bammer- Interesting topic and some good points made by Greg. When we took over RBR five months ago, we made a vow to do our best to give as many Alabama sports the coverage they deserve. Football is king and will always be the favorite of the majority of this fan base. That's OK btw but the lack in attendance, especially at home baseball games, is disconcerting to say the least. Did y'all know Alabama is the leader in all-time SEC baseball wins? You wouldn't know it given the lack of support that team receives by not only the fan base but the University as well..
Multiple choice: Pick one and only one. Do you prefer a) winning, b) football, c) The University of Alabama? I ask because it’s an issue that’s been bothering me. Lately, particularly on social media sites, there have been a lot of snarky comments that “Bama fans don’t care about (fill in the sport here that isn‘t football),” and earlier this year one of my best friends and fellow UA alum commented, “I don’t know why you do this to yourself,” when I was in the midst of an Alabama basketball meltdown.
I do this to myself because I love The University of Alabama. Sure, I enjoy the football program’s success. But I also watch the hockey team online. Is it because I have an intrinsic love of hockey? Or basketball for that matter? No, not at all. I watch because I went to Alabama, I owe much of my success to The University, and I want to watch whether it succeeds or fails. I feel like I owe that. My question is: why don’t you?
Look, being a Bama football fan is easy, especially now. Hell, it’s almost a lazy man’s game. You can sweat two games a year, but it’s almost guaranteed that your team will be better than 99% of college football teams. Baseball? Basketball? It’s not easy, but I’m invested in my university’s success, just as I’m proud that its public relations program is the nation’s best.
Softball and gymnastics have strong attendance, but that’s because they win. If they didn’t, their arenas would be ghost towns much like Sewell-Thomas Stadium is on a perfect Tuscaloosa Saturday afternoon. What once just made me sad now makes me angry. Perhaps it dates me, but I remember a time when baseball and basketball were sell outs most of the time. The product was a little better then, but not by a lot. While UA is not a national title contender in either sport, neither are they an embarrassment. To compare, Mississippi State hasn’t been a title contender in baseball for awhile until this year, and Tennessee hasn’t set the world on fire in basketball. Neither of those programs have been noticeably superior to Alabama’s. Yet, there they are, at the top of attendance lists. Who isn’t? The University of Alabama.
So, returning to our multiple choice quiz earlier, it seems that most of the Alabama fan base should have selected either a or b. The numbers certainly do not seem to indicate c. Pretty sad.
