Tonight Harvey Updyke pleaded guilty to poisoning the trees at Auburn. You can read about it here: http://blog.al.com/wire/2013/03/auburn_fans_officials_breathe.html
I must admit I have not been following this case. I mean it is really not on my radar screen. But personally I find the punishment to be almost laughable in light of the big deal Auburn made about the incident. You would have thought from all the original publicity Updyke would have been looking at 20 years to life for tree murder. Instead he gets 76 days in the Lee County jail. (True he had already served 104 days so his sentence was 180 days but 76 is all he actually got from the judge.)
Now, I tell you what old Harvey needs to do. He needs to get a ghost writer and an agent and get to work on his book. Seriously I think a book titled "How I Murdered Toomer's Trees" would easily sell 100,000 copies in Alabama alone. Next would come the movie deal.
Of course I'm joking a little bit. But please don't call me a hater. I'm sorry it happened and sorry in their last year of existence the trees did not get to be rolled once for an SEC win (actually I'm not sorry for that.) But I do think much, much, way too much was made out of what apparently a judge and a DA have decided was not near as big a deal as the media and the Aubies made it out to be.
