regarding the PSU mess I couldn’t help but think "Man these comments seem awfully judgmental". I mean I get it. Sandusky is scum. Well really he's worse than scum. He's the worst kind of human being; the darkest of sinner and a stain on our race. So go ahead and sling your rocks at his direction. He deserves it.
I don't even have a problem with judgment towards those who helped cover up young boys being molested. This includes JoPa and anyone else involved. If you know young boys are being abused and you do nothing, you deserve any punishment our government can hurl at your direction. So I’m not defending anyone’s actions or even suggesting they are free of judgment but...
Where I get annoyed is at people attacking the PSU fan base and alum for struggling with the emotion and inner conflict that comes with such an issue. Think about the loyalty they feel towards Penn St and how hard this has to be for them? To us it seems obvious that JoPa's statue should be torn down...immediately. We are quick to sling mud at JoPa and PSU. I've even seen people cry for the NCAA to bring the death penalty..to shut down PSU forever. Why stop there? Let’s just drop an A-bomb on State College and remove any record of their existence from all history books? It sounds so easy to move from adoration to anger seamlessly but for them it has to be excruciating.
But what if the shoe were on the other foot? What if, what had happened at PSU happened at Bama? Switch JoPa with The Bear. Sandusky with "any great Alabama assistant coach". Would we be so quick to tear down Bryant's statue, remove his name from BDS, re-name the Bryant Museum, remove all photo's and memories of his career and simply set aside our love and affection for the man and all that he did for our great University? My gut says no. How long would it take for us to come to the realization that the man we worshiped was actually a part of some evil cover up? Would we ever be able to truly accept it?
JoPas was iconic. He was the heart of a fan base and a University for 5 decades. Up until 6 months ago he was loved by all. Let’s step back for a second and try and have some sympathy for the people associated with PSU and the hard place smashed between two15 ton rocks they find themselves.
