Feeling sorry for Legion Field.

  • This is the place where I fell In love with Alabama football. I remember my first game there was against Tulane. I want to say it was in 1986. I remember we won of course, but that was beside the point. I was fascinated by the monstrosity. It was one of the few memorable days I enjoyed with my father. I remember sitting in the enzone facing the huge jumbo-tron "during it's time". Near the end of the game, everyone started to leave, so we moved to the upper deck, which is now gone. After watching the game from a low level, I thought the upper deck seats were the best in the house.
  • It may be justme, but I can remember hearing the fans in the upper deck stomp, or jump up and down from the concession stands below, when something good happened on the field. I have seen a many of iorn bowls and games from those stands. The last game I attended in Legion field took place in 1998, "I think", as Shawn Alexander ran wild on the Houston Cougars. Before the game, we locked our keys inside our extended cab, brand new Z71. Afterwards, we gave a local resident of Mclendon park the remainder of our beer and 20 bucks to break into the car for us. We tried to do so ourselves, a bunch of broke highschool kids three hours from home. It was an 11am kick, game was over by 2pm, so we had to have spent about four hours trying to break in. We noticed it was getting dark, so we had to get out of there. He popped the extended cab window and some how shimmied through about an 8 inch opening. I remember sitting on the curb, reeling from a hangover from drinking as much beer as we could between the three hours it took us to get there from Dothan Al. I fully expected to see tail lights and spinning wheels once he got into the car. I just knew he was going to speed off once he got in the truck. Although it would make for an excellent post and story, he didnt do as I expected.
  • But as I drove by this stadium today, I couldn't help but get a sinking feeling in my stomach. I have to be honest, I love BDS, It's the best in the country. But....."pausing for effect"..... I love the city of Birmingham and I love legion field as well. I bet it's where all of the 30 and over crowd fell in love with our team and college football, so I would feel safe in saying that I doubt I am the only one who gets a gut wrenching feeling when I see the stadium dying "for lack of a better word". I know it wouldn't help enough, but if Alabama could play one game there every year in order to keep the Old Grey Lady alive, then I would say lets do it. But since that's not going to happen, I find it hard to look as I pass it on occasion. So I tend to avoid Graymont Avenue when I can.
