This is very impressive and as an alumni this pleases me as much as any championship. In fact, I believe this makes our recent run of athletics success even more impressive. Our beloved Tide is winning and is winning with the right kind of people. Does the APR have flaws as a method of measuring academic success? Yes. But it is the measure currently recognized and does provide some basis for comparing institutions and their athletic programs.
Just my thought but this is solid vindication of the strategy put in place by former President and now Chancellor Robert Witt. Use athletics as the promotional vehicle for the University, put the right people in the right places and thereby grow the University, increase the academic reputation and let success breed success. He may be the most impactful President the University has had. Certainly he needs to be considered in the class with Dr. George Denny and Dr. Frank Rose. A matter of time before the board does right and puts some significant structure on campus with Dr. Witt’s name etched in stone.
Further credit is due to our late Athletics Director and his hiring of coaches who work extremely hard to build successful programs. Part of that measure of program success is the accomplishments of the athletes in the classroom. Would we all celebrate just as hard if the football team won NCs with a terrible APR; most likely. But this just makes the recent run of athletics success even more impressive to me.
The headline and points made in this press release are my new talking points to the B1Gs of the world.
